KARACHI — One child dies every minute in Pakistan due to poor health care facilities and serious efforts are needed by the government and civil society to save lives of hundreds of thousands of kids who die early from preventable diseases.

The grim picture of child health situation was painted in the annual health report of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) for the year 2011 that was released here.

According to the report every year about 400,000 infants die in Pakistan in the first year of their life and the situation was getting worse due to the neglect on part of the government.

The report highlighted that the child mortality in Pakistan was a major cause for concern, with every one among 10 children dying before reaching the age of five and one among 30, just after birth.

It also claimed that Pakistan was among the developing nations of the world which have yet to make serious and concerted efforts for the welfare of the general public and every successive government was guilty of neglecting this vital issue.

Pneumonia and air pollution seem to be the factors affecting the health of children in Pakistan. The air pollution is mostly caused by harmful emissions of biogas, which is used in most houses in Pakistan.

"The main reason behind rising child mortality in Pakistan is lack of child healthcare facilities in rural areas, where majority of population lives. Low state spending on healthcare, abject poverty, low literacy rate, lack of skilled birth attendants, widespread communicable diseases, insufficient emergency child health services in government-run district and rural hospitals are amongst other major reasons behind growing diseases in children," the report stated.:namaste::namaste:

I wonder what the statistics is for India - and a region-wise breakup in India. It might not be very flattering for us too.

I'd suggest you stop derailing threads. This one talks about Pakistan. So keep your posts limited to Pakistan.

Pakistan sounds like a hell hole from a thousand years ago. Don't they have any natural resources or something to fund those kind of stuff? Guess they'd rather wast it on more weapons.

Let us not laugh at Pakistan while the same thing, even worse is happening in our own backyard. More than 50% of Indian women and children are malnourished. Let us bring our house in order, we can talk about others' misery later.
