Pakistan will not accept India as UNSC permanent member: Nawaz - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan made it clear to the United States on Thursday it would not accept India as a permanent member of United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed these reservations while speaking with US President Barack Obama on the phone, the PM House said in a statement.

The prime minister said India cannot become a UNSC permanent member due to its non-compliance of all the resolutions passed by UN regarding Kashmir, added the spokesman.

The US president called Nawaz in the evening where both the leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and those related to regional stability and peace for over half-an-hour, said the statement.

The spokesman said the prime minister made it clear upon the US president that permanent slot for India at the UNSC will not be tolerated at any cost as India has not fulfilled any resolution passed by UN aimed at assuring the right of self determination for the people of Kashmir.
hasnt he read the survey done in PoK that most people in PoK wants to be with India?
Pakistan has not kept any of its promise on fighting against terrorism.

"India is by no means eligible to become a permanent member of UN," the prime minister was quoted as saying. Nawaz also conveyed Pakistan's desire to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The nuclear network of A.Q. Khan: A hero at home, a villain abroad | The Economist
COMPACT in design, efficient in operation and capable of inflicting immense destruction over long distances. There is something truly spine-chilling about the sophistication of the wares displayed in a build-it-yourself bomb catalogue that was apparently shared with members of an international nuclear smuggling ring by a Pakistani scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan. The quality of the goods on sale, it now appears, was every bit as alarming as the geographical scope of his network.

:D
When Pakistan is member of Nuclear Suppliers group..International community will rename it to AQ Khan Supplier group.

UNSC membership, if and when it comes for India will be the official death of the non-existent Indo-Pak parity that the Pakis wish to cling onto to perhaps still justify the demand for a separate state or whatever else delusions they suffer from.

I wonder when this happens, will the Pakis quit in protest and form their own Islamic UN? :pound:

Guys try to look at this issue from paki perspective :

This is their last chance to make noise on Kashmir issue ... Do keep in mind Kashmir is #1 thing which every paki thinks, #1 thing in their foreign policy, #1 thing that unites their fragmented society, their entire history revolves around Kashmir , Kashmir is the most important weapon in their anti-India propaganda ...

Think what would happen if India joins UNSC as permanent member ??
India can block any resolution on Kashmir, can also veto any pro-Pakistan or anti India bill ...

I really feel bad for them ..
I am crying :(:(

China Should Back India for a Permanent UN Security Council Seat

On Thursday, multiple Indian media outlets were abuzz with the 'story' that the Chinese government had stated that it had no objections to India and Brazil joining the United Nations Security Council as permanent members. While this story was, in fact, not true, and an exaggeration, the recent Chinese position is that India should play a greater role at the United Nations. This position was articulated at a recent meeting between the Chinese, Russian, and Indian foreign ministers in China.

Despite the lack of explicit Chinese support for an Indian bid to join the UNSC as a permanent member, India should make the most of China's favorable position to press China to support its bid. India and China often vote together at international forums despite their bilateral differences and border disputes. Moreover, an India on the UNSC would provide a neutral and independent counterweight to other powers, and would help usher in a more multipolar world, as many Chinese analysts wish for. Despite being a liberal democracy, India has supported Russia and China on issues of non-interference in the affairs of other states and would help balance the UNSC away from the Western bloc.

China would be more favorable towards an Indian bid or a larger Indian and Brazilian role at the U.N. than the bids of Japan and Germany. Japan and Germany, along with Brazil and India form the G4 nations grouping, an informal agreement among the four nations to support each other's bids to join the Security Council. However, their bids are all opposed by regional rivals, such as Pakistan for India's bid, and Argentina for Brazil's bid.

India and Brazil have long had the strongest bids, due to their sizes, populations, economies, and the fact that their regions (South Asia and Latin America) are unrepresented as Security Council permanent members. India's bid in particular is strong as it only faces significant opposition from Pakistan and some misgivings on the part of China. Brazil, on the other hand, faces opposition from other Latin American countries like Mexico and Argentina. Japan, in particular, has faced the opposition of its neighbors including China and both the Koreas. It is highly unlikely that Japan will join the Security Council as a permanent member anytime soon due to China's ability to veto such a proposal. Furthermore, as the recent Japanese hostage debacle in Syria has demonstrated, Japan is simply not ready to wield the diplomatic and military clout that comes with being a permanent member of the Security Council.

India, on the other hand, has the best chance of joining the Security Council. Whenever and however this proposal is made to India, India should accept it, even it if means joining the Security Council without the other G4 countries. That would be in India's long term interest and worth any short-term animosity with the other G4 powers, which would be brief at most. Indeed, China had previously implied that it would support India's bid if it were de-linked from Japan's bid. India is one of the largest contributors to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces and as of 2014, had the second largest troop contribution to peacekeeping missions.

In order to attain a permanent seat, India would need the support of all five of the current permanent members. The United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France have all said that they support India's bid. With the notable exception of Pakistan (as to be expected), many U.N states would be unopposed to India's bid. Some states, however, remain wary of the overall reform this would require to the U.N. system. India should convince China that its presence on the U.N. Security Council is not only vital to India's long term interests but to China's as well. An agreement with China should then be quickly translated into an actual position at the Security Council, regardless of the bids of Brazil, Germany, Japan, or a member from Africa or the Arab world.

UNSC permanent is one kind of reassurance and trump card for India's territorial integrity.

UNSC permanent membership is very crucial for India. There are positives and negatives associated with countries. India ticks in most of the criteria to get the UNSC permanent seat. As a country India's positives out weigh negatives, add to that the promise with which India comes and takes a positive role on world stage.

Regarding Kashmir, Kashmiri people voted in large percentage in elections. They are ruling themselves under the umbrella of Indian democracy. Every one knows how Kashmir used to be a tourist attraction and a peaceful land before Pakistan started meddling in Indian state. Indian democracy can/will find the solution for Kashmiri issues in a democratic way, acceptable to the world. Pakistan need not have to worry about a princely state which joined India officially because of aggressive invasion of Pakistani armed forces.

I agree with you sir,:peace:

Ok, guys, don't get too exited.
India or any other country won't get a permanent seat in UNSC because P5 doesn't like any single country to join them, not to mention 4 countries.
Yes, Pakistan's objection is important to P5. This gives P5 one more excuse to veto any UN reform which may impair their power.

Washington: US President Barack Obama endorses India's candidature as a permanent member of the reformed UN Security Council, the White House has said. "As it relates to India's membership in the security council, I know the President endorsed that...The Security Council in the context of a variety of other important reforms to the operations of the United Nations," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. Earnest said he had no updates on the status of the ongoing reforms of the UN or efforts to try to bring about some of those reforms.
During his India visit last month, Obama had reaffirmed his support for a reformed UN Security Council with India as a permanent member. "I can say today in the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as a permanent member," Obama had said in his speech in Parliament.

If Pakistan can control what the UNSC consists of, and P5 need Pakistan to protect their cosy position it shows how useless a club the UNSC is and how desperate the P5 are - especially Poodlestan and China.

I think if and when the UNSC expands, there will be a dilution of powers of individual States. The existing members are smart enough to make it happen in self interest.
Meaning it may no longer be as simple, straightforward then for one member to veto alone, as it is today.
This serves the old members well, as they've cemented alliances in the group already and are never alone.
It will only limit how much the new ones (like India) could maneuver.

Pakistan and others protesting the Indian candidature, are only a bargaining chip for existing members.
Another ploy is to pit various candidates vehemently against each other and minimize the extent of upcoming expansion.

Regards,
Virendra

Pakistan`s stance on UNSC permanent membership is of little concern to us. We have to convince the five permanent members-US,UK,France,Russia and China to get in. Also the opinion of nations like Germany,Japan and Brazil might have some weight. IMO if we can get China to our side then we will have no problems.
