Because bureacracy in India is preventing exploration and mining.
We also need to safeguard our eco system. Our major mines are in the NE which hilly and green. What is the point of clean energy when we are going to destroy the environment? Major Uranium exporters like Australia and Kazakstan have their uranium mines over barren uninhabited lands and thus would have lower impact on the eco system. Therefore, getting Aussie approval becomes even more important. They are one of the few countries where the environmentalist would not be crying over the impact of mining on the environment.

Just as I said in my first post. They've now resorted to their blackmail when Australia made it clear exporting to India would in no way give Pakistan any go-ahead. Just as we predicted - their feeble "piggybacking" atttempt didnt work - now they've resorted to their usual barbarian nuclear blackmail stance.

Read Pakistan's response when Australia told them to shoo-off. Note - he's conveniently avoided mentioning any Paki nuclear proliferation history when proudly proclaiming "all these deals are discriminatory against Pak!!". Of COURSE they're discrimiantory!! You're representing the ONLY country which sold nukes in the black market!! Would anyone give nuke tech to a nation (THE only nation on the planet) thats accused of selling nuke tech ?? NUKE tech - a technology which in the wrong hands can kill millions!! PAkistan is a seriously demented nation!!!

Pakistan wary over Australia-India manoeuvres
Pakistan's top diplomat in Australia has warned that any uranium sales to India may be seen by Islamabad as boosting its rival's nuclear capability.

The high commissioner, Abdul Malik Abdullah, said that whatever the Australian government decides will be fine with his country, provided it does not discriminate against Pakistan.
"We hope that it will be a fair and non-discriminatory decision," Mr Abdullah told Radio Australa's Connect Asia program.

"Like India, Pakistan is also not a signatory of NPT (nuclear non-proliferation treaty), and in the past there have been some instances where in the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in other matters some decisions were taken which were totally discriminatory against Pakistan.
"So we hope whatever decision is taken would be fair based on equity, and non-discriminatory."
Mr Abdullah was asked about concern in some quarters that selling uranium to india could stoke the arms race between the two Asian powers.
The envoy said: "To some extent they're right. After this (2008) treaty between (the) US and India, we feel this Indian nuclear program has already been given a boost.

"And Pakistan unfortunately was not offered similar facility a few years ago, and it is hoped that Pakistan's concern in this regard will be kept in mind."
The US Congress approved an agreement facilitating nuclear cooperation between the United States and India.

Will Pakistan also seek to buy uranium from Australia?
The commissioner said: "We haven't thought this - to buy uranium from Australia - as yet, but of course in the future the possibility remains there."
Mr Abdullah said his government did not think an Australian pro-sales decision "will impact in any negative way on Pakistan-Australia relations".
"Our relations are based on a very firm footing. But as I already said, it is hoped that our Australian friends will keep our concerns in view while taking any decision in this regard."

Oz minister backs India uranium deal, says no to Pakistan
Melbourne/New Delhi, (IANS) Backing the ruling Labour Party's decision to export uranium to India, Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith Tuesday rejected a similar deal for Pakistan and said he looked forward to his visit to India that will focus on expanding maritime security between the two countries.

"India brought itself under the governance of the international nuclear regulators, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Suppliers Group," Smith said, hours before leaving for New Delhi.
"That has not occurred with Pakistan. There has never been a suggestion of (nuclear) proliferation from India," he said amid Islamabad's assertion that Canberra should export uranium to Islamabad as New Delhi has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"Regrettably, over preceding years, there have been serious concerns about proliferation from Pakistan," he said

This is the first ministerial visit from Australia since the Labor government reversed its ban on uranium exports to India.

Smith underlined that the uranium export decision reflected India's global standing, and predicted it would become "one of the world's three great powers", along with the US and China.
Smith hoped that Pakistan would understand the decision and stressed that it would not affect military ties between the two nations.
"Pakistan would understand the decision and that it would not affect military ties between the two nations, especially in cooperation in the war in Afghanistan," he said.

"I don't see this decision as having an adverse outcome, so far as the Australia-Pakistan relationship is concerned."
"Nor do I see it in any way as being relevant to suitability in South Asia. We have a very good military-to-military and defence-to-defence relationship with Pakistan," he said.

In New Delhi, Smith will hold wide-ranging talks with his Indian counterpart A.K. Antony. He will also meet the Indian service chiefs and other senior political leaders.
In Mumbai, he will visit the Western Naval Command and address the Asia Society India Centre on building the strategic partnership between Australia and India.
In a statement before leaving for India, Smith said his talks will "take forward our shared strategic and security interests, including maritime security, cooperation in the Indian Ocean, and regional security."

"I will discuss opportunities to expand defence cooperation activities that build on the 2009 joint declaration on security cooperation," he said.

Under the declaration, Australia and India affirmed their shared desire to promote regional and global security, as well as their common commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
India is the current chair and Australia the vice chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC)
Smith's visit takes place days after after India snubbed a proposal attributed to Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, but was later denied by him, for a trilateral security pact between the US, Australia and India. The talks in New Delhi will help clear the air over this issue.

^^ That ought to shut the PAkistanis up.Lets see the history of Pakistanis attempting to Piggy Back / Hijack India on major Nuclear developments/Treaties in a chronological order.

India explodes 5 Nuclear bombs ( 11 - 13 May 1998 ).
Pakistan follows India (note : They didn't have the balls to test it. India testing was the perfect excuse. Everything else was secondary)
Result : India accorded a responsible de-facto Nuclear State. Pakistan still considered a rogue Nuclear nation under threat from Islamist takeover and all attempts are made to rebuke or demolarize Pakistani nuclear establishment

India gets NSG waiver (Sep 4-6, 2008 )
Pakistan whines it too should get waiver.NSG politely tells Pakistan : Remember AQ Khan? Also tells pakistan - You have only two Civil Nuclear reactors. Rest are millitary. No way Vis Pakistan even registered as a potential for NSG waiver.Result : VPakistani attempt to Piggyback India fails.

India-US signs Landmark (October 1, 2008 )
Pakistan whines it too Should get similar treatment. Foreign minister makes a veiled threat about nuclear arms race (read: China helps Pak).
US tells Pakistan - Remember AQ Khan? US tells Pakistan - your nukes aren't safe. Rejects Pakisani request (Pakistan is a major non-NATO US ally)
Result : Pakistani attempt to Piggyback India fails.

India gets Australia Uranium(November 2011)
Pakistan whines it too should get Uranium (Foreign minister states : AQ khan was a long time ago. That is history).
Australia tells Pakistan : Selling nuclear tech in black Market isn't like smuggling small or heavy arms. Nuclear tech can annihilate the planet if it falls into the wrong hands. Selling nuclear tech is sign of great irresponsiblity and Pakistan is the only nation amongst 8 which has this ignoble distinction!!!
Result : Pakistani attempt to Piggyback India fails.
