Polio cases multiply despite travel curbs

ISLAMABAD: Three new cases of polio virus type-1 reported from the tribal regions were tested positive on Monday, raising the number of cases so far this year to 66. Of the cases emerging from Fata this year, none received any dose of the oral polio vaccine (OPV), a failure the prime minister's focal person on polio has described as a 'wake-up call'.
Of the new cases, two are from North Waziristan and one is from the neighbouring South Waziristan, according to a press statement issued by the Prime Minister's Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell. Twenty-two-month-old Waqas, son of Miramshah resident Wali Muhammad and six-month-old Afsa Bibi, daughter of Miramshah resident Powneer are the latest victims of the crippling disease in North Waziristan.
In South Waziristan, 22-month-old Romana from Wana was tested positive for poliovirus. With these results, the total count of polio cases reported so far this year from South Waziristan stands at five, with North Waziristan at an alarming 44.
"It is very sad to see the continuous outbreak of polio in these areas which are inaccessible; every case which is reported from these areas bothers me a lot," PM's focal Person on Polio Ayesha Raza Farooq said. "However, every case of polio is a wake-up call for the community to start demanding the vaccine to secure the future of their children," she added.
A two-day World Health Assembly session on polio interventions is scheduled for May 22 and May 23 in Geneva, where Ayesha is set to represent Pakistan. She said all-out efforts will be made to inform the international community that Pakistan is fully committed to eradicating polio from the country.
She will accompany Minister for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination (NHSRC) Saira Afzal Tarar. Ayesha is determined to inform the international community that Pakistan is serious in effectively implementing travel restrictions and will share its plans to battle the scourge.
She said that on the directions of Nawaz Sharif, all provincial chief ministers have been directed to improve the quality of polio campaigns in their specific provinces.
"The provinces should not slow down their efforts to fight against polio," she said.

To those trolls who are celebrating the misery of a.crippling desease like Polio I will only say that Karma is a bitch. Make fun of struggling nations and you will be hit with bigger problems.

Remember the outbreak of Pest in India a.decade or so.ago? Passengers upon arrival in Europe were sprayed with.pesticides like cockroaches before disembarking.

Be thankful to God that India is Polio free and count your blessing instead of acting like a retatd celebrating human misery elsewhere.

We are not mocking misery you are, read below

Fake vaccination: In hunt for certification, polio drops 'optional' – The Express Tribune

Now it defeats the need for furnishing certificates. Then again if world becomes stricter, you shall cry discrimination.

You have made it a joke.

Actually its the other way around of "Karma".

You spread terror all over the world specially to India and now crippled with Polio. You destroyed generations and now you get it back.

You wanted others to bleed with 1000 cuts but today Pakis has 1000 cuts and bleeding... we have the right to laugh at you terrorists.

Allah is teaching you a lesson but you jahil paki kaum don't want to understand.

Read my.message again, I refer to mockery and cheap shots made here in this forum.
I agree with you, but better restrict it to forum than what you are doing on ground.

Anyways USA too pledged never to use vaccination drive for CIA operation.

But when your flocks change. Educated globe trotters are using fake certificates. Do they believe in the impotency theory?

Don't you know how hard we had to fight to achieve the status of Polio free nation?

How do you comprehend if India is infected again because of fake certificate? Won't it become a bitter joke towards us?

To understand the dynamics one has to look and approach the desease
from the local perspective. The epicenter is based in the tribal belt known for its close and orthodox society. They are backward and superstitious people who are even affaid to tell the exact count of their family members and specially children out of fear of 'nazar'. Polio workers are often threatened and even abused by locala.

Dr Afridis face vaccination compagne.didn't help us either. Whatever trust we had gained from local tribes was tranished by this fake campaigne which resulted in.the death of Bin lAden, a guy considered hero by most in the tribal belt.

Now the.governent is trting.to create.a quarantaine around FATA and giving drios to everyone travellin outside and.this is the only.way.to curb it ay short term,
New revolutionary and more.orthodoxp methods are required to fforce these people to vaccinate their children.l

On another thread you asked whether I was smart or not, remember? and this is the level of intelligence you demonstrate. Nobody here is celebrating human misery. What we are mocking is the utter helplessness of the Pakistani administrative machinery in combating this disease.

and, don't compare what happened a decade ago to what happens now. What's wrong with you?

It might be a good idea not to spread this message in Pakistan. If polio has been eradicated in India and we give credit to God, then how come that God is not doing the same in Pakistan? What have Pakistanis done wrong?

Fact is it is not an act if God. Polio was eradicated by hard work. It is because God is being brought into the picture that Polio remains endemic in Pakistan. After all I think Pakistanis know that Polic drops are a kafir plot to make Muslims infertile.

Being a Paki doing international travel must be fun.

First they put something down your mouth as you leave Pakistan. Then they stick something up your backside when you reach your destination to check that you have no hidden bombs or drugs.

Pak Asks EU to Relax Travel Restrictions

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has asked the Europea Union (EU) to relax travel restrictions imposed on it due to the increasing polio cases in the country. The issue of restrictions came up for discussion yesterday during a meeting of a German parliamentary delegation with President Mamnoon Hussain. Hussain called for relaxing the restrictions and said that international community should be considerate and help Pakistan to work towards eradication of polio virus, Dawn reported. Hussain told German parliamentarians that Pakistan is committed to eradicating polio. The president said the main cause of the increase in the number of polio cases in recent years was terrorism because of which many tribal areas in the country were still inaccessible. Pakistan has asked the 28- member European Union to relax travel restrictions imposed on it, the report said. "Pakistan is not responsible for the situation, but the elements who caused the spread of terrorism in the region," he said. He assured the delegation that Pakistan was committed to eradicating the disease and the situation was now improving. The president also informed the delegation that the government was taking effective measures to curb terrorism, violation of human rights, discrimination against minorities and gender inequality. The delegation is headed by Dagmar G Wohrl, MP and Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. Pakistan faced international humiliation when the World Health Organisation (WHO) imposed travel restrictions on the country last year for failure to curb the polio virus.
