The question here is why premadasa is so anti-india to the extent that he went and made a deal with LTTE to get IPKF out of the country which their own govt brought in? what is it that makes Lanka wary of india even today despite India being too lax on their country??

He was trying to act like a patriot IMO. When the Indo-Sri Lanka pact was signed all most every Sinhalese thought that India was going to invade Sri Lanka as she had done so many times before. The JRJ government made the situation worse by crushing the civil resentments and try to flirt with India. Premadasa on the other hand, most likely opposed what JRJ was doing but couldn't do anything about the situation because he was made powerless by the constitution even though he was the Prime Minister. He may have tried to gain the hearts of the patriots whose support was waning fast with his government. Also he had the same impression that India was on a invasion.

This threatening might look like a silly outburst of an emotionally wrecked punk, but viewed as apart of the big picture in context of Indo-Pak and Indo-Chinese relations, Lanka will eventually turn out to be a thorn in India's foot in the long run. The Sinhala mentality has not at all changed.

I think war should had happen alteast that way either srilanla tamil problem would had solved .either they would had got their homeland for ever or for never. Now their fate hangs in balance

Most of our neighboring nations are against India.One or Two is fine but when it is all the must be something fishy. Anyway it is very hard to believe that indian politicians those care a jack about their fellow citizens and ruining this nation mercilessly, are not playing foul with other countries interest. By the way I really enjoyed this threat given by Ranasinghe Premadasa. Now they should allow some Chinese destroyers in their vicinity to keep a check on already frightened India.

Tired of explaining this..really. If all we wanted was a free Tamil Nadu we could have gone our way in '47 itself. That we stuck with this Union at its weakest, most fragile point in a long time should say something.

To answer your question - NO. With a capital 'N'.

What would have happened in case of Eezham becoming a reality is either of the two scenarios :

1) Eezham existing as an independent country side by side with India like Nepal or Bhutan. Free movement and such stuff.

2) Eezham becoming a satellite state of India and finally merging with India if they want, like Sikkim.

I personally think it would have been the former.

But going beyond that, one more thing - if the Union Govt continues to hold contempt for our concerns, emotions and most importantly the very lives of our fishermen in search of misplaced alliances, then there is a very real chance of Tamil nationalism taking the place of Indian nationalism. That is NOT to mean secessionist demand will be put forth or any armed insurgency would spring up - because there is no point in that and we have our own lives to deal with, but just that the Indian identity would simply be forgotten and be just 'nominal' citizens for pure economic interests of the state with no real interest in it. The ball is in the Center's court.

This "boogie man" was spread by some anti-Tamil Hindian officers in Indian gov. Dr. Thanjai Nalankilli, considered one of the foremost thinkers on Tamil nationalism, smashed this argument to pieces in his article

Not so fast. Instead of asking Lankan army to attack the Indian army, Premadasa armed LTTE which it was already in war with Indian army. LTTE won the war in 1990 and Indian army left Tricomalee harbour in disarray. I saw the video of how Indian army retreated into waitning indian navy ships.

what the Lankan people think that they are Aryan descendant!from ancient times the Indo-Aryans called Lankan people as "Rakshasha" which meant that they were non-Aryans and may had some Dravidian origin!so its really a pity if they are doing serious racial discrimination against the Tamils on the basis of the AIT!

mate please don't spread this distorted version of history!IPKF didn't leave Lanka because the LTTE had defeated them,infact the IPKF was largely successful in diminishing the military power of LTTE on the nothern part of Lanka:cool2:!IPKF was only pulled out of Lanka because Rajiv lost the election and the new Govt. under V.P.Singh ordered the pullout because the common Indians were against this using of force by India on its own people(read:the Lankan Tamils).it was that corrupt and traitor Congress coalition Govt. led by even more corrupt Rajiv Gandhi which sent the IPKF in Lanka to crush the Tamils there in the first place!
