Pak is a country in slow meltdown: US expert

From Lalit K Jha
Washington, Aug 3 (PTI) Pakistan is a country which is in a slow meltdown, an eminent American expert has told lawmakers, a development which she argued would be extraordinarily bad for the region and for the United States.

"It''s a country in a meltdown, or a slow meltdown, if you would, like crumbling. And of course the consequences of a more fundamental crumbling in Pakistan beyond FATA but in Punjab would be extraordinarily bad for the region and for the United States," said Vanda Felbab-Brown, a fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the prestigious Brookings Institute yesterday.

Testifying before House Committee on Armed Services, Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Felbab-Brown said that she is saying this despite being well aware of the "game" being played by Pakistan.

"We need to be very conscious of carefully calculating what benefits we would get out of more aggressive, more visible actions on the Pakistani side with respect to the Afghan environment, with what kind of precipitating triggers in Pakistan that could generate -- and I am well aware of the game that Pakistan plays with us, that is, if you push too aggressively, we are too fragile and we will collapse, and so we feel a great deal of restraint," she said.

The eminent American expert said that Pakistan is extremely fragile and there are very few trends that are going right in the country.

"So, unfortunately, we are stuck with treading very carefully across the Durand Line and more broadly in Pakistan," Felbab-Brown said.

But their nucs are not going to melt.... India or USA will have to take control of those nucs.

The only thing for India is that India would no longer be bound by IWT and draw water from rivers emanating from J&K to irrigate entire Rajstan and MP.

Punjabies, the rouges , would like to merge with India with Punjabies and the nucs. In 1935 elections it the Congress which had won in todays West Ounjab rather than Muslim Leaugue. Tariq Ali's grand father won from Congress.

That is scary. Even Sindhies would like to merge with India. Frontier province was always with India.

Not anymore. Never heard of Great Khan's legacy in FATA in today's terms. Nor do we know anything about Sindh Nationalist's feelings towards India.

The US has to realize the benefits of a broken down Pakistan far outweighs its current boundaries.

Unfortunately india does not play a proactive role in doing so.

Sindhis have now realized and being with pakistan since 1947 has been a worst time and horrible experience indeed. We sindhis now want a separate country of our own. We were an independent country before british rule and we will choose to be separate country in case pakistan is gone.

Pakistan has no condition to go on the rivalry against India as being a mere rural economy that lives of exporting cotton and rice. The growing costs of conflict will break it soon or later. Only is possible keep a strong army spending a lot of its budget on defence, which harms its investments on education, a basic condition for economic development today.

If India force a bit more the costs of conflicts on Kashmir, Balochistan, Sindh, it may accelerate this Paki meltdown process.

See this report on Pak's state of union. The author is optimistic toward the Pak future. He believes Pakistan can to stay united if it democratize itself. But, anyway it is interesting. He criticizes US policy for Pak also.

this we all have known for quite some time now - so sorry teh article doesnt really say anything

future articles "predicting" the same will be of little value

what WOULD be of value is a time frame - would any be knowledgeable enough to extrapolate such ? btw i'm disqualifying myself !

Time frame is , I think, closely connected with events in Afghanistan and what Western and US oil companies decide.... For them every thing is dispensable in order to maintain their stronghold over energy resources..
