Gun-wielding coastguards use helicopters and ropes to board Arctic Sunrise, which was allegedly in international waters

An Australian man is among 28 crew members being held at gunpoint on a Greenpeace ship in the Arctic after it was stormed by Russian security forces.

Members of the Russian coastguard boarded the Arctic Sunrise in the Pechora Sea via helicopter and ropes on Thursday. Greenpeace says the vessel was in international waters at the time of boarding.
A video released by Greenpeace shows the Russian coastguard contacting the vessel and warning that the direct action against the oil drill platform was a suspected act of terrorism.

"This is the Russian coastguard ship. Your people and your boat attacked oil platform [sic]"¦ I suspect you in terrorism," the radio message says.

The crew includes 11 nationalities, including one female activist who is a permanent resident in Australia and based in Greenpeace's offices in Sydney.

I agree. Greenpeace is an organization funded by vested interest groups to cause mischief with countries with rival business interests. Trying to scale a Russian oil rig is a terrorist act. They are lucky they came out alive from this.
I don't know about the rival business interests, but Greenpeace members are insufferably self-righteous.

I think only one of them happens to be an Australian resident.

That 'polar bear' term made me chuckle. :)

Russian court deciding whether to hold all 8 remaining Greenpeace activists; 22 already jailed | Fox News
A court in the northern Russian city of Murmansk has sent another Greenpeace activist to jail for two months over a protest at a drilling platform in Arctic waters.

Last week, the court ordered 20 activists and two journalists jailed pending an investigation, but put off the hearings for the remaining eight activists until Sunday.

Dmitry Litvinov, who has dual U.S. and Swedish citizenship, was the first to have his case heard.

No charges have been brought against any of the activists. Russian prosecutors are considering whether to charge them with piracy, among other offenses.

The Russian Coast Guard disrupted the activists' attempt to scale the oil platform on Sept. 18. The next day, they seized Greenpeace's ship, the Arctic Sunrise, and towed it with the crew aboard to Murmansk.

Russia drops piracy charges against Greenpeace activists

Russia has dropped piracy charges against 30 Greenpeace activists, replacing them with hooliganism charges, according to officials.

The new charge has a maximum penalty of seven years rather than 15. Greenpeace says it is still "wildly disproportionate".
