Pak minister calls Taliban 'true followers' of Islam
In a potentially controversial statement, a Pakistani federal minister belonging to a religious party has said the Taliban are the "true followers" of Islam and the US has been "creating hatred against them."
"Ulema (clerics) and Taliban are the true followers of Islamic ideology and America is the biggest terrorist of the world, which is creating hatred against them," Tourism Minister Maulana Attaur Rehman, whose Jamiat Uleme-e-Islam (JUI) party is a partner in the PPP-led government, told a public gathering in Mansehra in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Rehman, the brother of JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, told the gathering on Tuesday that the ongoing spate of terrorist attacks could not be eliminated until the US and the world gave equal rights and respect to the Muslims.
"It is a misconception that Ulema and Taliban are against co-existence of people with different religions. In fact, it is America which is against interfaith harmony to maintain its hegemony on the world," Rehman said.
Leading Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney had recently petitioned the British government to bar Maulana Fazlur Rehman from entering that country because of his alleged extremist ideologies and links to the Taliban.
