Pakistani Navy Signs For Two More Frigate Type 054A
GEOPOLITICS , SEA

The Pakistan Navy was asked to acquire four additional F-22P frigates after the fourth in the series, PNS Aslat , was launched in June 2011 at the Karachi Shipyard, while the first three were all built in China in Shanghai. But the choice of the naval forces of Pakistan is finally focused on the Type 054A, the multi-role frigate of the Chinese navy whose production is about to end after a series of 30 ships.

According to the Pakistan Navy (PN) Twitter account dated June 1, an acquisition contract for two Type 054A frigates was signed with Pakistan's Ministry of Defense Production (MoD-P) in Rawalpindi. Chinese Export Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd (CSTC), in the presence of Vice Admiral Faisal Rasul Lodhi, Deputy Chief of Staff of the PN, as well as several senior Chinese military and industrial leaders.

The text indicates that the Pakistan Navy should receive the four vessels in its fleets by 2021 , and that these will significantly improve its combat capabilities, while effectively contributing to maritime security operations in the region. There is every reason to believe that another agreement had already been contracted before, and that this new signature would consist of an additional order.

This confirms what a Pakistani frigate commander said last year about the purchase of Type 054A.

Designed by the CSIC Group 701 Institute, the frigate Type 054A has the primary mission "anti-submarine fleet control" as mentioned in the specifications of the staff of the Chinese Navy. The 3,600-ton (standard) building is therefore equipped with a number of weapon systems for this function, such as Type 183 acoustic control systems, Type 562 anti-torpedo control, Type hull sonar. 307 and Type 206 Trailer Sonar (updated to Type 311 later), Yu-7 torpedo launcher, WHH-003A anti-submarine rocket, and YU anti-submarine missiles. 8.

The ship is also equipped with eight YJ-83J anti-ship missiles, one H / PJ-26 76mm caliber gun, two CIWS H / PJ-12 systems (updated to H / PJ-11 from the 17th of series), as well as a 32-silo vertical launch system capable of launching both the HQ-16 anti-aircraft missiles and the ASROC Yu-8.

Since admission to the active service of the 1st vessel in January 2008, 10 years ago, a total of 26 Type 054A frigates have already joined the Chinese naval forces and they are actively conducting offshore missions from Bohai Bay to Gulf of Aden, passing through the western Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. Today 4 copies are still construction or arrangement at the shipyard Hudong in Shanghai and Huangpu in Guangzhou, and will soon see his successors the Type 054B electric propulsion.

For the moment, the price of the four future Type 054As for the Pakistan Navy is unknown, but the older, smaller F-22Ps each cost about US $ 200 million in Pakistan and the Chinese Navy is acquiring Type 054A at the price of 218 million USD (approximately 187 M €).

At the level of the equipment on board, it is almost certain that all the systems used by the Chinese Navy will be replaced by exportable, potentially demoted or at least modified versions. Thus, the HQ-16 or HQ-16C could leave their place to the LN-80, the H / PJ-11 to the Type 730B, the Yu-8 to the ET80 ... etc, and not to mention the combat systems and sensors .

Despite this, the four new Type 054As are expected to be one of the most important pivots for Pakistan's surface fleets, and could work alongside future S20 submarines of Chinese origin for various missions as well.

For China, the increasing endowment of Chinese military equipment by Pakistan will continue to deepen the political-military relationship between the two countries, and will further consolidate the Chinese position in this crucial part for its maritime silk route. .

To be continued.

Annex: the text of the statement of the Pakistan Navy

Contract for acquisition of 2 x warships for Pakistan Navy was signed with M / s China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd. (CSTC), Ministry of Defense Production, Rawalpindi. Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), Rear Admiral Rasul Lodhi Faisal was also present on the occasion.

With the conclusion of this contract, the Navy will have a total of 4 x Type 054A ships in its Fleet by 2021. The induction of these Ships will substantially enhance Pakistan navy's war fighting capabilities while effectively contributing to Maritime Security Operations in the region.

Type 054A is an extremely potent and state of the art warship equipped with latest weapons range missiles and Hi-tech sensors, capable to undertake operations in all areas of naval warfare. The acquisition of these modern ships is certainly a value added in Pakistan Navy which is an ardent defender of the National Maritime Interests of Pakistan.

The ceremony was attended by high ranking officials and dignitaries from China, Pakistan Navy and Government authorities.

Instead of wasting money on F-22p , they should have gone for this in the first place. F-22 is just a glorified patrol boat.

Pakistan Navy to host multinational Naval Exercise Aman 2019 in February

Islamabad: The Pakistan Navy is set to host multi-national naval exercise ‘Aman 2019’ in February in the North Arabian Sea.

More than 40 countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, China, Turkey, Japan, Russia, UK and US will take part in the 6th exercise of the naval series held every two years.

“Aman 2019 exercise with the resolve of ‘Unity for Peace’ aims at boosting the joint operational capabilities of the participating countries’ naval forces for peace and stability in the region,” according to a Pakistan Navy (PN) spokesperson. The international naval exercise is also a “manifestation of Pakistan’s commitment in promoting peace and stability in the region through harmony and collaboration.”

The idea behind exercise Aman (Urdu word for ‘peace’), which started in 2007, is to identify areas of common interest for participating countries and a shared understanding of maritime security operations, counter terrorism operations as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

The exercise, to be followed by an international maritime conference, aims to safeguard and promote regional peace, display united resolve against maritime terrorism and crimes as well as enhancing readiness and interoperability between allies.

To participate in pre-exercise activities, two Japanese Naval P3C aircraft of Deployed Maritime Force for Anti-Piracy Enforcement (DAPE) have arrived at PNS Mehran in Karachi. The visiting Japanese aircrew participated in various activities, including Search & Rescue (SAR) and Counter Piracy (CP) Exercises, along with Pakistan Navy team.

The visit by Japanese aircraft and crew reflects “a strong mutual desire to improve the level of coordination and interoperability at the operational and tactical level” according to a statement by PN. The arrival of Japanese aircraft was termed “a hallmark of maritime partnership between Pakistan Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force” which would further foster navy-to-navy relations as well as diplomatic and military ties between the two countries.

Earlier this week, Pakistan’s Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi visited Bahrain and Jordan to enhance naval partnerships. On January 23, Admiral Zafar also held meetings with Commander-in-Chief Bahrain Defence Forces Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa, Commander US Naval Forces Central Command Vice Admiral James Malloy and Commander Combined Task Force 150 Commodore Darren Garnier of Royal Canadian Navy in Bahrain to discuss defence-related collaborations.

Pakistan’s geo-strategic location, at the crossroad of world energy routes, offers the country a unique opportunity to achieve socio-economic prosperity, according to the Pakistan Navy chief. The Arabian Sea is one of the most important international trade routes and the Pakistan Navy through its initiatives and diverse activities has emerged as a key player in the region’s collaborative maritime security paradigm.

Objectives of Aman 2019

• Display of united resolve against maritime terrorism and crimes.

• Contribute towards regional peace and stability.

• Enhancing interoperability between regional and extra regional navies
