SLEEPING pills taken by millions of Britons may increase the risk of an early death, experts warn.
They include drugs commonly used in the UK, including tema-zepam and zopiclone.
Latest research shows that the higher the dose, the greater the risk of dying.
People on higher doses also have an increased risk of cancer, but even those on the lowest doses – between four to 18 pills a year – have a 3.6 times higher risk of dying compared to non-users.
Experts say the benefits of taking the tablets, known as hypnotics, do not justify the risks.
Their research, published in the British Medical Journal, is worrying because about a third of people in the country are thought to suffer from insomnia brought on by stress, and this leads them to take some form of medication.
