Russia to license India to make Kalashnikov

Mar 30, 2012 12:55 Moscow Time

Russia is prepared to hand out a licence India to manufacture Kalashnikov sub-machineguns, an official of the Rostekhnologii state corporation, Nikolai Volobuyev, has said at the ongoing arms exhibition in India with reference to the director of the Izhmash factory, which has been making the legendary weapon.

According to Volobuyev, Russia lays emphasis in its military technological cooperation with India on setting up joint ventures and the organization of licensed production, rather than on selling military hardware and armaments that are ready for use.

The Kalashnikov sub-machinegun is one of the most popular the world over. More than 50 countries buy it from Russia.

India will have no interest in the AK-100 series. It is obsolete that even Russian Army doesn't buy it.

AKs are cheap. They are a good option for our police forces and special forces within the police and CRPF.

I am sure there are many soldiers who would like to pick up an AK. But that depends on who wins the rifle tender.
