Pakistan Friday gave authorisation to Russia to join the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project after Moscow’s head of security services met Pakistani officials.

Russia’s Federal Security Services chief, Alexander Bogdanov, met top Pakistani officials in what was described as a secret meeting. This was the first visit of a Russian intelligence agency’s head to Pakistan in 14 years.

Bogdanov reportedly requested to join the CPEC which was accepted by the Pakistani officials who granted Russia access to warm waters via Gwadar Sea Port.

Earlier this week, Pakistan secured an additional $8.5 billion of investment from Beijing as part of the countries' joint energy, transport and infrastructure plan.

That is on top of the $46-billion CPEC project, which focuses on road building and energy infrastructure to end chronic power shortages in Pakistan and to link China's landlocked north-west with the deep-water port Gwadar on the Arabian Sea.

"This has now all been approved, so this is an additional $8.5 billion to the $46 billion we had already, so we are now close to $55 billion," said Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal.

Trade activities formally commenced on November 13 after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif welcomed the first large shipment of Chinese goods through the renovated port of Gwadar.

The trade caravan reached Gwadar from China under the strict security cover of Pakistan Army and other security agencies.

Russians are there for themselves.
We can leverage their presence. But we should rather focus on keep Pakistan on boiling point and complete the chahbahar.

look at the picture and think ..........

does it make sense for russia to join CPEC (for trade)

Iranian ports r there (nearer) so why go to gwadar ? (blue route)

Russian Siberian regions dont have any industries so why cross Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan Kazakhstan Afghanistan or even through adjoining Chinese areas from there ? (red route)
what will they export ?:biggrin2:
oil ? (what about the cost in infra development)
and who will buy ?:biggrin2:

who will bear the cost of infra development on the Russian side ?
china or Russia (i doubt it)
lolzzzz:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

looks like another SU35 kind of hysteria from porkies

Moscow wanted to reached warm waters in 1978 that is why it invaded Afghanistan . I wonder, why pakis allowed Russia now, it would and should have allowed Russia in 1978 at least it whould have saved her from producing Taliban and 10000000 dead till now billion dallar on WOT and terrorism.

On Russia joining CPEC who knows, whats the bigger game.

Right now pakis are acting like Ran.di,,, sab a jao, le lo hamari but India se bacha lo Baluchistan ko

Sounds like BS, but not sure.
First FSB head is Alexander Bortnikov, not Bogdanov. Second why he is (overtly) involved in economic project? It is a bit strange.
And finally it says he "requested" them to join CPEC. Why they would bother with shoe-cleaner pak, they would instead ask master chan.

@porky_kicker No need to go through Georgia and Armenia when there is Caspian. :)

Yes, it doesn't make much economic sense, at least not yet for Rus to join chinese project cpec.

Perhaps later on, even chinese might think it is a wasteful project, who knows.
