ISLAMABAD: Pakistani has hiked its defence outlay by Rs 110 billion over the budgeted allocation of Rs 442 billion for major military operations against the Taliban in the volatile tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

The changes, listed in a "country paper" presented by the government to the International Monetary Fund, include a reduction in the allocation for development by Rs 73 billion.

The allocations for military have been made while outlays on the development and non-development budgets have been slashed by 50% and 20% respectively to create fiscal space for rehabilitating the flood-affected population. The changes were made even before the first quarter of the current fiscal year has ended. The projected defence expenditure has been increased to Rs 552 billion from the Rs 442.2 billion in the 2010-11 budget approved by parliament . Chief military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas said: "The increase in defence budget is not in my knowledge and matters related to military operations cannot be disclosed."

For Pakistan national security has always been more important than social security.

Rant start:angry_6:

Why the hell did India gave 25 million or whatever to Pakistan for flood aid? These days there is a race going on between India and Pakistan who is more pathetic. Instead of helping their flood victims dumba$$es are spending whatever they have on killing their own countrymen and in India's case CWG loot is for everybody to see.

Rant over:angry_10:

Pakistan is using the flood relief funds to equip their army, navy and airforce to attack INDIA. U.S. should stop giving funds to Pakistan.:emot154:

you guys are unnecessarily blaming them it's just a typo:emot15::emot15:

Money and the military – The Express Tribune

What is especially disturbing is the clandestine manner in which the changes have been made. Senior officials at the finance ministry suggested a typographical error may have been responsible, and they knew nothing about it. The military spokesman has also said this is not in his knowledge. Reports however state the increase may be intended to fund a major operation in the tribal areas.
