PUNE: Ahmednagar-based Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a DRDO laboratory, has developed a detachable iron and fibre bulletproof guard, which can be used to protect vehicles used in combat situations.
"Vehicles of the armed forces and police officials could be made safer while fighting terrorists," explained Col G S Radkar, who headed the project.
He said that the urban survival kit has cage armour which can be fitted onto jeeps and battle tanks. It envelopes the vehicle and enables it to meet any kind of threat from armoured piercing or another tank while on the battlefield. The project was executed in six months. Tanks fitted with the kit were recently flagged off at a function held at VRDE.
The kit is lightweight and made with high technology and advanced armour. It can be assembled and disassembled quickly and is well protected against the weapons used by terrorists. "During the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, we saw the need to have safer vehicles to fight against terrorists. If vehicles are protected, the lives of the people inside are saved. This kit will do that job," Radkar said.
He said the kit would be evaluated for its efficacy and required improvements would be made based on feedback from user trials.
The history of VRDE dates back to 1929, with the inception of 'chief inspectorate of mechanical transport (CIMT)' at Chaklala (now in Pakistan). In 1947, the establishment was shifted to Ahmednagar and was renamed the Technical Development Establishment (Vehicles), popularly known as TDE(V). In 1965, the activities were bifurcated between research and development (R&D) and 'inspection' and two separate establishments, viz. Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) and Controllerate of Quality Assurance Vehicles (CQAV) were created.
VRDE's job is to research, design, develop and conduct technical trials and evaluation of all types of light tracked vehicles up to 25 tonne class for combat and specialist roles and all types of wheeled vehicles including transporters, trailers and various types of specialist role vehicles.
