The Indian Army is confronting the biggest infiltration bid since Kargil, near the LoC in Keran Sector of Kupwara district in the Kashmir Valley since 23rd of September.
The big question here is, how did 30 to 40 militants manage to cross the LoC and enter Indian territory?
As per the army sources, in the initial stage the army also got confused as the area is used by bakerwals to graze goats and sheep during summer. In the first look it was assumed by the nearby army check point that these infiltrators were actually nakerwals looking for their animals.
However, it was on the night of September 23 that an Army jawan on one of the posts did a random check and asked one of the supposed bakerwals who he was and what he was doing there. Asked about his whereabouts, the infiltrator started indiscriminate firing on the jawan and ran out when other posts were alerted about the incident.
An Army patrol was then sent in to look into the incident. The patrol met the same kind of resistance from infiltrators, making it amply clear that these were not bakerwals. At this point it had also become clear that the number of inflitrators in Indian territory had increased over the past days.
On 24th September additional troops were rushed to area and the whole Keran sector was cordoned off on all sides.
Additional surveillance equipment was put in place, including AVMs.
Now, these infiltrators are trapped inside the cordon in a deeply forested area and are desperate to move out. However, with the Indian Army ringing them on all sides, escape seems like a bleak possibility.
It is not even clear yet whether their is any shepherd with these infiltrators or not.
Even army sources have confirmed that these infiltrators may also include Pakistan army regulars or members of Border Action Teams, as they have been intercepted asking for help from nearby Pakistani army positions.
Today, on the 10th day of the encounter, there was exchange of fire thrice but it has been observed that these infiltrators are now using their ammunition in such a manner that some divert the Indian Army's attention enabling the rest to sneak away.
