Lakshmi Mittal and son will carry Olympic Torch

London: Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who is the main sponsor of the giant ArcelorMittal Orbit near the Olympics Stadium, will be among the individuals who will carry the Olympics Torch a day before the Games begin.

Olympics 2012 | Schedule | Medals Tally

The Torch will be carried by various individuals from Camden to Westminster on Thursday. Mittal's son, Aditya, 36, will also carry the Torch during the day.

The Mittal Champions Trust has been supporting Indian athletes.

Mittal, 62, said: "When I think about parallels between myself and an Olympian, I believe that success in the world of business is underpinned by very similar principles of perseverance and hard work.

"The torch relay is an excellent embodiment of all that the Olympic Games have come to symbolise - a celebration of the human spirit".

He added: "Personally to me, it represents striving to be the best in whatever we do, never giving up despite the odds and a commitment to health and fitness.

"I hope that by carrying the torch I will be representing many other people who share these ideals with me". Created by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the tallest structure in Britain.

The company, which is one of the sponsors of the Olympics, has contributed 20 million pounds towards the structure.

Located in Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, the ArcelorMittal Orbit has two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, lift and restaurant.

Visitors go up in the lift and walk down the staircase and take in the views and artistic tricks designed by Kapoor.

It is made from 60 per cent scrap metal. The Mittal Champions Trust has organised a reception for Indian athletes on Tuesday.

Athletes rated Delhi Games Village better than London: Maken

New Delhi: Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken tweeted on Tuesday that according to the Indian athletes and coaches in London that he had spoken to, the Commonwealth Games Village in New Delhi was better than the one in Stratford.

The Commonwealth Games were held in New Delhi in 2010 and every measure was put into place to ensure that the athletes were provided with world class facilities. Although some defects were highlighted, athletes from India and elsewhere had largely appreciated the effort. "Interacted w/athletes & coaches at London Olympic Village. Surprisingly everyone rated Delhi CWG Games village better than London!!!" is what Maken had to share with his followers on the micro-blogging site.

The London Games Village is located in the Olympic Park and is walking distance from some of the competition venues. It however is far from All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon which forced several tennis players including Roger Federer moving to posh residential locations around Church Road. The Village however has 3,300 apartments while the CWG Games Village had 1168 apartments and 34 residential towers.

The Delhi Games Village also had internal village shuttles and a 24-hour bus transport system. Located on the banks of river Yamuna, it had five major areas: residential zone, international zone, training zone, main dining area and operational zone. It was constructed keeping the 'Green Games' principles in mind, something that London organisers have also claimed to have kept as an objective.

Athletes on the run from moth invasion as thousands descend on Olympic site

:taunt::taunt::taunt:

They came in the dead of night, attracted by a blaze of light so vast it could be seen from miles away.

To an inquisitive moth, the Olympic village must have looked like paradise - 9,000 brand new wardrobes, each containing enough clothing to see athletes through two weeks of the Games.

Or, to put it another way, a fortnight of prime packed lunches for Tineola bisselliella and its pesky cousin pellionella.

For the Olympic park is at the centre of an area infested with fabric-chomping moths - and Stratford was pinpointed yesterday as one of the worst hit areas in the UK.

Don't even dare to imagine what might happen should they chance to munch on the women's beach volleyball bikinis.

Perish the thought that British athletes will parade proudly in uniforms that invite critics to describe our opening ceremony as moth-eaten.

And forget the fact that so much unpalatable Lycra and man-made 'performance fibres' will deter the larvae of the common clothes moth (bisselliella) or the case-bearing clothes moth (pellionella).

With this many people concentrated into such a small area, there is enough grub here for a plague of biblical proportions.

Re: Great Mr.Kalmadi off to London Olympics

This is just in

Kalmadi can go to Olympics, not opening ceremony': The Delhi High Court has allowed sacked CWG Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi to go to London for the 2012 Olympics.

However, the order comes with riders. Kalmadi has been barred from being part of the opening ceremony and for good measure the court has said that he cannot leave India before July 27.

Courts don't give a flying f*** to shame. They see the evidence (or the lack of it), and pass the judgement.

But in this case the judge was constrained to allow Kanlmadi to go, because of the weak prosecution team of CBI. However the date stipulation is the way for the Hon. Judge to give one back to Kalmadi.

Amitabh Bachchan to carry Olympic torch on Thursday

London: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will carry the London Olympic torch on Thursday, a day before the opening ceremony of the Games.

The actor will be part of the relay team which will carry the torch.

A delighted Mr Bachchan tweeted that he has been invited by the London Olympic Organizing Committee. "OK !! HERE IT IS : Have been invited by London Olympic Organizing Committee to carry the torch in the relay tomorrow," tweeted Mr Bachchan.

"Honored to be asked to carry the Olympic Torch in London at Southwark around 10:30 AM !! A proud moment for me and country!" another of his tweets said.

Mr Bachchan is not the only celebrity to lend the Indian touch to the mega gaming event. Indian music maestro AR Rahman has teamed up with his Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle to compose a track for the inaugural event.

"Clarifying the report on the Olympics track I am composing... It's a track in Punjabi celebrating the Indian influence in the UK. It's a part of a medley in the Olympics opening ceremony, according to Danny Boyle's creative wishes!," Rahman had written on his Facebook page.

Illaiyaraaja's song is also set to feature in the medley of music tracks to be used in the inaugural programme.

The 32.7 mile relay of the Olympic flame has legendary personalities from all over the world and all walks of life, including Lawrence Dallaglio, Lewis Moody, Jim Anderson, Phil Packer, Darren Fitzpatrick and Tom Davis.

Saudi judo fighter banned from wearing hijab

London: Saudi judoka Wojdan Shaherkani was on Thursday banned from wearing the hijab head scarf when she is fighting at the Olympic Games.

Olympics 2012 | Schedule | India at Olympics | Medals Tally

The 18-year-old heavyweight, part of a two-woman team sent from the conservative kingdom to an Olympics for the first time, was ordered by International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer to step onto the mat with her head uncovered.

"The Saudi Arabian athlete will take part in judo and she will fight according to the principle and spirit of judo, so without a hijab," said Vizer following the draw.

Judo applies strict safety rules and any covering on the head is deemed to present a risk to the fighter's health. Shaherkani is due to take part in the women's judo competition on August 3.

Saudi Arabia only agreed to send a women's team to London on condition that their two athletes respect a strict dress code.

The country's most senior sports official Prince Nawaf bin Faisal had told local daily Al-Jazirah the two athletes would be allowed to compete as long as they will be "wearing suitable clothing that complies with sharia."

Additionally he added other stipulations that: "the athlete's guardian agrees and attends with her," and "there must also be no mixing with men during the Games".

Men and women share the judo training venue, warm-up area in the competition hall and fight side-by-side on the various mat areas inside the competition arena.

American-raised 800m runner Sarah Attar is the second woman in the Saudi squad in London.

She has spent little time in the Islamic kingdom and grew up mostly in California, where she took up cross country running.

Attar appears without a headscarf in her official London 2012 photo.

For Shaherkani her participation is also contentious on other safety grounds as she has only been involved in the sport for two years and is not even a black belt.

That means she very likely is nowhere near the level of the international fighters she will be coming up against. She will fight Puerto Rico's Melissa Mojica, ranked 13 in the world, in the first round.
