Russian Ship With 700 Tons of Gold Ore Goes Missing

A vessel with a nine-person crew and 700 tons of gold ore onboard has gone missing in stormy seas off Russia's Pacific Coast. The ship sent a distress call yesterday as it was sailing from the coastal town of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk. The vessel, hired by mining company Polymetal, was carrying the gold ore from one deposit to another where it was to be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small percentage of the precious metal.

Polymetal's spokesman would not estimate the value of the cargo. The company said it has shipped ore via that route before, and there was nothing unusual in shipping it by the sea.

Russian Ship With 700 Tons of Gold Ore Goes Missing - 9-person crew sent distress call

===============================================================

700 ton [short, US] = 22 400 000 ounce
1 ounce of gold = approx $USD 1,700.00

Typically 5 grams of gold is obtained per 1 Troy ton of gold order

3500 grams of gold which equates to approx. 123 ounces
So about USD$ 210, 000.00 worth of gold was lost, plus the ship, plus the crew.

Over such "little" gold,
.all are opens their mouth of Goldwho cares the crews lives .

Not all of the gold ore will have gold.

A tonne may have 5g to 10g of gold at best.

Divers Find Missing Gold Ship

The ship, registered in Nikovaevsk-na-Amur, sank near the Shantarsky Islands in the southwestern Sea of Okhotsk on October 28 with nine crew members on board. The vessel was en route from the port of Kiran to the port of Okhotsk with a cargo of gold ore weighing 700 tons.

Russian rescue divers located the sunken cargo ship Amurskaya on Wednesday, rescuers from the Yuzhsakhalinsk center told RIA Novosti.

Russia's Transport Ministry confirmed the finding.

"With improving weather conditions, after finding a submerged object on sonar, the rescue ship Rubin moored over the object. The object was confirmed as the Amurskaya," the Transport Ministry said in a statement.

"The divers work is completed. None of the sailors' bodies have been discovered, but a search inside the ship has not taken place," a source told RIA Novosti.

A decision on whether it is safe to search inside the ship will be taken later by rescue authorities in Moscow.

The operation has been hampered by difficult weather conditions in the area, with winds of up to five yards per second (five m/s) and choppy waves.

Mining experts say
the cargo of ore could contain up to 9 pounds (4.2 kg) of gold worth up to $230,000 at current prices.
A criminal case has already been launched on suspicion of violation of ship safety rules.

I assume the primary mission of the Russian Coast Guard is not to save lives at sea. There is nothing said about a response to the distress call from the lost ship, or what survival equipment the crew might have (immersion suits, rafts). The story is only important because of the cargo.
Oh hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
