Islamist group prays for earthquake in Sochi during Winter Olympics
Reuters | Feb 11, 2014, 09.23 PM IST

SOCHI, RUSSIA: A militant Islamist group has urged followers to pray for an earthquake in Sochi during the Winter Olympics to avenge Muslims who died there fighting "Russian infidels".

The appeal was made by a local branch of the Caucasus Emirate, a group which is waging an insurgency for an Islamist state in Russia's North Caucasus and called on supporters last year to attack the Games.

"All who are able to read this letter can supplicate that the Almighty destroys the land in Sochi with an earthquake, and makes the infidels 'drunk of water' before Hell and drown in a flood!," said the appeal posted online on Monday.

"The Games of the atheists and pagans! The pigs are so arrogant that they decided to host the Games on the ground where our ancestors shed their blood to defend Islam and Muslims. Even the blind can see it!"

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who waged a war in Chechnya to try to rein in separatists in the North Caucasus, has staked his personal and political prestige on the Games.

But some of the events are being held in territory that was the homeland of ethnic Circassians until they were expelled in the 19th century.

Islamist leaders say this amounts to performing "Satanic dances" on the graves of Muslims killed fighting Russian forces and one, Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov, urged followers last year to prevent the Games going ahead.

"We know how the Russian infidels - those who we have been fighting for centuries in the Caucasus - have become arrogant and decided to hold the Satanic Games on the ground of the companions who brought Islam," said the new appeal, issued by the Ingushetia media branch of the Caucasus Emirate.

"May Allah give the infidels in Sochi the last earthquake of their lives," it said.

Ingushetia lies about 650 km (400 miles) by road from Sochi across the Caucasus mountains.

MILITANT ATTACKS

Russia says the Games are as safe from militant attacks as anywhere in the West and Russian security services are working with colleagues from Europe and North America.

The insurgency in the North Caucasus, which stretches from Dagestan on the Caspian Sea to near Sochi's coast on the Black Sea, is rooted in the wars between Russian forces and Chechen separatists in 1994-96 and 1999-2000.

The Caucasus Emirate said separately in a video posted online that it was responsible for the deaths of six people last month in the Stavropol region, a gateway to the North Caucasus, although it said the killings were not related to the Games.

The discovery of the six corpses in cars last month prompted Russia to put security forces on combat alert in the region, about 300 km from Sochi.

A man identified in the video as Emir Tengiz, a Caucasus Emirate leader, accused Russian forces of frequently covering up the murder of peaceful Muslims by saying they were militants and threatened more attacks to drive out ethnic Russians.

"We declare to these infidels that if they do not ... stop killing peaceful Muslims, we will cause such an exodus of the Russian-speaking population that no actions, no investment and no job creation can stop," he said. "We have warned you."

ITAR-TASS: Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics - Indian luger pleasantly shocked by reaction to national flag return to Olympics

SOCHI, February 12. /ITAR-TASS/. Indian athletes have not expected such a stormy welcome from other athletes, media and fans to the International Olympic Committee's decision to lift the suspension of India's Olympic Committee allowing Indian athletes to compete under their national flag, Indian luger Shiva Keshavan told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

"This is unbelievable news," said the athlete who finished 37th in the singles luge at the Sochi Olympic Games. "We had been waiting for that very long, 18 months, and it is a great piece of luck to see this happen in the long run. Now two of my friends will be able to compete in Sochi under their national flag," the luger said.

After the Indian Olympic Committee had been disqualified, Keshavan competed under the Olympic flag in Sochi. However, other Indian athletes - Alpine skier Himanshu Thakur and skier Nadeem Iqbal, have not performed as of yet. Keshavan said their accreditations had been re-issued. "Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow the Indian flag will be hoisted in the Olympic village, which is very pleasant. I have spoken to Hismanshu and Nadeem, they are very happy and look forward to their starts," he added.

The luger said however that he was a bit upset, as if the IOC had made its decision to lift the suspension two days earlier, he could have competed as a full-fledged representative of India. "Of course, it is a bit sad that the decision had not been taken earlier," he regretted, expressing confidence that a new administration of the Indian Olympic Committee would do all to avoid its disqualification in the future.

The 33-year-old athlete said he had been pleasantly shocked by such a stormy reaction by the media and fans. "Everybody was congratulating us. Complete strangers were coming over, patting us on the shoulders and saying good words. This is much unexpected and very pleasant," he told Itar-Tass.

The luger sounded a bit upset that he would not be able to take part in the Olympics closing ceremony. He said he had already booked a plane ticket for February 17, as he had not known India would have its national flag back. He said he would never forget Russia and Sochi where magnificent Olympic Games were taking place. "Everything here is excellent without exaggeration, from the beginning to the end," he said.

Canadian hailed for helping Russian skier finish at Sochi Olympics - Hindustan Times

A Canadian coach was applauded on Wednesday for showing the true spirit of the Olympics when he helped a Russian cross country skier to finish after breaking a ski in a crash.

Russia's Anton Gafarov was competing in the semi-finals of the men's sprint on Tuesday when he fell on a high speed hairpin bend that caused problems throughout the competition.

His left ski badly damaged, Gafarov still tried to limp to the finish but then the ski disintegrated entirely.

With Gafarov facing the prospect of skiing on one leg to the end, a Canadian coach rushed to his aid and gave him a ski which Gafarov used to ski to the finish several minutes behind the leaders.

"It is entirely to be applauded, and that's one of the things why we all love the Olympics," said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams.

"As well as being an amazing elite sport, there is something special as well, there are values underlying it as well," he added.

Sochi 2014 spokeswoman Alexandra Kosterina added: "It is just the essence of the Olympic Games, the Olympic spirit, in its core. So I think that is great."

The coach was named as Canadian cross country ski coach Justin Wadsworth.

"It was like watching an animal stuck in a trap. You can't just sit there and do nothing about it," Wadsworth was quoted as saying by the Toronto Star.

Quite why no Russian coach was on hand to help the unfortunate Gafarov – and that it needed a foreigner to come to his rescue – remains a mystery.

"I just had one aim – to get to the end," Gafarov told Russian sports website sportsdaily.ru. "Some foreigner then gave me skis from a different firm."

Gafarov finished the race to huge cheers from Russian supporters but visibly upset after missing out on his chance for a place in the final.

He blasted the track as "unfit for the Olympics", saying he had fallen as his ski had ploughed into a clump of snow that had not been removed.
