Microsoft's Internet Explorer losing Indian market share: study news
26 March 2010

The use of Microsoft's Internet Explorer internet browser is on a steady decline in India, according to a study by the Irish metrics firm StatCounter.

The IE, as it is widely called, has lost almost 20 per cent market of its Indian market share over the past two years, even as Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox grab bigger chunks of the market.

IE's decline in Europe was even more pronounced as it lost three times more share this month than usual in some European countries since the company was forced to mandate a ballot screen by EU in its Windows 7 operating system. The ballot screen offers users a choice between Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome, Apple's Safari, Opera and others, by displaying icons of rival browsers.

The percentage of PCs running IE in India has fallen from around 70 per cent in 2008 to about 51 per cent according to the report. The fall came even in the absence of any regulatory measures like those mandated by European Union on Microsoft, this year.

Worldwide IE has started slipping in market share with rivals Chrome and Firefox making impressive gains from this month, after the EU regulation. Worldwide IE enjoys a global market share of about 55 per cent followed by Firefox at 31 per cent, Chrome at 7 per cent and Safari at about 4 per cent currently.

In developed markets like Germany, Firefox has already displaced IE from its leadership while in France IE has lost close to 6 per cent to Firefox and Google's Chrome since January this year.

Chrome and Opera are, natuarlly, quite happy with development.

Apart from whatever features browsers may have to offer an important consideration is security and browser security was the subject of a conference Pwn2Own recently. The Pwn2Own security conference is a competitive gathering of security experts who try to successfully compromise computer systems.

Two of the most popular web browsers were compromised on day one of the conference. Microsoft's IE and Mozilla's Firefox web browser were compromised on opening day, which indicated security vulnerabilities exist and had not been patched in the browsers' latest versions. Apple's Safari browser was also exploited.

However, no security researcher even tried to compromise the Google Chrome web browser, which experts say may be due to its sandboxing.

So does that mean Google Chrome is the most secure web browser around? According to experts, it probably is but that is not to say it is completely attack-proof as Chrome is known to have security vulnerabilities.

This is one of the best software available. I use it for making calls to my associates in Japan and UK. The cost of PC to Landline comes to almost Re1 per minute and if you have a good Broadband connection then the clarity is fantastic.

Beware! PDF in mail could be a virus
16 Apr 2010, 0413 hrs IST,Debjoy Sengupta,ET Bureau

KOLKATA: There's a new way of stealing data from your PC. Hackers are using Adobe Acrobat file format — commonly called PDF files — to siphon off sensitive data from your PC to China.

Adobe files are considered very safe for viewing documents. So safe, that even credit card companies send their bills in this format and almost all banks use them to send online documents, statements and bills. It is this faith on Adobe files that hackers are trying to cash in on.

According to Websense Security Labs, a Zbot Trojan virus is spreading rapidly through emails and the security firm has already discovered about 2,200 such mails in India. Zbot (also known as Zeus) is an information stealing virus that remains hidden in a PC (Trojan) collecting confidential data from each infected computer.

The modus operandi for the virus is to trick users into opening a mail with a PDF file attached to it. Once a user clicks on the file, the PC gets infected and there is an outflow of sensitive information to the programmer of this virus somewhere in China.

"Do not open any mail with a PDF file attachment that has a file name, Royal_Mail_Delivery_Notice.pdf. When recipients open the PDF, it asks to save the file. The user falsely assumes that the file is just a PDF, and, therefore, safe to store on the local computer. The file, however, is really a virus. The malicious PDF launches the dropped file, taking control of the computer. It was discovered that the latest anti-viruses have an 80% chance of mistaking the file as a harmless one," said a Websense spokesperson.

"It does a whole lot of things to the PC. The virus copies itself in the systems part of Windows Operating system — the area where all the vital windows programmes are stored and changes the registry of the computer in a way that the virus will get activated every time one switches on the PC.

Registry is a database located on a computer that keeps track of everything, such as hardware, software, and user information. For example, when new software is installed in a computer, the registry would contain all the information about this software," the spokesperson added.

India second top spam generating country in world: Study
29 Apr 2010, 1815 hrs IST,PTI

WASHINGTON: India has been ranked second in the list of "dirty dozen" spam relaying countries, accounting for over seven per cent of global junk mails sent during the first quarter of the year, according to a new study.

The country is lagging behind the US, which continues to remain as the king of spam, relaying more than 13 per cent of world's total junk mails, while China has successfully pulled itself out of the list, the study by computer security firm Sophos said today.

With 6.8 per cent of global junk mails, Brazil placed third in the list, while South Korea ranked fourth by generating 4.8 per cent of junk messages sent around the world every day.

Vietnam was fifth with 3.4 per cent, followed by Germany (3.2 per cent), Britain (3.1 per cent), Russia (3.1 per cent), Italy (3.1 per cent), France (3.0 per cent), Romania (2.5 per cent) and Poland (2.4 per cent).

Surprisingly, China, often blamed for cybercrime by other countries, has come in at 15th place with responsibility for relaying just 1.9 per cent of the world's spam, according to the study.

"All eyes aren't so much on which countries are on the list, but the one which isn't," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

"China has earned itself a bad reputation in many country's eyes for being the launch pad of targeted attacks against foreign companies and government networks, but at least in the last 12 months they can demonstrate that the proportion of spam relayed by their computers has steadily reduced.

"A new dirty 'gang of four' -- South Korea, Brazil, India and their ringleader USA -- account for over 30 per cent of all the spam relayed by hacked computers around the globe."

The study, however, showed that despite China's improved ranking, Asia accounted for 33.7 per cent of junk mails sent between January and March of this year.

Continent wise, this figure is larger than Europe's 31.2 per cent, North America's 16.9 per cent and 14.7 percent for Latin America, said Sophos, a Boston-based IT firm that provides security and data protection solutions.

Junk mails, which virtually come from malware-infected computers and cause a huge strain on company resources and leads to lost productivity, accounts for 97 per cent of all messages received by business email servers, many of them selling counterfeit or illicit goods, the company said.

Microsoft launches new productivity suite

Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman and Corporate VP, Microsoft Corporation India with D. Shivakumar, Managing Director, Nokia India (L) at the launch of Microsoft Office 2010 system in India in New Delhi on Thursday.

Microsoft Corporation India Private Ltd announced the launch of its Office 2010, Share Point 2010, Vision 2010 and Project 2010 productivity software for business customers in India and across the world.

More than 90 million existing business customers worldwide can start taking advantage of the latest office productivity suite from Microsoft, which delivers an unified productivity experience across PCs, the web and mobiles, a Microsoft statement said.

As per independent technology research company Forrester Research, companies deploying Office 2010, Share Point 2010, Exchange 2010 and Office Communications Server 2007, can expect more than a 300 per cent return on their investment in less than a year. They will also see more than $13 million in savings over a three-year period and an average savings of more than two work weeks per year.

"The excitement in Indian for Office 2010 is very high," said Microsoft India Chairman Ravi Venkatesan. The beta version saw over 1.3 million downloads and over 2,000 businesses are already making the transition to the latest version, including TCS, Cognizant Technologies, Lowe Lintas, Virgin Mobile, Mindtree Consulting, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Infosystems.

Microsoft also announced that Office Mobile 2010 will soon be available on Windows 6.5 phones and a broad range of Nokia smart phones, starting with Nokia's business-optimised range, the E-series.

MS Office 2010 takes fight with Google to the cloud
Leslie D'Monte / Mumbai May 17, 2010, 1:13 IST

The beta version has seen over 1.3 mn downloads; over 2,000 firms in India are moving to the latest version.

Last September, research firm IDC had cautioned that while Microsoft Office still held the lion's share of the market for office productivity suites, Google was rapidly gaining ground. The survey indicated that 19.5 per cent of the respondents were in organisations that used Google Docs in some form, up from 5.8 per cent a year earlier.

Google Docs, unlike an offline suite, offers its services on the cloud — a metaphor for internet. The market opportunity is huge. IBM, for instance, pegs the global market for cloud computing services to be worth $126 billion by 2012. The global market was $48 million in 2008, according to the information technology major.

Microsoft sought to plug this hole in the cloud by unveiling its Office 2010 a couple of days back. The suite includes "Web Apps", which allow business users to store documents centrally and access them anytime, from anywhere, similar to online office suites like Google Docs and Zoho. It is in beta for individual users till mid-June. The professional version of the software would be available at Rs 20,000 and the consumer and SMB versions at Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.

"The response to Office 2010 suite (which includes Web Apps) in India has been excellent," said Rajan Anandan, managing director, Microsoft India. He adds that Web Apps can easily match the online offerings of competing players, primarily online search giant Google.

The beta version has seen over 1.3 million downloads and over 2,000 companies, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Lowe Lintas, Virgin Mobile, Mindtree Consulting and Infosys Technologies are moving to the latest version.

Office 2010 will help people collaborate online and offline with ease, said Anandan. He, for instance, no longer uses a phone in his office. "Hardly anyone at Microsoft uses a phone anymore," he quipped. Instead, Anandan uses his company's Unified Communication (UC) collaboration tools to take calls (with voice over internet protocol or VoIP), structure messages, set up and attend web conferences, and exchange notes.

The power of these collaboration tools is being extended to the cloud, too, with Office Web Apps, according to Anandan. "Imagine the cost savings from UC tools for companies," he said, adding, "Now think of Office 2010 and Web Apps that can increase that savings manifold for enterprises and small businesses by taking the offerings to the cloud, thereby reducing costs and increasing productivity."

The new edition of Office 2010 has new features that enable users to embed videos in PowerPoint presentations, have voice-to-text conversion for voice mails on Outlook or see trends for a select set of information (and not the entire document), said Anandan.

The new suite also allows co-authoring of documents simultaneously on multiple workstations. Different people can connect simultaneously to view documents and make changes in real-time.

"Over the last 12 months, our strategy has been to sharpen focus on cloud services. Office 2010 was a logical conclusion," said Anandan. Microsoft, he added, offers cloud services across three layers in India. The first is "Software as a service", or SaaS, which includes Microsoft Online Services with over 600 commercial customers in India and over 10,000 seats. Its partners include HCL Technologies, Infosys Technologies and Wipro Infotech. They provide the value-added services. Microsoft's hosted ERP partners include RoboSoft and Net4India.

The software giant also has a cloud offering named PaaS, or "Platform as a service". This revolves around its recently-launched Windows Azure Services platform in India. HCL Technologies uses Microsoft's management application developed on Windows Azure to help customers manage data. Likewise, Sportz Line has migrated an industry-leading sports analytics application to provide real-time data to teams. Two cricket teams in Indian Premier League are its customers.

"Infrastructure as a service", or IaaS, is the third cloud-computing offering from Microsoft, according to Anandan. It has a partnership with Reliance Communications (RCom) for cloud computing services, wherein it provides enterprises and SMBs in India access to a variety of enterprise-scale IT solutions, applications and services on the pay-as-you-go model. These include server hosting, data storage and archival. Microsoft's virtualisation (a technology which helps companies reduce the number of servers and, hence, hardware costs) and management technologies have helped RCom reduce input costs involved in providing these services.

The concept of collaborating in real-time on the cloud, or internet, is not new. Online developers like Zoho, Upstartle, 2Web Technologies and 37Signals use internet to allow collaboration. For instance, if a file is hosted on the web, rather than a local server or a desktop, one can allow several users to read and write from it at once.

Online giant Google took the concept a step further with its free Docs office suite (it rolled out an updated Docs service last month which features enhanced collaboration tools) that offers support for real-time collaboration.

Office 2010, too, enables real-time collaboration, either from the Office desktop applications or the all-new Office 2010 Web Apps. In addition to the Outlook updates, there are new PowerPoint tools for internet-based presentations and handling videos. The new "Broadcast Slide Show" tool is expected to be the most-used new feature of PowerPoint. Windows Live also will run Web-based versions of the Office software, as part of the company's SkyDive service.

However, Microsoft, according to Anandan, does not see these cloud offerings replacing personal computer (PC) software. "We see them as complementary offerings," he said. The online versions will be geared toward tasks best done online, such as collaborative editing. The PC software will be where people will continue to go to create documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint decks.

Globally, over 8.6 million people use Office 2010 and related products. Office Mobile 2010 will soon be available on Windows 6.5 mobile handsets and on a broad range of Nokia smartphones starting with Nokia's business-optimised range, E-series.

Meanwhile, Google, which created cloud-based rivals to Word and Excel, is cajoling business users to switch to those instead of upgrading to Office 2010. Microsoft, which has nearly 95 per cent of the market for office software, however, is not taking things lying down.
