Rename India as Bharat, says Congress MP

Panaji, Aug 9 (IANS) India should be renamed Bharat in the constitution of the country, a Congress parliamentarian has demanded in a constitutional amendment bill introduced in parliament Thursday.

Congress MP from Goa Shantaram Naik, in the statement of objects and reasons of the bill, has said that 'Bharat' was a much more wholesome concept and that the word 'India' merely indicates territorial dimensions of the country.

'India' denotes a territorial concept whereas 'Bharat' signifies much more than the mere territories. "When we praise our country, we say, 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and not 'India ki Jai'," Naik's bill stated.

Naik's earlier bill on the subject introduced in the Rajya Sabha had lapsed on account of his term coming to an end. However, after his re-election, he has reintroduced the bill.

"The grounds for changing the name of the country into simply 'Bharat' are many. But, more than grounds or reasons, it is the sense of patriotism that the name generates and electrifies the people of this country that is relevant," Naik told IANS over phone from New Delhi.

Rename India as Bharat, says Congress MP
+1.
India is phoren name given by phirangs (read Greeks).
But more than the name, it is the thinking and prominent culture that has to stand on our roots. What will the superficial name change achieve?
Congress is thinking out loud and desperate these days.

Hind mahasagar has been in use in Hindi for ages.

Bharat is also in use locally, watch Hindi news channels or even local regional channels.

It is already "Bharat", rather he should have proposed to omit the term "India" , as it ignores the rich past of Bharat.

Writers feted with Masti awards
The State government will submit a proposal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the MPs to amend the Constitution to rename India as 'Bharat', Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has said.

He was responding to the demands put forth by scholar M Chidanandamurthy during a function held in the City on Saturday to launch two volumes of 'Masti Avara Samagra Sahitya Avalokana' and presentation of Masti awards.

He also said programmes will be launched to promote Kannada as a classical language, at a cost of Rs 50 crore. He promised a BDA site for the Masti Sahitya Bhavan, grants for promoting Kannada literature and translation of Kannada literary works and construction of Sahitya Bhavan.

Reviewing the book, critic C N Ramachandran said with a collection of articles and critical essays on Masti's literature the book gives a comprehensive picture of development of Kannada criticism in the 20th century.

Stating that the articles compiled in the book have several interesting details Ramachandran said one of the authors has mentioned that the great writers in Kannada including T S Venkannaiah and Masti used to correspond in English with equally great writers of Kannada despite their mastery in Kannada language.

The volumes, edited by writer Mavinakere Ranganathan of Masti Trust, have 165 articles covering criticism on Masti's literature, his periodical 'Jeevana', translations and autobiography. The volumes brought out nearly 30 years after 'Srinivasa' a felicitation volume was published, has several additional attractions such as Masti's speech made after accepting Jnanpith award. The two volumes also serve as a source for socio-cultural study of the society-in-transition in the pre- and post- Independent India.

Masti awards for the year 2010 were given to three novelists on the occasion. Saraswati Nataraj got the first prize for her 'Mane' Dr Kamala Hemmige's 'Kichchillada Bege' won the second prize while the third prize went to Usha Narasimhan for her 'Kamini Kalpa'.
Besides, Sumangala was honoured for her prize winning short story 'Kalittalli Kaludari'.

The name "Bharat(a)" is about as meaningless as the name "India". The one and only true name of this land is "Aryavarta", the Land of the Aryas.

Aryavarta ki jai !
