Stockholm (AFP) - The Swedish armed forces stepped up a military operation off the coast of Stockholm on Saturday where they were investigating a report of "foreign underwater activity".

More than 200 men, Swedish stealth ships, minesweepers and helicopters have been searching an area of the Baltic Sea about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the Swedish capital since Friday evening, following a tip-off from what the military called a "credible source".

"I have decided to increase the number of units in the area -- units with specialised sensors," Commander Jonas Wikstroem told reporters at a press conference in Stockholm.

"We still judge that the information we received yesterday was very trustworthy," he added, but declined to comment on what the military had discovered after more than 24 hours sweeping the sea around islands in Stockholm's archipelago.

There is the claim that Russia has infiltrated the waters.

One wonders why.

Possibly as a practice to try out some plans wherein the access to the North Sea becomes more undetectable?

Most likely there is no Russian sub.

However the event shows the paranoia developing in Europe.

So these guys concluded from this Super HQ pic that this is a Russian Sub.

---------------

Also how does this work ?
They say they got a tip-off from a credible source, now won't the source be exposed ?
Something fishy ? (no pun)

In the end they'll simply say something like "There was some mysterious sub, which has now left the area". Already a lot of media has labelled it Russian Sub. This of course will make the common Swede paranoid about the Russian and thus the desired effect is achieved. :yey:

Quite possibly there was no sub. But, it's not paranoia when something is actually happening and Russian violations of countries borders has been increasing, for obvious reasons.

The Swedish navy left port. It's an ongoing military operation, the media wont be told the details (google up OPSEC).

Another user mentioning paranoia

Unlike many other nations, Sweden takes its border security very seriously. The Swedish Navy repeated attacked i.e.tried to destroy, Soviet submarines, particularly in the 1980's.

I really hope this wasn't a Russian submarine and if it was I feel most sorry for the poor Russian submariners, risking their lives so some morons can feel more of a man.

"There is no submarine hunt underway, there is an ongoing intelligence gathering operation," Loefven said in Helsinki.

- 'Many indications' it's Russian -

The search, which entered its fourth day on Monday, has triggered widespread speculation in the Swedish and foreign media that the vessel might be Russian.

Russia instead pointed the finger at the Netherlands, saying that the mystery submarine may be Dutch.

That claim was met with a swift denial from the Hague which said its submarine was "not involved", having left the area after taking part in a naval exercise with Sweden.

Tomas Ries, an expert at the Swedish National Defence College, said he had little doubt that the vessel was of Russian origin.

In just over a month, an Estonian intelligence officer has been reported abducted by Russian forces, Finland has complained of Russian interference with one of its research vessels, and Sweden has lodged an official protest over a "serious violation" when Russian warplanes entered its air space.

With shades of Frederick Forsyth, the maritime mystery has fired the imagination of the region. Moscow has denied it has any submarine in mechanical trouble in Sweden's waters, but nervous governments fear that the Baltic Sea could become the next flashpoint with Russia after Ukraine.

"This may become a game-changer for the security in the whole Baltic Sea region," tweeted Edgars Rinkevics, foreign minister of Latvia, where officials say there has been a marked increase in Russian submarines and ships navigating close to their territorial waters.

Reported by RT: http://rt.com/news/197412-sweden-sub-dutch-russia/

The country's Walrus-class diesel-electric submarine Bruinvis was in the Baltic Sea last week, not far from Stockholm.

Photos of the emergency surfacing procedure by this submarine were leaked to Swedish media and reported as an emergency surfacing by a Russian submarine, the source said.

"Bruinvis has been docked in the Estonian capital Tallinn since Friday last week and is about to sail back. Hopefully, this report will help the Swedish Navy locate it as it travels back to one of the Dutch naval bases," the source said.

The Dutch Navy said on Monday the Bruinvis wasn't near Stockholm at the time the mysterious submarine was spotted. The joint drills with Sweden, in which the submarine took part, ended on Tuesday, after which it set off for Tallinn, said a spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Defense, Marnoes Visser.
But Swedish Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad told reporters that the search was prompted by a photo sent to the Defense Ministry by a man, who witnessed it surface and dive again. He said the Navy didn't single out Russia as the foreign nation behind the submarine activity.

"From the information we have, we cannot draw the same conclusion as the media that there is a damaged U-boat. We have no information about an emergency signal or the use of an emergency channel," he said.

Could be a Russian submarine testing their (un)detectable-ness. Could be the Dutch submarine. Or, could be a total hoax, just to get the people of Sweden nervous, rake up the fictitious Russian threat, and coax them to join NATO. Of course, the best way to get an entire nation angry is to shoot down a passenger jet and blame it on Russia.

I will wait for evidence about this Loch-Ness Monster. Excuses like "we have evidence but it is classified" ain't gonna work.

Maskirovka... is amazing how people from non media- savvy countries can be fooled so easily.

But, in this case blaming the Dutch (MH17)... 0% shame, 100% asking for kicking. If the Dutch and Malaysia agree to invade Russia tomorrow, I'll (an Australian) sign up straight away.

First it is NOT cold war. Tensions aside, Russia IS NOT about to invade Sweden.

There may be a sub or it may be a hoax. The picture taken by some non-military person can easily be a hoax. The point here is that the military takes actions not based on its own intelligence but based on someone sending a picture.

They will make more stories after this incident to hide their ineptness.

Russia is NOT LIKELY to confront Sweden through a sub in the Baltic sea. It makes no sense whatsoever.

From CNN:

The search began Thursday after Swedish intelligence picked up an emergency radio call in Russian, reported The Local, citing the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

The radio transmissions were being sent to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, 330 miles (530 kilometers) south of Stockholm on the Baltic's southern shore, according to The Local report.
So there is no confirmed sighting, only radio intercepts. RDF could locate origin of transmissions from nominal Russian sub, but not were they directed unless a another station was heard. So as of now all conjecture is based on signals intelligence. As far as I have read, there are no sonar signatures detected for what is claimed.

Sweden's military has announced that if it finds a suspect foreign vessel in the Stockholm archipelago, it is prepared to force it to the surface "with weapons if necessary".

Battleships, minesweepers, helicopters and more than 200 troops are scouring an area about 30 to 60 kilometres from the Swedish capital after a "man-made" and foreign object was spotted in the waters.

"The most important value of the operation - regardless of whether we find something -- is to send a very clear signal that Sweden and its armed forces are acting and are ready to act when we think this kind of activity is violating our borders," Supreme Commander General Sverker Göranson said.

"Today, I can also report that there have been two further observations which were made by members of the public that are interesting enough to require further follow-up work," Admiral Anders Grenstad told reporters.

He would not give further details about what kind of new sightings had been made, but said they were being assessed and were not yet considered as credible as the three made earlier.

Grenstad said the operation was aimed at gathering intelligence, not military action, and could continue for some time.

"I want to stress again that this is not a U-boat hunting operation which has the aim of bringing down an opponent with military might," he said.

Nothing will come out of this search.

First, assuming it is a Russian sub, it can operate underwater and move quite a long distance in the 5 days this operation has lasted. So most likely the sub is no longer there is the area of search.

Second the radio signal could be a method to check the capability and readiness of Swedes and their possible response.
