Exactly. Some extremists like to portray their community as superior to other Indians.
If it hadn't been for Nadir Shah's invasion and destruction of Mughals in Punjab, Sikhs would have remained bit players paying tribute to the later Mughals.
They also owe a lot to the British. There would have been no liberation of northwest, if the British hadn't forced Ranjit to sign the Treaty of Amritsar in 1809.
Whatever the propitious circumstance Sikhs from being a persecuted community, became one of the most powerful community of NW India.
Minor correction. Raja Gulab Singh was ruler of Jammu+Ladakh+Baltistan at that time.
He was a feudatory of the Lahore Durbar at the time.
You can confirm that by reading history. And also esp by reading about the events in the winter of 1844 and spring of 1845.
=====
It's curious that Ranjit Singh adopted Persian as the official language of his kingdom and shunned his native language Punjabi. Ranjit Singh was trying to be another Mughal. He was not pro sikh or pro hindu. His kingdom was culturally a continuation of Mughal empire. Sikhs did not try to assert their culture over others. They persianized themselves as others before them had done.
Most of the orthodox Sikhs clergy call him a "Brahminzed" Ruler.
He had two wives, did opium, built mandirs, wore tilak etc.

If only reinforcements would've arrived or the letter from Maharaja Sher Singh would've reached him, he would've conquered much more land.
