Re: Prithvi missiles to be replaced by more-capable Prahar: DRDO

High mobility is best defence and finest concealment. Prahar missile is highly mobile like MBRLs. They need to position in an area which gives them quick get away and quick deployment to firing position. By putting them in dug up positions or underground bunkers, the very purpose of this missile will be defeated.

Dug in Position does not meant lack of mobility, Its effective as long as it does it purpose that is providing effective camouflage from Radar and eyes and Protection from enemy indirect fire..

The Vehicle / System can always scoot..

During both gulf wars, Iraqies deployed thr tanks in dug up positions and when they wanted to scoot, they cud not as the mud around them had solidified. If you put a missile like prahaar in dug up position, you meet the same fate. A dug up position does not provide you any protection from radars or indirect fire as you remain prone to top attack. Dug up position only provides safety from direct fire by lowering your exposed signature.
My post regarding bunkers was in response to the cold war era game of silos and not in true bunkers and that is what the member also meant.

Not necessary it also applicable to us, It is something that Armoured units do here also in Punjab so does over thar so does anyother Country operating tanks..

In dug in position for system like Prahaar / MBRL / MBT , The vehicle body in under ground only the top is open which is covered by camouflage ( anti-radar / thermal ) net, After firing from its position it scoot from there to get in another similar position..

I think you need to ask arty guys how much time it takes to create a ramp to get into dug in position and also to get out of it? In Kargil war we perfected the art of firing MBRLs in a moving mode to avoid counter fire from PA arty as they had arty locating radars while we did not have them.

It is true, But we are talking about Prahaar which is self powered and 100-150km away from any arty battery and enemy observation posts..

For Prahaar the thread is from deep penetration jets / drones and concealment is important until it fires and move to another safe conceal location..

Dropped what must been 6-7 cbu97/cbu 105 and destroyed over a hundred t72's.

These days Tanks do not operate unless there is assured Air Cover

If there is no air support or SAM protection even dumb bombs will destroy all tanks

You dont need sensor fused CBU for that

Dug in Positions if used will be only for Infantry and Mortar Units

Anything Bigger in Size such as Artillerry Gun Emplacements will be immediately Picked up by UAVs

Saddam did nt Know or did nt understand Many things in his life

He didnt even understand Geo Politics before Gulf War 1

So forget about understanding Technology

And After 9/ 11 He did not understand American Anger and also
That His Own people Hated him and His sons and his regime
and that they would pull down and trample his statues or else he would be alive today

He also did not understand The Shia Sunni Divide in Iraq

Dictators only like to listen what they think or feel is right

Saddam's aside

Imo india is placing to much emphasis on ground attack instead of thousands of t90's. I wish
We bought more attack helicopters.

Whether enemy assets are destroyed by Attack Helicopters or Jaguars or Mig 27 or Mirages is
a matter of planning and detail

India is well aware of PAF's Capabilities for air interdiction and close air support

All our exercises are IAF and IA operating jointly to defeat both PAF and PA

Our tanks will not only have Air cover but Also SAM cover and lastly
Tanks move in after an area has been properly pounded by the Artillerry

Developing a more Indian defence

On tactical missiles like Prahar

Prahar will go for user trial shortly, this year. Prahar is a good [surface-to-surface] system with a range of 140 km. It will have an accuracy of two metres and that is a very vital addition. We are also enhancing the range of Pinaka rockets from the existing 40 km to 60 km for Pinaka mark II. Prahar will be the third layer to cover up to 140 km, which is a very potent layer.
