Yep US of A is so reliable that it can't stop spying on it allies.
Well, I had to look up the details on your allegations because you could not supply them. See Post #21. See if you can discuss based on that. Perhaps you can explain how "turning off GPS" is the same thing as "spying on allies"? Have you ever posted more than one line with a silly emoticon, or are you really that limited in your thinking? Do you think your mama is proud of you?

I meant to say is that Russia is more reliable than US of A.

You are going in to personal lever that is not good for your health and your age.

Again, you fail to make your case and only reveal your ignorance. It makes me wonder about education in India and the quality of educators.

The education here is pretty good. Kaalapani is just acting strange.

Let Russia have as many stations they want. India should have its own stations and its own IRNSS, and have complete control over it.

Technical question: Why are ground stations required? How to they help?

His point is pretty simple. USA cannot be trusted. We saw that during 1971 war, after our 1998 nuclear test, not to mention the large scale spying. On Topic, IRNSS will do the job for India so Im still not convinced as to why we need to collaborate in this field.

See my post #21. Does the link have any merit? THAT is the question.

Cool down gadadhari bheem :D

Maybe he just don't like you and USA but this is not common indian view and they like US people as they are nice and tolerable people but sometime arrogant.
Meet Walter Barnes - All golfers should live so long as to become this kind of old man!
Toward the end of the Sunday service, the Minister asked, "How many of you have forgiven your enemies?"
80% held up their hands. The Minister then repeated his question. All
responded this time, except one man, Walter Barnes.
"Mr. Barnes, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?"
"I don't have any," he replied gruffly.
"Mr. Barnes, that is very unusual. How old are you?"
"Ninety-eight," he replied. The congregation stood up and clapped
their hands.
"Oh, Mr. Barnes, would you please come down in front and tell us
all how a person can live ninety-eight years and not have an enemy in the world?"
The old golfer tottered down the aisle, stopped in front of the pulpit,
turned around, faced the congregation, and said simply, "I outlived all them assholes" - and he calmly returned to his seat.

The GPS satellites need to be
monitored and controlled from the
ground and it is necessary to be in
contact with each satellite for most of
the time to be able to maintain the
level of performance required. To
achieve this there is a master station
located at Falcon Air Force Base,
Colorado Springs, USA.

India Interested in Russia's Glonass Satellite Navigation System
Moscow, Russia (Sputnik) Feb 06, 2015

.

Indian partners have expressed interest in Russia's Glonass satellite navigation systems, a spokesperson for Glonass Union said Thursday.

"At the moment, India is actively developing the market of telematics services... Governmental organizations, including police service, express interest in navigation technologies," the spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

According to Glonass Union president, Alexander Gurko, Russian satellite navigation technologies will be widely used in India in toll paying systems, rapid response emergency systems and asset management.

India is actively developing new industries, such as space exploration and information technologies. It is currently developing a project for the construction of an autonomous satellite navigation system, known as Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

The Glonass project, launched in 1993, is considered to be Russia's version of the GPS (Global Positioning System) network.

The Glonass network currently consists of 28 satellites, of which 24 are operational, allowing real-time positioning and vector data for surface, sea and airborne objects around the globe.

Technical question: Why are ground stations required? How to they help?

Ground Stations are also known as the "Control Segment".

These stations monitor the GPS satellites, checking both their operational health and their exact position in space. The master ground station transmits corrections for the satellite's ephemeris constants and clock offsets back to the satellites themselves. The satellites can then incorporate these updates in the signals they send to GPS receivers.

There are five monitor stations: Hawaii, Ascension Island, Diego Garcia, Kwajalein, and Colorado Springs.

A senior Roscosmos official also said the agency would like to see GLONASS navigation equipment manufactured in India.

Russia and India may sign an agreement for the deployment of three GLONASS stations in India, Sergey Savelyev, deputy head of Roscosmos told the GLONASS Herald magazine.

The countries may sign such an agreement after a GLONASS delegation visits India in June or July, according to Savelyev. "After that, I hope, we will sign a joint protocol, and then we can start making concrete decisions on cooperation, including the placement of Russian GLONASS stations in India," he said.

In addition to placing ground stations in the country, Roscosmos would also like to see GLONASS navigation equipment being manufactured in India.

"We would like to place our own GLONASS ground stations here, as well as jointly produce user equipment and work together on the implementation of technologies such as the ERA-GLONASS. It would be interesting to create a joint venture in India," Savelyev said.

India's GLONASS connections

India has been using GLONASS technology for over the last few years. GLONASS satellites have been launched from the country and the Indian armed forces used GLONASS military signals. When GLONASS opened its showroom in Mumbai in September 2012, its Deputy Chief Designer Igor Kuznetsov told RIR that Indian citizens were already unknowingly using the Russian technology. "The iPhone 4s supports GLONASS technology, so you already use GLONASS in India," Kuznetsov said. "Every manufacturer of chip sets like Qualcomm, Broadcom, STMicroelectronics, use 2-system chipsets, use both GLONASS and GPS...They already have this in their product line."

In December 2013, it was reported that the Russian government is seriously considering the possibility of selling a stake in the development of the GLONASS system to foreign countries, among which India would be given a priority. "We have prioritized the countries -firstly the states where GLONASS may be required for geopolitical reasons," Navigation Information Systems (NIS, formerly NIS GLONASS) Chief Executive Alexander Gurko said. "We could invite India, Kazakhstan, Brazil, South Korea and several other countries into the consortium."

This is one area of cooperation that is likely to get a boost this year and a major agreement on GLONASS could be signed later this year when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India for the 15th annual India-Russia summit.

Well ISRO has time and again proved that they can do things cheaper and better than anyone else in the business. The Russians ( although they are our friends) cant sustain a GPS network thanks to the sanctions. The Americans are not economical, and charge other countries ( and their military) wayyy too much, to pay for their fast food bills. So its a great chance for India to catapult itself to provide GPS to all other countries across the globe!. We have the software and hardware skills, and thankfully the economic backing. We should use this to catapult IRNSS globally. And then we can decide who's GPS do we switch off! We could actually make money off ISRO, and the capital we invested in them!

ISROs constellation will take a while before its operational. Then again we need another network just in case.
Glonass is a good deal vectoring in the current scenario.

though you have said it all, i would like to add a road block to it, to get a global coverage we may need at least 40 satellites that's too much money esp. for a developing country like India (which cant be explained to our narrow mindset Indians), though we can make money out of it, the returns will be slow.
but right now we are in right direction 1600 km around India can cater to both civilian and military users, we can be expand it slowly. and yes it is a good money making Idea.

I think what the Russians want is to place GLONASS ground stations in India and Indian IRNSS ground stations in Russia similar to what they want have with the Chinese Beidou system and with the Americans , nothing wrong with that infact more co-operation will be better for India.
Our IRNSS is an excellent system and will be up and running in another 6 months max and each each satellite has a lifetime of 11 years which is good . To have a system comparable to glonass with 29 satellites we need another 5 to 7 years and 5 to 6 billion dollars now nothing wrong with co-operating with the Russians.
