Russia and UAE to start working on 5th generation fighter 2018

Russia and the United Arab Emirates will get down to joint work on a future light 5th generation jet on the basis of MiG-29 as of 2018, the chief of Russia’s Rostec corporation, Sergey Chemezov, told the media on Feb. 20.

"We believe we shall start working on this plane as of next year. It will take seven to eight years to develop," Chemezov said on the sidelines of the international weapons show IDEX-2017.

"A future fifth generation plane will be created on the basis of Russia’s Mig-29," he added.

Earlier, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said that Russia and the UAE had concluded an agreement on industrial cooperation in military engineering, which enabled them to launch a fifth generation fighter project.

The head of the United Aircraft Corporation Yuri Slyusar said the work on the plane was at the initial phase and Russia was in the process of drafting proposals. The UAC would participate in the project as the leader organization, and Sukhoi and MiG as co-contributors.

Russia and the UAE have concluded an initial agreement to develop a light fighter aircraft based on the MiG-29 jet.
Work could start next year on the project which aims to manufacture in Russia and assemble in the UAE, Sergei Chemezov, the CEO of ROSTEC, the state-owned conglomerate which controls several Russian defense enterprises, told reporters at the IDEX 2017 show in Abu Dhabi.
He did not reveal who the partner would be from the UAE side. The Gulf state has been trying to enter into the defense and aviation manufacturing sector and has several partnerships mainly with Western manufacturers.
Demand for low-priced fighter jets in increasing in the region in the face of increasing asymmetric which do not have sophisticated defensive systems to detect and bring down fighter jets.
The low end of the fighter jet market has been taken by the Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 aircraft which has made sales in Nigeria besides Pakistan and is knocking at the door of several Gulf nations.
A Russian source said that countries in the Middle East had started to look at Russian weapons and aircraft seriously after its involvement in the Syrian conflict.

It is based on Mig29/35 platform. Just like Sukhoi corp converted Flanker SU-30/35 to PAKFA, MIG corp. is coverting MIG-29/35 to a stealth fighter.
