The Rape of Nanking is a very sensitive and a touchy issue with both the Chinese and the Japanese people.
The Chinese claim of the huge number of Chinese butchered have been contested by the Japanese and that has not gone well with the Chinese at all. That is why the are always furious whenever any Japanese politician visits the Yasukuni Shrine.
Japanese PM Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine has struck a chord of distaste and disgust in the Chinese heart and the Chinese apparently have good reasons too since it brings back the imagery of the Nanking issue. No one appreciates the horrors that have visited them in history, and for which they could take no reciprocity or defend themselves, least amongst them the Han Chinese,
Abe's strong stand on bolstering Japan's defence, as also standing up to China over the islands, along with his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine has revived the images of the horrors at Naking resulting in China's strident nationalism and the desire to confront Japan one to one, now that China is no longer the opium debilitated mass that fell prey to the Japanese warlords, and instead is a rising power in the world.
Nanking may prove to be a centrepiece and be spark for more troubles to follow.
