Jan 22, Thalaimannar: Sri Lanka Navy arrested two people attempting to enter the island illegally under cover from the northwestern coast yesterday, the Navy reported today.
The two ethnic Tamils have been dropped off by a hired Indian boat at the 9th Sand Bank off the coast of Thalaimannar and were swimming to the 8th Sand Bank when the naval personnel attached to the North-western Naval Command spotted them and arrested.
Preliminary investigations reveal that one of the pair is a 26-year-old resident in Muttur who has undergone LTTE Sea Tiger training in 2005 and fled to India in 2006.
The other, a 44-year-old man from Mannar was a fisherman who has fled to India in 2007.
Both were handed over to Thalaimannar Police for further investigations, the Navy said.
