what happened to our very own TAR?i thought that finally our OFB has made a good AR(which is a hibrid of the M-16 and AK-47).so why isn't our govt. mass produce these ARs!it would be much cheaper than importing foreign made AK series AR.btw whats the current status of Trichy AR?
Importing AKs are much cheaper than construcing a plat.obtaining lcense from ishmaz etc.coz unlike other assault rifles Akms are generally cheap.akms were imported from bulgariaduring 2004-05 at a price of 6000 for fixedstock one and 6500 for flding stocked one.And there were allegations that this price could have been further lowered and we could have bought much modern ak103s at this price if ishmaz was not rejected in favor of arsenal for some confidential reasons.
plus coming to the case of reliabilit of tar there re some points which needed to be read:
The mechanism of Trichy seems to be "tilt bolt" which means that it is modification of FN FAL = Isapore 7.62x51. Just for info the FN MAG also used the same firing mechanism. It seems second attempt at making an indigenous rifle firing 7.62x39 round. The earlier attempt was A-7 which used rotating bolt similar to AK-47 or INSAS.

Normally tilt bolt is not successful with less powerful rounds and FN did not have much success with tilt bolt 5.56x45.

Trichy is a modification of Isapore rifle firing 7.62x39 round from AK compatible Mag, therefore its extraction mechanism will be like Isapore but unlike AK.

The high rate of fire can be small or a big problem depending on the changes required. Sometimes it can required massive re-design of almost every component of the firing & extracting mechanism. I wonder if OFB has access to test rigs and high speed cameras required to solve such a problem.

To add further - High rate of fire is not a good idea for assault rifle. Ideal spot is around 400 to 600 rounds per minute. Further rifles are designed to fire around 10 to 20 rounds per minute in sustained role (150-300 rounds) or around 30-50 rounds per minute for a couple of minutes.

The high rate of fire can be controlled with help of gas regulator given..

FAL & Insas both have gas regulator, Tri-AR is FAL influenced so it must have a gas regulator too..

Doesn't look like it has a gas regulator. Looks like the gas pipe is taken directly from the AK.

Also, what are those in red boxes? Nuts and bolts for harnessing the foregrip, or regulators?

The Trichy AR looks good, but I don't like the folding stock, They should instead have a stock like that on the MSMC would be more practical. Other than that, it does look pretty good, test it in all areas and quickly put it mass production.

India's small arms situation is pathetic.

Hopefully the DRDO multi cal rifle will finally solve the whole issue of 5.56 vs. 7.62, as it will be able to switch from one to the other.

The it can replace all of these:

INSAS

AK 47

FN FAL

.303 En-field

etc.
