Powerless and clueless: 684 million Indians without power

Extracts:

NEW DELHI: It was a Terrible Tuesday that 684 million Indians are not going to forget in a hurry. In the world's biggest blackout that affected one-tenth of the global population, 21 states and Union Territories went on the blink after three arterial power lines collapsed at 1 pm.

The northern, eastern and north-eastern regions suffered the outage when their respective grids collapsed in quick succession with devastating effect. The blackout disrupted normal life, rail and air services as well as industrial production across sectors.
More than 300 trains were affected. Many others are likely to be cancelled. Airports, hospitals and BPOs functioned with their back-up generators. In Delhi, once again commuters had a harrowing time, and a scary one for those who were stuck in the Metro Rail trains that stopped in their tracks several feet above the street or deep inside tunnels. Roads were gridlocked as traffic lights stopped working.

In Kolkata, the metro was not hit by the outage, but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked all government offices to shut early and urged the private sector and schools to do the same to protect against commuter chaos in the evening. The Metro was not affected as the city largely remained isolated since power is supplied by a private firm.

Calcutta was least affected.

It goes to show that Private ownership of Public Utilities ensure a better deal for the Nation and the consumer.

The underground metro service in Kolkata, however, remained unaffected.

Several hospitals in West Bengal also experienced power cut, including some of the government hospitals of Kolkata.

In Kolkata, most parts of the city, where power is supplied by the the privately-owned CESC Ltd., were not affected much except some small periods of power cuts.

Sir, Kolkata Metro is built like a tank (pun intended).

I remember, MG Road was flooded, and there was waist deep water. I climbed the flight of stairs into the Metro Station, and then climbed down inside - Lo, and behold, the Metro was running fine!

^ from the article above

Moving Sushilkumar Shinde out of the power ministry now is like changing the captain of the Titanic when it's reeling after hitting

a giant iceberg. The country is in the midst of an unprecedented power crisis. For two days in a row, the

grid has collapsed. This doesn't cover Shinde with any glory. Yet he's promoted as home minister.
Even if that's

ignored, what's pertinent at this point of time is that Shinde is likely to have some clue about the power problem; a new minister -

who will be holding additional charge of the portfolio - will possibly have none. So, what does the change

indicate? The irrelevance of ministers? Never mind who's in charge, the net result is the same?

Let me rephrase what you said: "This crisis can be fixed only by NARENDRA MODI." :troll:"¨"¨On a serious note, I am glad things have returned to normalcy.
"¨"¨"©That line should be written before you rephrased my post because it's the reality.....What I posted, is what congress' saying. :p

This is an inept govt which thrives on ill conceived and badly executed populism. In short, politics decides economy and national well being.

It is a Govt, where not only the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing, but also does not know what the right hand, itself, is doing!

A confused lot!

And Chidambaram will lead us into further chaos with his hectoring and sneering of every other Ministry and the States, while showcasing himself as Daniel Come to Judgement.

Even the Business Houses and Corporates, which are his allies in power, are not too confident of his much hyped capabilities this time around.

Manmohan, of course, in this doom and gloom of governance, will remain in paralysis with the beatitude of the Buddha in total meditation and profound heavenly silence!

Isn't someone in his family connected with some agency or the other?

He did make a valiant defence of such a person in the Lok Sabha with more sentimentality than substance.

One source said that Tejinder Singh "operates in tandem with a Major Hooda (retd) and his son, both of whom are well known to Karthik Chidambaram, the influential son of Home Minister P Chidambaram". The younger Hooda, a presumed relative of the Haryana Chief Minister, is alleged to be "active in promoting the products of certain agencies, including foreign entities".
Who is Lt-Gen Tejinder Singh?

Tejinder Singh is that Lt Gen (retd) who allegedly offered Gen VK a bribe on behalf of the Tatra licencee of UK.

In the NDTV Debate on the Blackout, one of the chaps said that Technology is also to blame.

He specifically mentioned Chinese turbines and other power equipment which were not up to the mark, but had been bought because it was cheap, as one of the source of the problem!

If that is true, then this is what happens and will happen if you cut corners!

Can't wait to see Indians do what they usually do, blaming China for the failures they are going through.

Chinese electricity grip is also made up of Chinese equipments, but no outage of such a scale ever happened in China.

Anyway, it is always easier to blame China.

Either the far better Indian equipments you bragged about are actually a big joke, or Indian people are just stupid to buy the third rate Chinese equipments.

Your choice!
