No details given in the article, but shows lack of discipline on patrol; fault lies with patrol leader.

Does this happen with IA patrols, in the experience of anyone here?

Was a 2LT reading the map? :)

It happens. As a SSG I lost a goofy soldier from a 3 man team on a map and compass training course.

Just looked up and he was gone.

He showed up eventually when he got hungry.
Strange are the ways of life on LOC...

the distances between Indian and Pakistani post can vary from 50 m to 2 km etc depending on ground configuration and needs.
It is natural that the soldier may meander around and loose their way where the distances between the posts of the two sides are more.
The conditions along the LoC is very harsh being very cold mountainious terrain.

So soldiers can get into each others sides due to many reasons.
Fear, hallucination, constant pressure of being under fire, being afraid of terrorist actions and infiltration attempts, bad weather, meeting calls of nature, water requirement compulsions, being sick and not having full control over senses, disciplinary causes and deliberate crossing over the other side and some times consumption of intoxicating weed being inside jungles which produces psychotropic effects and lastly and more often being under the influence of alcoholism or drugs.

Many a times Pakistani soldiers act as guide to terrorist for infiltrating through the LoC. At lesser number of times depression can cause such acts on the part of soldiers....

To sum up, human factors are not limited and soldiers are human.

How can a pak soldier inadvertantly cross a fence like this?

Indian Army did the right thing of shooting him for intruding into India and firing on our soldiers.
That fence is on the IB I think.

That fence is on the IB I think.
On Loc fence is not as uniform and strong as on IB due to terrain and weather.

Some where the fence is behind the post and other places it is ahead of the posts, some where in vicinity and somwhere far away from the posts.

In Naushera it is somewhere ahead and at many places behind the posts...

Pakistani soldier reaching Indian posts or vice verse is not uncommon on LoC where sometime both draw water from the same spring... and sometimes exchange daily greetings...

Indian troops killed soldier after questioning: Pakistan Army

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army on Friday condemned what it described as the "inhuman and brutal killing" of one of its soldiers by Indian troops near the de facto Kashmir border – the first deadly exchange since a truce was agreed a month ago.

The Pakistani military condemned the killing, saying the soldier had become lost and crossed the LoC "inadvertently", and civilians had seen him being questioned by Indians troops.

"We condemn such an inhuman and brutal act of killing of our soldier after he had identified himself and explained his position," a spokesman of the military's public relations wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said.

The ISPR spokesman said that soldier Sepoy Ikhlaq had lost his way between two border posts earlier on Thursday and inadvertently crossed over the LoC in Khoi Ratta sector.

A few civilians at the scene saw the soldier being questioned by the Indians, he said.

"This is not the first such event. We have returned Indian soldiers in the past, who had similarly strayed," said the spokesman.

He added that the Directors General Military Operations of the two countries spoke on the hotline this morning when the Indian DGMO revealed that the Pakistani soldier had been killed by their troops.

Sepoy Ikhlaq is a resident of Kallar Saydan, 22 years old, and had four years of service, he said.

Meanwhile, the body of the soldier has been handed over to the Pakistani authorities during a flag meeting in Laam Sector on Friday.

The deceased will be laid to rest with full military honour in his native town on Saturday, ISPR sources told the media.

The Pakistani foreign office also condemned the killing, saying that it "goes against the understanding reached between Pakistan and India on speedy return of inadvertent line crossers," and that the incident had "the potential to further vitiate the atmosphere."

"Pakistan calls upon the Government of India to carry out a thorough investigation into this unfortunate incident and to ensure that such incidents do not recur," it said in a statement released Friday evening.

Meanwhile, an Indian army spokesman claimed the Pakistani soldier had been killed in a firefight in which one Indian soldier was also wounded.

"We detected some suspicious movement yesterday near the LoC (Line of Control) inside our territory and the challengers from our side fired and in the ensuing firefight he was killed," said Lieutenant Colonel Rajesh Kalia, a spokesman for the Indian army's northern command.

"At that time we did not know he was a Pakistani soldier. We killed an infiltrator," the spokesman added.

Kalia said India expected to return the body to Pakistani authorities later in the day.

The incident is the first fatal exchange between troops in the region since the two armies agreed a ceasefire on January 16.

A flare-up along the LoC in early January saw a total of five soldiers killed, three from Pakistan and two from India.

The Indian government expressed outrage after it said one of its soldiers was beheaded although the Pakistan Army denied responsibility for the decapitation.

Cross-border trade and transport links were also suspended for several weeks although they have since resumed.

This act was done by Non-State actors to derail the Peace Process between India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The intention was to nullify the goodwill and peace achieved between the two nations by Aman ki Asha.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has Bigger Heart than some Petty Non-State Actors according to Pakistanis:

Pakistanis have a bigger heart: Afridi, News - Cricket - Mumbai Mirror

For the sake of Regional Stability and Greater Peace of Humanity, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan should grant MFN Status to India tomorrow to show it has not bowed down to Terror.

Islamic Republic of Pakistan should increase Trade between the 2 nations, so that business interests do not allow any escalation to Nuclear War thereby ensuring Safety of Millions of Lives across the Borders thus contributing to Greater Peace.

Did the Pak soldier accidentally come in or was it 'accidental'?

As accidental as the time when he entered India and beheaded the soldiers?

I am sure if this soldier had succeeded in whatever he was assigned to do, the world would be told that it was the act of terrorists!

From Pakistan's perspectives the killing was protested but understood given that its the LoC, such accidental crossings usually mean paying with your life.. Until of course there was a news that there was some to and fro chatter between the Indians and Ikhlaq before he was shot down. Now this opens the stage to a lot more questioning. Something that will NOT be understood.

Let's hope this doesn't lead to any more cyclic violence.
