Indian prisoner on death row, Sarabjit Singh, was attacked by five of his fellow prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore on Friday, reported Express News.
According to initial details, the prisoners injured Sarabjit by hitting a brick on his head and hurling other items inside the jail over an argument. Further investigations into the incident are underway.
Sarabjit was shifted to a hospital, where doctors said he was in critical condition.
Express News correspondent Noman Sheikh reported that Sarabjit was being kept in a separate barrack but the incident took place during lunch time.
The prisoners who attacked were identified and sent to separate barracks for interrogation. Initial reports suggested that the five prisoners were also on death row.
The jail authorities have not given out any official statements to the media yet.
Last year in September, Sarabjit wrote a letter to his sister and daughters saying that the authorities at Kot Lakhpat jail were slow-poisoning and mentally torturing him. Sarabjit had accused the jail officials of "conspiring to drive him insane" and ridiculing him when he asked them for painkillers.
According to the prosecution, Sarabjit had illegally crossed into Pakistan from Kasur on August 29, 1990.
He was arrested on charges of conducting four bomb blasts in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore. He is named Manjeet Singh in the FIR. He was sentenced to death.
His counsel claimed it was a case of mistaken identity

Pakistanis are fanatic wolves, the term used by Nathu Ram Godse. Accepting security from these wolves is a joke. No one knows how many times he was forced converted to Islam and no one knows how many times these failed frustrated Pakistanis have tortured him. Just pray his body will come back with all organs in place.

When the incident happened in Pakistan and in Pakistan Jail..How can you in your true sense say that it has nothing to do with Pakistan?
Denial may work in Pakistan. But the whole world is watching.

Sarabjit Singh continues to be critical; Pakistan stops consular access | NDTV.com
Pakistan stops consular access
Updated: April 28, 2013 12:40 IST

Lahore: Islamabad has reportedly stopped consular access to Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national who is on death row in Pakistan. Indian diplomats had rushed to Lahore hours after Sarabjit was brutally attacked by a group of prisoners in a jail on Friday. They will not be allowed to see him now with Islamabad reportedly saying they were given access for one visit only. India is trying for regular access to Sarabjit on ''humanitarian grounds," according to government sources.

Meanwhile, Sarabjit continues to be in deep coma. His family is expected to reach Lahore via the Wagah border shortly. Yesterday, the Pakistan High Commission issued emergency visas to four members of Sarabjit's family. The visas, however, came after a push from New Delhi and strong protests from the Indian establishment, including the Prime Minister, who condemned the attack and called it a "very sad incident".

Are you daft or simply weird in your arguments?

Did you notice, unlike Pakistan, how India protects Pakistani prisoners?

Kasab is a case in point, where there were many Indian prisoners who would willing lynch him for his and Pakistan's dastardly and coward crime and go to the gallows.

So, India ensured no such thing happened!

I think you all are too full with venom and have lost any trace of humanity.

Beheading soldiers, killing helpless prisoners, killing your own because there is a difference in the way Islam is practiced!

You are really bloody chaps rejoicing in being crass, gruesome and inhuman!

He was not saved old boy.

He was just lucky that the blood thirsty Pakistanis were too busy killing each other - Shia, Sunni and the works!

Please note, one more expletive and you shall be shown the door!

I have no time for people who use language associated with guttersnipes!

That would be ideal for Pakistan.

The way he has been battered and the medical reports indicating he has only a whisker of a chance, India will be blamed for poor medical attention should he not make it!

What happened to Nihar Singh's case?
There were eyewitnesses to his murder that took place in the Jail.
One eyewitness (lawyer) even gave his statement in the media.
As usual GoI puts no value to its citizens.
Comparing Raymond Davis and Nihar/Sarabjit brings up a painful contrast.

Political plot behind assault: Pak human rights activist
Sarabjit Singh in deep coma, Pak expedites visas for family - The Times of India
Political plot behind assault: Pak human rights activist

Ansar Burney, Pakistan's human rights activist and one of Sarabjit Singh's counsels, on Saturday saw a conspiracy behind the attack on the Indian death row prisoner.

Burney didn't rule out a "political plot" behind the near fatal attack on Sarabjit as Pakistan goes to polls in two weeks. "There appears to be a deep-rooted conspiracy to attack Sarabjit ahead of polls which should be investigated," he said.

Talking to TOI over phone from Karachi, Burney said, "I see some foul play in it. Pakistan government was not releasing Sarabjit and it couldn't hang him due to international pressure. So an attack on him could serve the purpose to gain support from fundamental elements during polls."

He said since Friday he had been getting threats from various Taliban groups and fundamentalists, who are inimical to peace with India, forcing him to postpone his visit to Lahore to meet the Indian prisoner. "But I have sent Ansar Burney Trust volunteers to provide all help to Sarabjit Singh," he said.

Burney said the Trust had moved a fresh mercy petition before the Pakistan president to commute the death sentence , its 14th petition for Sarabjit.

Another human rights activist and advocate from UK Jas Uppal echoed Burney's views. "Pakistan authorities most likely encouraged the attack on Sarabjit as they knew that it could help them during elections," he told TOI over phone from London. Jas had launched a worldwide 'Save Sarabjit' campaign.

She said it was difficult to understand how the attackers got bricks and sharp objects in prison and that there was no security around or intervention by the prison wardens. Jas said she had been informed by the Red Cross in Pakistan that they had been refused permission to meet him. "If this is indeed the case, then the Pakistani authorities are in breach of international law," she said.

Deepak Kumar, son of Indian prisoner Chamel Singh who was killed in a similar assault by fellow inmates in the same prison on January 15, said, "Who can feel the pain more? I lost my father recently in a similar attack."

Talking to TOI from Jammu, he said, "I think now they hate Indians after the hanging of Ajmal Kasab and wanted to take revenge on hapless Indian prisoners."

He said attack on Sarabjit reminded him of the torture meted out to his father. "My father was also admitted in the same Jinnah Hospital in Lahore after he was brutally assaulted and he died in the same hospital," he said.

Chamel Singh, a resident of Jammu, was arrested in 2010 at Sialkot and was awarded five years' imprisonment for spying. He was brought to Kot Lakhpat jail in June 2012.
