CHENNAI: The mercy petitions of four Veerappan associates, sentenced to death in a landmine blast case, were rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee, an advocate S Balamurugan, appearing for the accused, said.

"We have received information from reliable sources that the message has been sent to Belgaum jail authorities and apparently it has also been conveyed to the prisoners," Balalmurugan, who is also the Tamil Nadu PUCL state secretary, said.

The dreaded sandalwood bandit Veerappan was killed in an encounter with the Tamil Nadu police of the special task force in October 2004.

The four accused, Gnanprakasham, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran, were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in January 2004 in connection with the killing of 21 policemen in a landmine blast at Palar in Karnataka near the inter-state border in 1993. They were sentenced to undergo life imprisonment by the Mysore court. But the government moved the Supreme Court, which awarded them the death sentence. Their mercy pleas have been pending since 2004.

A division bench of Justice YK Sabharwal and Justice BN Agrawal had converted the life imprisonment of convicts to death sentence and dismissed the convicts' appeals against the order of conviction passed by a Special TADA court in Karnataka.

It is a coincidence that cannot be overlooked. The mercy petitions of four Veerappan associates, sentenced to death in a landmine blast case, were rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee even as a trilingual film based on the forest brigand is going to be released this week after a legal battle.

The four accused - Gnanprakasham, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran - were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in Jan 2004 in connection with the killing of 21 policemen in a landmine blast at Palar in Karnataka near the inter-state border in 1993.

Their mercy pleas have been pending since 2004. They are currently lodged in Belgaum jail. The rejection of mercy petition was disclosed by advocate of the convicts S Balamurugan.

The trilingual film (Attahasa in Kannada), Veerappan in Telugu and Vanayuddham in Tamil) on Veerappan is directed by AMR Ramesh, and it has finally been cleared for screening. Veerappan's wife Muthulakshmi had taken the director to the court.
Ramesh said the film, cleared by the Madras High Court, would be released commecially on Feb 14 or 15. The movie stars Kishore as Veerappan, Arjun Sarja as STF chief K Vijayakumar, Suresh Oberoi as Rajkumar, Sulakshana as Parvathamma Rajkumar, Jayachitra as Jayalalithaa and Vijayalakshmi as Muthulakshmi.

Amnesty demands halt on execution of Veerapan associates

New Delhi: Amnesty International on Thursday demanded a halt on the execution of four associates of slain sandalwood smuggler Veerapan.

"India must immediately halt the impending executions of four prisoners whose mercy petitions were rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee," Amnesty International said in a statement.

The four prisoners — Gnanprakasham, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran — were sentenced to death in a 1993 landmine blast case.

The President's move came just days after the hanging of Afzal Guru -– the second execution in India in less than three months.

"This government has executed more people since November 2012 than in the previous ten years. To continue such a regressive trend would be truly shameful," said G Ananthapadmanabhan, chief executive of Amnesty International India.

"Given the political climate and the two other recent executions, there is a real concern that these four men will be put to death soon. The Indian government must ensure that this does not happen."

The four prisoners were originally sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Karnataka set up under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA), but their sentences were converted to death penalty by the Supreme Court in 2004. They had filed mercy petitions in 2004.

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty as a violation of the right to life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and as the ultimate cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment.

The organisation opposes capital punishment in all cases without exception, regardless of the nature or circumstances of the crime; guilt, innocence or other characteristics of the individual; or the method used by the state to carry out the execution.

Court to decide execution date of four Veerapan associates on Monday

A Mysore court on Monday will decide the dates for the execution of the four associates of Veerappan convicted in the 1993 Palar blast case.

HINDALGA GETTTING READY

The authorities at Hindalga Jail, where the last hanging took place in 1983, have started preparations for the execution of the four convicts.

Meanwhile, Union ministry of home affairs had issued a letter to the state home department, confirming the rejection of the mercy plea by the President to the state home department. IGP (prisons) and the superintendent of Hindalga Jail have informed the same to the convicts.

The process of installing gallows will be soon initiated soon after the TADA court in Mysore will sign the death warrant. The warrant will mention the date and time of hanging. According to the jail manual, the hanging has to be done before sunrise.

As if life imprisonment is better than hanging. Either move to less # of sentence years(say <10) or there is not much difference between killing a guy everyday for 20+ years or actually hanging him.
