China has placed an order for 250 Al-222-25 afterburning turbofans from the Ukraine to power its new L-15 jet trainer. That's enough jet engines for more than 100 trainers.

Ukraine Wins Engine Contract for Chinese L-15 Jet Trainer Production | Aviation International News
China has ordered 250 AI-222-25F turbofans from the Ukraine to power production versions of the Hongdu L-15 advanced jet trainer. The –25F is an afterburning version of the AI-222 that was first flown on the Lead-In Fighter Trainer (LIFT) version of the L-15 in October 2010.

The original AI-222 was developed by the Ivchenko Progress design bureau at Zaporozhye for the Russian Yak-130 jet trainer, and was then fitted to three of the four L-15 prototypes. The new order suggests that China will not put the basic version of the L-15 into production.

The AI-222-25F develops 9,250 pounds (4,200 kg) of thrust at full afterburner, enabling the 21,550-pound (9,800 kg)-mtow L-15 LIFT twinjet to accelerate to Mach 1.6. At a price of $10 million, the Chinese aircraft is expected to sell well in international markets. The LIFT version can potentially carry air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.

The engines will be manufactured at the main Motor Sich factory, also in Zaporozhye. Some components will be provided by Moscow-based Salut, which manufactures the AI-222 for the Yak-130. Deliveries will begin later this year, and are due to be completed by 2015.

Progress general designer Igor Kravchenko told AIN that the AI-222-25F is the first-ever Ukrainian engine to be fitted with an afterburner. "With its development, Progress has mastered reheat technologies, which we are now seeking to apply on a fighter engine in the class of thrust up to 44,000 pounds [20 tonnes]," he said. In its primary 22,000-pound (10-tonne) version, this engine could replace Russia's Klimov RD-93 on the FC-1 and its Pakistan air force version the JF-17 Thunder.

At the recent Aviation Expo 2011 in Beijing, Progress also offered the higher-thrust SBM1V version of the TV3-117 turboshaft that powers the Mi-17 helicopter. It would boost performance for hot/high operations, such as in mountainous western China. The country has recently taken delivery of 32 additional Mi-17s, and could acquire more from the new joint venture with Russian Helicopters.
The L-15 is an advanced trainer aircraft built by Nanchang based Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation. The aircraft made its maiden flight on 13 March 2006. The aircraft's general designer is Mr. Zhang Hong (张弘), and the development is reportedly assisted by Yakovlev OKB of Russia. The L-15 is a direct rival to the Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation (GAIC) JL-9/FTC-2000 Mountain Eagle in competition for the People's Liberation Army Air Force's (PLAAF) next-generation advanced trainer aircraft program.

yesterday...July 1st 2013...the maiden flight of PLAAF's JL-10( AJT status) ... it is another milestone of the Hongdu Aircraft Company's L15 project which is finally accept by the PLAAF after the 10 years' development....before it got the official code name(JL-10), this project was internationally marketed as L15 and got some orders already . within this year, L15 would be delivered to some African nation , the first batch is 6 units.

This is very alarming indeed. China will be even more reliant on CIS for engines than ever before. They should have figured how to make a simple trainer engine by now. Cutting numbers of jet trainers to 100 shows a significant decrease from the 170 J-8 trainers they have in service now. Shows the things to come for PLAAF.

See, despite all this, @shiphone derisively referred to Ukraine as a second rate European power (on the Sukhoi-35-flanker-e- thread in post # 541).

This is when Chinese posters themselves keep providing all the evidences to the contrary. China's heavy dependence on Ukraine for military hardware is all too well-known

May 1st.... the CCTV broadcasted special TV programs on various channels to celebrate the International Labor day...

one of the scenes came from the L-15/JL-10 trainer's Pulse-line assembly workshop where we could see quite some interesting things...

-------------------------
the packed assembly line...few weeks ago. the Serial Production No. 9X frames has appeared which means so far the order of L15/JL-10 varients has exceeded 100 shared by PLAAF and African Nations...

------------------

the rolling out of the L-15B Light Attacker... this one should be the first prototype, the maiden flight haven't took place yet but it will be very soon...

the particularly long Airspeed probe for prototypes....the ECM pod on the tail tip means this is more than a trainer

5-blade IFF antenna--it is a Western Product not the standard PLAAF IFF device which means it is a Export airplane... the Fairing of ECM device on the tail tip is also striking...

the Engine is the one with afterburner- AI-222-25F ... the same as the L-15 LIFT varient...the AJT varient and JL-10 in PLAAF use the AL-222-25 without wet thrust...

typical recognition feature of L-15B...longer nose, larger intake, ECM pod, Engine, Wingtip pylons...etc

more L-15B under construction and they share the Assembly line with L-15 AJT and JL-10

the L-15B Multi-function Attacker Fighter Trainer was first revealed on Air Show China 2016 in Zhuhai although it was said for a while but few attention was caught... Last year on that event HongDu Aviation displayed the model and claimed that a 12-set contract had been signed.. it should be an African Nation just as that the Launch Customer was also a African Air force...

------
nine hardpoints are arranged for various payloads including a gun pod

-----
it seemed a single seater plane but the rolling-out was Tandem cockpit

-----
the nose is lengthened which is same as the LIFT varient ,longer than the AJT varient with a PESA radar, typical function range: 75KM

--------------

the enlarged air intake for the After-Burner version Engine

------------
the rear fuselage comparation

if you know the history between T100,L15 and YAK-130, you will understand the similarity.

The T100 is basically a USA version of M346(locally manufactured to win the contract), while M346 is a Italian version of Yak-130(with western engine and avionics).

L15 was related to Yak-130 to some extent(YAK provided technical support/instruction for initial design under some MOU/contract). Since PLA AF want to experience afterburning in the trainer, it has a longer fuselage to fit into engine with afterburner.

it will be very interesting if USA AF chose T-100. Yak did an amazing job. I think Yak-130 is the most beautiful advanced trainer.

Beautiful aircraft! But the least well known of China's many projects -- J-20, F-31, J-10, Y-20, J-11B, J-15, J-16, etc.

JL10/L15 updates:

The JL10 is now one of four "pulse" manufacturing/assembly lines for military aircraft in China:

Both the AJT and LIFT variants of this jet trainer have ground attack functions:

Hongdu/AVIC are integrating the TL20 glide bomb onto the L15/JL10:
https://lt.cjdby.net/thread-2453482-1-1.html

The PLAAF and the Chinese Navy continue to take delivery of JL10 and JL10H AJT variants respectively:

Navy

Airforce AJT airframe pictured with a gun pod attached:

A JL10B LIFT/Attack variant for the PLAAF had its first flight December 21st 2017. Note the stretched nose for the PESA radar, the after-burning engines, the ECM pod on top of the vertical stabilizer and the IFF antennae just forward of the cockpit:

So what's new? Name me a Chinese aircraft that hasn't been copied!
If Yakolev themselves aren't calling the L15 a copy of their 130 AJT, I don't understand why our esteemed Indian friends feel the need to do so.

http://www.yak.ru/ENG/FIRM/art_switch.php?art=4

Another "relative" of the Yak-130 (a remote one, frankly) is the L-15 supersonic trainer China develops with Yakovlev's assistance. Says Yakovlev's Director General Oleg Demchenko: "Our full-scale cooperation with the Chinese aircraft industry dates back to 2000 when the AVIC II corporation, based on Yakovlev's advances in Yak-130 development, invited us to join the L-15 supersonic trainer development programme. The L-15 developer is the Hongdu company in the city of Nanchang, a specialist in developing such planes. Its K-8 trainer is in production and sells well enough on the global market. The L-15 is being developed to meet the requirements of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Yakovlev's role is consulting, which can be called scientific and technical support of the aircraft development programme. We are participating at the preliminary design stage, while the Chinese side is fully in charge of working out the design documentation and making the aircraft. This is a Chinese plane. The Chinese designers just correlate their technical solutions with the opinion of ours." A full-scale mock-up of the new-configuration L-15 was unveiled at the Zhuhai air show in November 2004. Hongdu plans to build its first flying L-15 in 2005. Its flight trials are slated for the same year.
