SL to purchase new fighter-jets? '

Despite foreign media reports that claim Sri Lanka will be the first foreign buyer of the multi-role combat aircraft JF-17 Thunder, Sri Lanka Air Force says no decision has been made yet with regard to the procurement of the fighter jet.

Air Force Spokesperson, Wing Commander Gihan Senevirathne speaking to Daily Mirror said although both Pakistan and China have indicated the availability of the fighter jet and proposals have been submitted on the availability of the aircrafts, SLA has not made any decision on purchasing them.

Taiwan based China Times group news website ‘Want China Times’ however reports Sri Lanka would be the first foreign country to acquire the aircraft also known as the ‘Fierce Dragon’ or FC1-Xiaolong. This was following a claim made at the 51st Paris Airshow by PAF Sales and Marketing Chairman, Air Commodore Khalid Mahmood that ‘a contract has been signed with an Asian country’, which was reported in Pakistan-based new website 92NewsHD last week.

'Want China Times' further notes that an order has been made for about 18 – 24 aircrafts and adds the speculations of Sri Lanka procuring the fighter jet emerged, when a photo of an office of a SLA Commander allegedly revealed a scale model of the JF-17 Thunder. It also quotes Pakistan Air Force stating the delivery of the aircraft to Sri Lanka would commence in 2017.

Yes it seems that SLAF has not yet confirmed the deal. But it is highly likely that it will take place.

SL could save a lot of money by just operating drones like reapers combined with good SAM systems and radars.

Why would SL invest so much in airforce when there's no hostile neighbors.

Multi role fighters like JF 17 might come in handy in situations like unauthorized dhal droppings and local terrorist insurgencies.

Drones can fit that role very well at a cheaper cost. Better yet could have also take attack choppers, planes like JF17 are only cheap on paper, sorties and training cost a lot.

I think its an excellent news that SLAF is buying JF-17. Getting intel on the plane will get much easier in Sri Lanka than in Pak or China. Bangladesh should order some too.

.

I think the Textron Scorpion is the best Aircraft for countries like Sri Lanka,
First i though too, but it cost around $20million. Bit expensive if you ask me for a light attack aircraft.

First of all Supersonic jets gives an aura of invincibility which drones cannot replicate.

Second Drones ain't as fast as fighter jets which would respond immediately for a threat.

Third drones are vulnerable to electronic attack.

The list may go on......

Only if US is willing to supply them. Besides SL should not buy from any western nation due to the fact that embargoes might be imposed.

If srilanks wants to buy then why donot go for better PLane which china itself uses

I mean you must be knowing that Chinese airforce doesnt uses or intend to use JF-17 for its own purpose

So why donot shrilanks goes for one used BY chinese air force itself

Probably it may be because to show the solidarity with Pakistan. I dunno. Anyway JF 17 might have chosen because it is the best match for our requirements.

Wow! Remember the LTTE had acquired some anti aircraft missiles. IF SLAF acquires JF-17, some one will certainly give LTTE the SAM.. They may buy it from Pakistan / China.

Escalation has a cost dear ... and associated dangers.

Perhaps embarrassments of operation Poonamalie is stiil lurking SLAF mind. That can still be undertaken with the help of fighter escorts.
