The Russian military says an Israeli raid on Syria triggered a chain of events that led to its Il-20 plane being shot down by a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile. Moscow reserves the right to respond accordingly.

On Monday evening, four Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked targets in Syria’s Latakia after approaching from the Mediterranean, a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. The Israeli warplanes approached at a low altitude and “created a dangerous situation for other aircraft and vessels in the region,”it said.

The military said that the French Navy’s frigate ‘Auvergne,’ as well as a Russian Il-20 plane were in the area during the Israeli operation.

“The Israeli pilots used the Russian plane as cover and set it up to be targeted by the Syrian air defense forces. As a consequence, the Il-20, which has radar cross-section much larger than the F-16, was shot down by an S-200 system missile,” the statement said, adding that 15 Russian military service members have died as a result.

The Russian ministry said the Israelis must have known that the Russian plane was present in the area, but this did not stop them from executing “the provocation.”Israel also failed to warn Russia about the planned operation in advance. The warning came just a minute before the attack started, which “did not leave time to move the Russian plane to a safe area,”the statement said.

The statement gives a larger death toll than earlier reports by the Russian military, which said there were 14 crew members on board the missing Il-20. It said a search and rescue operation for the shot-down plane is underway.

A later update said debris from the downed plane was found some 27km off the Latakia coast. The search party collected some body parts, personal possessions of the crew, and fragments of the plane.

Israel did not comment on the reports about the air raid in Syria, which is consistent with its usual policy on such matters. Israeli officials earlier acknowledged hundreds of airstrikes conducted in Syria over the past years. Israel claims its interventions are necessary to fight the Iranian presence in its neighboring country.

Hmmmm.....How did the F-16 use the IL 20 as 'cover'? It would be interesting to know the tactics the Israelis pilots employed.

But how did they fool the IFF in the Syrian Air Defence

If two different planes are flying in the same area ,Russian plane should have been carrying an IFF transponder

This also shows that Russians don't inform the Syrians before a Sortie

Russia blames the FREMM for shooting it down, we deny it. It could be the biggest cover up of the decade.

Another hogwash claim by the Russian military to cover their incompetence. First they claimed their spy plane was sjot down by a French frigate, and now the Israelis used it as cover (admitting finally what the US military first reported, that it was Syrisn SAM that downed the Russian plane).

No offense, but it sure was a shock (friendly fire) to everyone.

IL-20 is an ELINT, it's sortie going into the area near FREMM is kind of asking more questions.

Russians might have thought that FREMM has not identified or comms failed with IL-20, something similar happened with Turkey as well. By the way, Russians didn't confirmed, they actually had doubt. Russians statements we're "We lost IL-20 in so & so area and we're not sure who did it, oh and FREMM is nearby."

It might have been major embarrassment for Russians to declare that it was shot down by Syrians. Frankly, I was pissed when I came to know that Syrians fired Sams against F-16s hiding behind IL-20. I can't imagine how pissed Russians were. I thought downed Su-24 was an embarrassment, but it pales in front of downed IL-20.

Oh boy!!! I thought syrians might have learned something about warfare when they fought all these hard battles to resurrect their country. They still have long way to go.

Actually Russia said they detected the Auvergne launching missiles in the vicinity of the Il-20. Considering the Auvergne is a stealth design it appears they couldn't even detect it and just made up a story to cover up their incompetent AD operators. Either that or we really did shoot it down and are in cover up mode.

Any source about launching missile!? I didn't hear of any.

Underestimating ELINT aircraft is a bad idea.

If France had fired missile ( forget downing IL-20) things would have gone wrong by now. When Su-24 was downed all sorts of voice from sanctions to military options were discussed and situation was heated. This time there is no noise. So I'd safely assume that FREMM hadn't even had a radar lock on IL-20.

Head of the Israeli Air Force held meetings with the Russian Air Force Command about the downed Il-20

Israeli military presented a report to Russian colleagues on the situation in which a Russian plane was shot down.

Israeli Air Force Commander Amikam Norkin held a meeting in Moscow on Thursday with the Russian High- plane IL-20 over the Mediterranean Sea. This was reported by the press service of the Israeli army.

"The delegation of the Israeli Defense Army led by Air Force Commander Amikam Norkin held several meetings with the Russian Air Force commander and senior officials of the Russian command, as well as high-ranking representatives of the Russian military command," the Israeli military communique said, "At the meetings, Israeli officers presented a report to their Russian counterparts on the situation in which a Russian aircraft (IL-20 - TASS commentary) was shot down on Monday evening by Syrian air defense forces, as well as the findings of an investigation conducted by Israelis th army. "

"The meetings were held in accordance with the agreement reached earlier between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," the army noted. "The talks were held in a friendly atmosphere, the representatives of the two countries held a professional, open and transparent discussion on various issues," the press service continued. "Both sides stressed the importance of the interests of both states and the continuation of the implementation of the agreement on deconflictification."

The Israeli military in the Russian capital also provided information on "Iran's ongoing attempts to gain a foothold in Syria militarily and to transfer strategic weapons to [the Lebanese Shiite movement] Hezbollah," the Israeli delegation will continue talks [in the Russian capital] and will return to Israel tomorrow (September 21 - TASS comment), as planned, "- said in a communique of the army department.

On Wednesday, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that on Tuesday, in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin agreed that an expert delegation headed by the Israeli Air Force commander would bring to Moscow his data on the crash of the IL-20. Peskov also said that the Russian leader in the situation with the death of the aircraft is guided by the data of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, but added that the information of Israel will also be studied by Russian experts.
