Attacking US would be suicide, lawmaker tells N. Korea

A top US lawmaker warned North Korea Thursday that any pre-emptive nuclear strike against America would be suicide, as senators pushed for a review of policy towards the isolated state.

"I do not think the regime in Pyongyang wants to commit suicide, but that, as they must surely know, would be the result of any attack on the United States," Senator Bob Menendez told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He was speaking as the United Nations adopted new sanctions on North Korea for last month's nuclear test, and as Pyongyang said a new war was "unavoidable" on the peninsula because of South Korean-US military exercises.

The North's military "will exercise the right to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors," Pyongyang's foreign ministry said.

Menendez said the threat was "absurd," but he warned: "There should be no doubt about our determination, willingness, and capability to neutralize and counter any threat that North Korea may present."

North Korea has accumulated some 20 to 40 kilos of plutonium, "enough for perhaps six to eight nuclear weapons," Menendez said.

It is also seeking the capability to fit a nuclear warhead to an intercontinental ballistic missile, with some estimates mentioned in the committee that it may be only months or a year away from achieving that.

"In time, if its present course remains unaltered, North Korea will pose a direct threat to the United States," Menendez warned at a hearing to consider US policy towards Pyongyang.

Ranking Republican member Senator Bob Corker accused US administrations of failing in their policies towards the communist-run state, and of not dissuading its closest ally, China, to stop supporting Pyongyang.

North Korea was "a complex policy conundrum" to which "there is no silver-bullet solution," Corker said.

"Yet after nearly 20 years of unsuccessful policies by successive administrations, it seems logical to me that we ought to undertake a comprehensive review of our North Korean strategy, including harnessing new tools to try to crack the North Korean policy nut."

The US special representative for North Korea, Glyn Davies, admitted progress would not "achieved easily" but he challenged Corker's view.

"We cannot and should not dignify or, worse, feed the North Korean narrative that US actions determine DPRK behavior," he said in his written testimony.

"North Korea makes its own choices, selects its own timing, and is alone responsible for its actions."

But he also laid out US principles for dealing with North Korea, also known as the DPRK, as it veers into new waters under fledgling leader Kim Jung-Un.

"First and foremost, the United States will not accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed state," he said.

"We will not reward the DPRK for the absence of bad behavior. We will not compensate the DPRK merely for returning to dialogue. We will not tolerate North Korea provoking its neighbors."

Davies also stressed that ties would not improve until Pyongyang's relations with South Korea are boosted and the human rights situation in the isolated state is addressed.

A network of political prison camps across the country is reported to hold between 100,000 to 200,000 people including children, he added.

"While denuclearization remains an essential focus of US policy, so, too, does the welfare of North Korea's nearly 25 million people, the vast majority of whom bear the brunt of their government's decision to perpetuate an unsustainable, self-impoverishing military-first policy," he said.

N. Korean general says Pyongyang has nuke-tipped ICBMs on standby

A North Korean general said Thursday that the country has placed long-range missiles armed with nuclear warheads on standby, as Pyongyang said it will not bow to the United Nations resolution condemning its latest atomic weapons test.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Colonel General Kang Pyo-yong said soldiers are already positioned to launch a war of reunification if the order is given by its leaders. The paper said the general made clear at a speech given at a rally in Pyongyang that intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and other rockets capable of attacking pre-set targets have been armed with various types of atomic warheads.

They have what you call very long range rockets, not missiles. Their seekers are very unreliable. And then there is the question of them actually miniatuarizing the nuke warhead to fit inside a missile. Then again, their nuke yield has been even poorer than the one used in Hiroshima.

They belong to the Barking Dog category, even if they posses the capability, they most definitely dont have the will to do it.

Btw, my post before was sarcastic, and not based on anything real.l...lol.

Despite all the rhetoric NK of course wont attack US. Up to now what's being staged is to get the US to the one-to-one nego table with nuke+ballistic missiles as bargaining chips out of isolation, so far in futile.

China won't corner NK. Why shall China fret over NK's new toys? Nor shall America. It's NK threat that further consolidates SK + JP as American allies and justifies American mil. presence endlessly.

Re: White House: US can defend against NKorea attack

Due to the size of NK, US can take care of it with 5-10 MOABs.

Or are we looking at a David vs. Goliath situation here?

S. Korea braces for North's unexpected provocations

South Korea's military is preparing against unexpected military provocations by North Korea, a Seoul official said, as the communist country ratcheted up threats of a nuclear war ahead of a joint South Korea-U.S military drill.

"North Korea may possibly provoke at a time in a place we can never expect," like guerrilla attacks in cyberspace, at the sea border or even at the military demarcation line, the military official said.

The provocations could be in violation of the Armistice Agreement, the official said, referring to the North's recent threats to cancel the truce pact that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

In anticipation of attacks, the official said the South Korean military is stepping up its defense posture, especially in the West Sea border areas where most inter-Korean military skirmishes occur.

South Korea's Navy ordered a heightened defense posture over a group of border islands in the West Sea demarcation areas in preparation against a potential attack, a Navy official said.

Concerns over a potential inter-Korean skirmish are rising as South Korea is set to begin Key Resolve, an 11-day joint military drill with the U.S.

Denouncing the military exercise as targeting North Korea, the country has repeatedly issued threats to wage nuclear war against the U.S. and South Korea and is planning to hold a one-day nationwide military drill of its own early this week.

N. Korea likely to provoke South this year

North Korea is likely to launch a provocative attack on South Korea this year, a top analyst said on Thursday at the launch of his think tank's annual report on the world's military capabilities.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies said North Korea's "military first" doctrine remained clearly intact under youthful leader Kim Jong Un.

Mr Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the London-based IISS's non-proliferation and disarmament programme, said world powers were increasingly concerned about the threat emanating from Pyongyang.

"North Korea presents a significant threat because it has ballistic missiles that can hit Japan and all of Korea," he told AFP.

B-52 bombers flying deterrence missions "to show North Korea U.S. resolve to defend South Korea"

On Mar. 8, a B-52 bomber based at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, flew a mission over South Korea as part of Exercise Foal Eagle.

Although Foal Eagle is an annual exercise involving U.S. and South Korean forces this time the sortie flown by the nuclear bomber (that, obviously, was not armed with nukes) was highlighted by Pentagon Press Secretary George Little.

In a meeting with reporters, Little said the B-52 flight over South Korea was "a stepped-up training effort" to demonstrate American resolve to protect South Korea and to preserve peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

"It's not any secret that we are in the midst of sending a very strong signal that we have a firm commitment to the alliance with our South Korean allies," Little said.

According to the Pentagon, the one on Mar. 8 is not to remain the only such sorties flown by the B-52 bombers. Moreover, the presence of some Stratofortress aircraft in the U.S. Pacific Command area of responsibility is just one of the signs Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un, and his derelict air force, should consider in case of attack on towards the southern neighbor.

Among all the other weapon systems that could be called on to protect South Korea and Japan, currently based at Guam are also some B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, the only platforms in the U.S. Air Force inventory to be capable to carry the recently improved Massive Ordnance Penetrator.

N Korea threatens strike on US airbases

Warning comes day after Pyongyang condemned training flights of nuclear-armed US bombers as "unpardonable provocation".

North Korea has threatened to attack US military bases in Japan in response to the use of nuclear-armed US B-52 bombers in joint military drills with South Korea.

The threat on Thursday came a day after Pyongyang condemned the B-52 flights as an "unpardonable provocation" and threatened military action if they continue.

"The United States is advised not to forget that our precision target tools have within their range the Anderson Air Force base on Guam where the B-52 takes off, as well as the Japanese mainland where nuclear-powered submarines are deployed and the navy bases on Okinawa," the North Korean command spokesman was quoted by KCNA news agency.

The Pentagon confirmed that B-52s, taking off from Andersen Air Force base in Guam, had flown over South Korea as part of annual joint exercises that Pyongyang insist are a rehearsal for provocation.

"We cannot tolerate the US carrying out nuclear strike drills, setting us as targets, and advertising them as strong warning messages," a spokesman for the North's supreme army command said.

Military tensions on the Korean peninsula are at their highest level for years, with North Korea - angered by UN sanctions imposed after its nuclear test last month - threatening a second Korean War backed by nuclear weapons.

B-52s have taken part in South Korea-US joint exercises before, but the Pentagon said it had publicised their use this time to underline US commitment to defending its South Korean ally.

'Bombs over Seoul': New N. Korea propaganda clip threatens to take US hostages in South assault

[겨레의 민심] - 3일만에 끝날 단기결속전 - YouTube

Heavy rocket fire, thousands of tanks rolling towards Seoul as North Korean paratroopers invade from the sky – Pyongyang has released just another propaganda video, this time about attacking the South.

The four-minute video, uploaded to a government news and propaganda YouTube channel 'Uriminzokkiri', shows the South Korean invasion scenario.

The clip entitled 'A Short, Three-Day War' begins with the scenes of heavy artillery fire and then shows North Korean troops in action as they run across a field holding a national flag as bombs explode here and there, producing bright flashes and clouds of smoke. Four thousand tanks and 3,000 armored vehicles will take part in the operation, the narrator says.

After the scenes of the staged ground operation, the video switches to North Korea aviation, showing planes dropping bombs and scores of paratroopers above Seoul.

Meanwhile, the narrator describes that "troops will occupy Seoul and other cities," taking 150,000 US citizens as hostages.

South Korea's US expatriate population is estimated at a little over 130,000, while there are also 28,000 US troops based in the country.

This is not the first time Pyongyang has released video about military assaults. Earlier this week Uriminzokkiri published 'Firestorms' over Washington DC: N. Korean propaganda video threatens US attack — RT News 'Firestorms will rain on the Headquarters of War', portraying a simulated attack on the White House in Washington, DC.

In February the isolated state created a video depicting US President Barack Obama and American soldiers through a background of flames, ending with the a simulation of a nuclear explosion underground.

The clip was released following the successful third nuclear test carried out by Pyongyang. The news of the test was condemned by Washington and Seoul and exacerbated already strained relations between North Korea and the two states.

Another contentious point between the three was the joint US-South Korean military drills taking place in March.

North Korea has issued numerous warnings to Washington and Seoul, threatening to launch a nuclear attack and N. Korea ends armistice amid war threats, South braces for conflict — RT News that ended the Korean War.

North Korea Orders Artillery to Be Combat Ready, Targeting U.S. Bases

North Korea said on Tuesday its strategic rocket and long-range artillery units have been ordered to be combat ready, targeting U.S. military bases on Guam, Hawaii and mainland America after U.S. bombers flew sorties threatening the North.

The order, issued in a statement from the North's military "supreme command", marks the latest fiery rhetoric from Pyongyang since the start of joint military drills by U.S. and South Korean forces early this month.

South Korea's defense ministry said it saw no sign of imminent military action by North Korea.

"From this moment, the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army will be putting into combat duty posture No. 1 all field artillery units, including long-range artillery units and strategic rocket units, that will target all enemy objects in U.S. invasionary bases on its mainland, Hawaii and Guam," the North's KCNA news agency said.

The North previously threatened nuclear attack on the United States and South Korea, although it is not believed to have the capability to hit the continental United States with an atomic weapon. But the U.S. military's bases in the Pacific area are in range of its medium-range missiles.

South Korea's defense ministry said it had detected no signs of unusual activity by the North's military but will monitor the situation. The South and the U.S. military are conducting drills until the end of April, which they have stressed are strictly defensive in nature.

N. Korea threatens Hawaii, US mainland

North Korea put its military on combat ready status Tuesday, with "strategic" rocket units ordered to prepare for possible strikes against the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam, state media reported.

"The Korea People's Army top command declares that all artillery troops including strategic rocket units and long-range artillery units are to be placed under class-A combat readiness," the Korean Central News Agency said.

Re: N. Korea threatens Hawaii, US mainland

North Korea is threatening to strike against the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam after its military was placed in combat ready status, the North's state media said Tuesday.

"The Supreme Command of the North Korean People's Army has ordered all artillery troops including strategic rocket and long-range artillery units to be under class-A combat readiness," said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The artillery units target all U.S. military bases in the Asia-Pacific region including the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam and enemies in South Korea, the statement said.

This is the first time that the reclusive Stalinist state has used the term "combat ready status," according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND).

"It seems that the North Korean military is at its highest-level combat posture in its latest threat to attack South Korea and the United States," the defense ministry said in a statement.

"We are analyzing the North's declaration, while closely watching the North Korean military."

However, there was no unusual military activity in North Korea, it noted.

The command comes one day after the reclusive Stalinist state carried out combined landing drills and fired artillery in simulated coastal defense operations off its eastern coast under the command of young leader Kim Jong-un.

The North's statement seems to have been issued in anger at the recent Korea-United States joint military drills and a newly-signed pact to deter provocations.

The 11-day Key Resolve exercise, a computer simulated joint maneuver, finished last week, while the Foal Eagle exercise, which involves armed forces from South Korea and the United States, will run through April 30.

During the drills, the United States flew a B-52 bomber, a nuclear-capable warplane, over the Korean Peninsula, following the use of a nuclear-powered attack submarine in the exercises.

In addition, the two countries signed a new joint operational plan Friday that will provide a joint military response to low-level provocations by the North, similar to the sinking of the naval ship Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, which took place in March and November 2010, respectively.
