Pilatus to set up manufacturing facility in India
Swiss aircraft maker Pilatus is planning to set up a manufacturing facility in India. The company, which is supplying 75 basic training aircraft PC-7 to the Indian Air Force, intends to set up a facility that will initially manufacture airframes for its single-engine turboprop PC-12 aircraft, Jim Roche, deputy CEO of the company, told FE ahead of the DefExpo. "Our long-term goal is to be capable to design, develop and manufacture the complete range of our aircraft products in India, for the Indian market primarily, but with a view to expansion within the region," he added.
To this end, the Swiss company plans to establish Pilatus Aircraft India in the next 36 months. In the meantime they have been granted permission to open their project office.
Responding to a question on the company's new plans to cater to the Indian military and para-military forces in India, Roche said, "Since our product range is diverse, we are in a position to offer the right product for all requirements of the Indian armed forces. To this end, we have already commenced dialogue with government authorities. Pilatus sees a significant future growth potential not only in the trainer segment but also in areas such as transport, air ambulance, special missions and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance." Roche is also promoting the twin-jet PC-24 aircraft in India. "The first aircraft will roll out in production line in 2017," he said.
Pilatus has entered into a separate offset contract with the Indian government, tallying 30% of the trainer contract's value in accordance with Indian defence procurement policy.
