First tight gas well producing 15 million cubic feet per day of natural gas is on line at Sajawal gas field in Kirthar block in Sindh province, according to a report in Express Tribune. It is located 110 km south east of Karachi, Pakistan. It puts Pakistan in an exclusive club of just a few nations producing unconventional natural gas.

The tight gas well in Kirthar belt is being operated jointly by Poland's Polskie Gornictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo (PGNiG) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL).

The state-owned Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is buying gas from the joint venture at $6 per million BTUs (half the price agreed for Iranian gas) for distribution through its network in southern Pakistan. SSGC is laying a 52-kilometre-long pipeline at an estimated cost of Rs 325 million, carrying gas from the Suleman Range to the Nooriabad industrial estate.

First tight gas production launch in Sajawal is a very significant milestone for Pakistan. It augurs well for the future of both tight and gas production in the country because there are similarities in how both are extracted. Pakistan is endowed with huge deposits of both---105 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of shale gas and at least 33 trillion cubic feet of tight gas. In addition, Pakistan is also blessed with 9.1 billion barrels of shale oil which is also extracted in a similar way.

Pakistan's current demand for natural gas is about 1.6 trillion cubic feet per year. Even if triples to 5 trillion cubic feet per year, the current known reserves of over 150 trillion cubic feet of conventional and unconventional gas are sufficient for over 30 years.

Wells for both of these unconventional resources (tight and shale) must be "hydraulically fractured" (fracked) in order to produce commercial amounts of gas. Operator challenges and objectives to be accomplished during each phase of the Asset Life Cycle (Exploration, Appraisal, Development, Production, and Rejuvenation) of both shale gas and tight gas are similar, according to a paper on this subject. Drilling, well design, completion methods and hydraulic fracturing are somewhat similar; but formation evaluation, reservoir analysis, and some of the production techniques are quite different.

The current technology known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking was developed in the United States and it has spawned shale oil and gas revolution increasing supplies and reducing gas prices. The Chinese are now working on further cutting costs to make the equipment and technology more affordable.

Like the shale gas revolution in the United States, tight gas is transforming China's gas production - accounting for a third of total output in 2012 -- and will form the backbone of the country's push to expand so-called "unconventional" gas production nearly seven-fold by 2030, according to Reuters. The speed and size of the boom has exceeded forecasts and has been led by local firms developing low-cost technology and techniques, already being rolled out by Chinese companies in similar gas fields outside of China. Pakistan can benefit from the Chinese in its efforts to increase tight and shale gas and oil

1) Dreaming of becoming energy surplus nation on the basis of Shale reserves is stupid unless you have the technology to extract and can increase plant efficiency to an economic level.

2) Countries like India and USA with way higher reserves(5X for India) are not getting wet dreams over shale gas since it would take decades to mature the technology and there is a higher chance of breakthrough in other areas of unconventional energy production.

Half baked articles such as these are written for the sole purpose of facilitating certain nincompoops' mental ejaculation.

yes i know indian mahindra does has experience in shale gas

but in pakistan ENI as well as a polish firm is involved under JV with PPL and other pakistani firms

yes USA does has more shale oil and gas reserve than pakistan but india?
are you sure?can you post the source?

Pakistan shale gas reserve are 51tcf and india 62tcf
Pakistan is the 9th largest country by shale oil reserve while india is not even in the top 20.

Pakistan shale oil reserve by today currency terms are worth 8.4trillions dollars..

And mind it they are only discovered in sindh. Not even counting the balochistan factor.

Too hot to handle: Govt rejects shale gas price, terming it 'too much to absorb'

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Italy's Eni have calculated that the price of shale gas should be $14 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), which has been rejected by the government as too much for the country's existing tariff regime to absorb, an official told The Express Tribune.
The price was determined on the basis of expenditure required to drill for hard-to-reach shale gas reservoirs following a rise in interest in tapping this potential on the back of reports that Pakistan has massive reserves.
"There has to be a steady transition from conventional gas to tight and then finally to shale gas," said Moin Raza Khan, Deputy Managing Director of PPL and head of its exploration operation. "This has to be a slow process because of the economics involved in the operations."

Why do you suppose PGNiG is involved in the extraction? They must be expecting to make a profit.

Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo SA has commenced production of natural gas from two wells in the Rehman field, located in the Kirhtar licence area in Pakistan.

At present, both production and sales have reached 295 cubic metres per minute. The gas is being fed to the Pakistani transmission system. Initially, during test production, the wells will provide around 100 million cubic metres of gas per year. Test production is scheduled to continue for 22 months.

Natural gas resources in the Kirthar licence area have been estimated at approximately 12bn cubic metres. PGNiG's interest in the licence is 70%, with Pakistan Petroleum Ltd holding the remaining 30%. The Kirthar licence, which was acquired in 2005, is located in southern Pakistan, in the western part of the Sindh province.

The field's entire output will be purchased by the Pakistani authorities. After Norway, Pakistan is the second country in which PGNiG has launched production from its own fields.

Umm...No.

Indian shale gas reserves are 500+ tcl. With about 50% being recoverable.

Good luck extracting shale gas with current technology(at Pakistan's disposal). :)

This is most likely a testing/researching stage considering that the production is this low. This is just the test period. From the article,

Initially, during test production, the wells will provide around 100 million cubic metres of gas per year. Test production is scheduled to continue for 22 months.

Please post the news about 500+ tcf reserves in india.
meanwhile i can post a link of pakistani firm claiming that pakistan has 214tcf of shale gas reserves.

but i would rather go by neutral sources.
which confirms pak shale gas reserve by 51tcf and india 62tcf,

And PAkistan already has started extracting shale gas from 2 sites with the help of foriegn firms..read the above news

This is not a dick measuring contest, read the article, it's not a reporter or a blogger's opinion. It is what the scientists at NGRI say.I'll take their opinion at face value any day.

And how much does of your total energy consumption does shale gas feed? Enough to make you an energy surplus nation?

I am not saying Pakistan should not explore this avenue, all I am saying is that the technology needs to mature before it can provide dividends and that article by Riaz Haq is half baked BS like the rest of his articles are.

read this..where it is said that they are discovered?

India only has confirmed 62tcf of shale gas reserves.while other sites alsoc laim less than 40tcf.

Scientists identify 28 basins where production can start in five years; exploration policy expected in two years.

In January last year, the US Energy Information Administration estimated that India held 38 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves.

That was good enough for the needs of the nation for 29 years, it was said.

What if that figure was upped to a fantastic 527 trillion cubic feet?
Yes, 527 trillion cubic feet of gas, of which 50%, or over 260 tcf, were recoverable?

i just want to know the water situation in pakistan.
off topic but i want to know the water scenario in pakistan in terms of-
underground water level
open water bodies
dependence of locals on underground water bodies
dependence of farmers on the water bodies near the shale gas oil fields.

the fracking process leads to lots of contamination of water apart from requiring the huge quantity of water to undertake the fracking itself, in usa water is abundant and population is distant from the oil field. In India the reverse case persist and thats why Indian Govt is cautious in exploiting it else the three regions are up for auctioning for shale gas extraction as of today(of the 6 zones identified for primary harnessing)

How much can Pakis extract in real??? Just mentioning we got Zillion barrel/sqft of oil/gas doesnt mean anything unless it's extracted.

Pakis are always in dreams.
