MOSCOW, November 4 (Marc Bennetts, RIA Novosti) - Thousands of Russian nationalists and ultra-conservative Orthodox activists marched along a central Moscow embankment on Sunday to protest mass immigration and demand tougher internal travel restrictions on people from the country's mainly Muslim North Caucasus.
"Russia for Russians, Moscow for Muscovites," chanted protesters, many with their faces covered by scarves or surgical masks, as a police helicopter hovered above. Police said 25 people were arrested for displaying Nazi symbols as the march started.
"Immigrants show no interest in assimilating into Russian society," said Sergei, a 25-year-old office worker, who declined to give his surname. "If things don't change, we could see massive ethnic clashes," he said, as protesters gathered opposite Gorky Park.
Police said some 6,000 people had attended Sunday's approved march, but organizers put this figure at 10,000.
Unsanctioned nationalist rallies also took place across the country, with dozens of arrests reported in St. Petersburg, the Tatar capital, Kazan, and Yekaterinburg in the Urals.
Racial tensions in Russia have been exacerbated by mass labor immigration from former-Soviet Central Asian republics such as Tajikistan, and by frequent clashes in Moscow and other major cities between ethnic Russians and youths from the North Caucasus.

Nationalists point to high crime rates among illegal immigrants as proof that the Kremlin's migration policies have failed. Moscow investigators said earlier this year that illegal immigrants were responsible for around one-third of reported rapes in the city.
The police have claimed success at breaking up neo-Nazi groups in the Moscow region. But race-hate crime figures remain high: 20 people were killed and at least 130 wounded in racially motivated attacks across Russia last year, according to the Sova Center for research into nationalism and racism.
President Vladimir Putin has described himself as a nationalist, and in January pledged to crack down on "aggressive, provocative and disrespectful" internal migrants who fail to respect "the customs of the Russian people."

But he also warned against promoting the creation of a "mono-ethnic, national Russian state," calling it "the shortest path to both the destruction of the Russian people and Russia's sovereignty." However, an opinion poll carried out in August by the independent, Moscow-based Levada Center indicated that 41 percent of Russians agree to some extent with the nationalist slogan "Russia - only for Russians."

What's wrong with "Russia for Russians"? India is for Indians too.
No damned foreigner comes here, commits crimes and gets away with it. In the long run, every one of them has either received retribution, or been nullified or has been expelled.
That applies for Mughals, English, Pakis in Kashmir, Kasav and soon to be applied for a certain "SG".

If immigrants come and show disdain for Russian culture, ethos and values, there is no solid reason why they should not be subjected to similar disdain.

Why are these people emigrating back to Russia after they wilfully broke away from the soviet union? Sounds daft that the Russians even allow it. In time they will ask for another separate state.

Actually the central Asian states (from which vast majority of immigrants come from) did NOT want to secede from the Soviet Union, Russia made them secede since it did not want to share the country with so many Muslims.

Couldn't get an English version of the above image.

The image shows the referendum that was held regarding the preservation of the USSR.

The exact question asked is :" Do you consider necessary the preservation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as a renewed federation of equal sovereign republics in which the rights and freedom of an individual of any nationality will be fully guaranteed?"

In the pie charts above: blue --> Yes
green --> No
black/gray --> Invalid

Also republics where referendum was not held are painted in black. They include: the Baltic states (3), Moldova, Georgia and Armenia.
Overall pie chart (including for states that did not take part in the referendum) is the pie chart shown in top right.

For more info: Soviet Union referendum

I don't think they willfully broke away.

The flag used by these "Russian nationalists" is interesting. It's the flag of the old Czarist monarchy:

Just like the White power groups in the US are strongly associated with Protestant Christianity. The Russian Nationalists are strongly associated with Orthodox Christianity. And the Romanov Dynasty was a big fan of the Orthodoxy. There are even certain Russian Orthodox groups who advocate for the return of the Czar.

whats up with the nazi symbols and slogans though? White nationalist groups all over the world including the US, UK, and Russia seem to show pride in chanting the ideas of someone virtually directly responsible for millions of deaths of their own citizens. Don't they realise their fathers fought and died against the exact same sentiments?

Kyrgyzstan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Despite these political moves toward independence, economic realities seemed to work against secession from the Soviet Union. In a referendum on the preservation of the Soviet Union in March 1991, 88.7% of the voters approved the proposal to retain the Soviet Union as a "renewed federation". Nevertheless, secessionist forces pushed Kyrgyzstan's independence through in August of that same year.

These so-called ultra nationalists could do their country a big favor by studying, getting jobs and marrying to have a dozen kids.

Kids is something Russia needs most and I am talking about slavic kids.

So much for patriotism.

Spot on. The worst challenge Russia is facing is that of depopulation. I don't get it. What's the big deal with kids? Have wife will make kids. On top of that, state is showering gifts on the newborn. So what's the problem with these young Russian couples, whom I heard marry very early, even while college days.

It has less to do with Birth rate and more to do with death rate. The death rate in Russia is very high. They are dying off quickly.

The main reason for the high death rate is rampant alcoholism, right?

Yeah. Like you got alcohol and the damage it does to the body like alcohol poisoning, liver damage and other diseases associated with it. Add to this the side effects like accidents due to drunk driving, alcohol induced violence etc. Yes, alcohol is the major killer of young Russians.
