Sri Lanka in N-talks with Pakistan after India's UN vote snub

In an apparent tit for tat, Sri Lanka is moving in the direction of a nuclear pact with Pakistan after India voted against it at the UN this year.

At the same time, it is dragging its feet on a similar pact with India by not scheduling talks despite Delhi's keenness to conclude the agreement soon.

India had offered Sri Lanka a comprehensive nuclear pact that would deal with all aspects of civil nuclear cooperation, including safety and training of professionals. One round of talks was held in October last year, and India also sent the southern country a draft pact.

But since then, Delhi has been waiting for a Lankan response on dates for further talks. Official sources said, "We are yet to hear from them," despite offering a "comprehensive pact".

Meanwhile, sources said foreign secretary-level talks between Sri Lanka and Pakistan have identified civil nuclear technology as a major area of cooperation.

Statements made by Lankan authorities show their intent to negotiate nuclear deals with both India and Pakistan, sources said.

Sri Lanka's overtures to Pakistan are of concern to India, which sees its western neighbour as a country "with dubious non-proliferation records". It also has issues with Colombo overlooking its intention to give it the best possible deal. The second vote against Sri Lanka on the Tamil issue at the UN human rights council in March this year upset the country.

Of the 25 countries that voted against Sri Lanka, only India and South Korea were from Asia. Thirteen members, including Pakistan and China, voted against the resolution and eight abstained. India had voted against Sri Lanka in 2012 as well.

Well with pakistan how can deal be only civilian . I think Sl is on course to have militrary nuclear technonlogy

I think they fear that secound round of terrorist activity would be started by India if 13 amendments of their constitution is not implemented

And they have seen how Nuclear weapon have saved North korea and pakistan so nuclear weapon for SL too

I was first to predict on this very forum; Cuban missile crisis like situation.

India's UN vote against SL has threatened them to go nuclear is another bullshit excuse by SL. Every SL con they started it by first back stabbing us in 1962 and 1971 will be justified by a tag/excuse that we are doing because of something or anything done by India.

SL is not part of the Indian cultural group of people even though some of them look similar at a distance and they might have some buddhist architecture etc - they are not one of us as Nepal and Bhutan are ....so no great love lost in this case

My problem is not how we will fix hostile SL, heck we can fix Pakistan, a malignant nuclear enemy any given day, my problem is how our foreign policy under Sonia Gandhi has misread that SL will be a friendly state after helping them out of civil war.

Sri Lanka is nothing but a failure ground for India... We destroyed a community that would have either allied us or joined Indian Union in our century long failures in SL...

this Lanka pakistan love is nothing new and the Lankans effectively played us into fools...

A recent Example: They knew it very much that their Army officers will not have pleasant stay in Wellington, TN... But they sent them to India to get trained. As expected Tamils were angry on seeing Lankan Officers Getting trained in India. The officers left Wellington.. This was followed by a Statement from Pakistan Army, that they are committed to train SL Army in whatever way they can...And You know what wave that statement will create in Lankan society...

they killed the Tamils with India's support and now they are plotting to kill Muslims with Pakistans Support...

They are killing Indian Fishermen in and around Kachha Theevu... Our coast guard with all its sophisticated platforms is absent from the scene... Our govt is very lethargic in voicing a tough ante to SL navies barbaric acts... How are we going to project power in the Hostile waters of South China Sea when we are not able to save the lives and Livelihood of our citizens in our own waters???

We need to give a strong ultimatum to SL, If they continue to double play us, they will make India their Enemy... No pakistan and No china can come to support SL if we enforce a Blockade.. but the problem is we are reluctant or clueless on what we are going to react with this tiny troublemakers...
