Bangalore, Nov 29: A number of India's nuclearscientists have been dying undermysterious circumstances and the police are classifying them either as unexplained or suicides. Yet, the alarming development has gone largely under-reported in the mainstream media of the nation.
According to anarticle published on the Vice website, two high-ranking engineers K K Josh and Abhish Shivan were found dead on railway tracks. They were not hit by any train but yet were dead. Reports claimed they were poisoned elsewhere before being placed on the tracks to make the deaths look accidental or suicide.
Authorities, however, said they were routine incidents, according to the Vice article. Both the deadscientists were working on INS Arihant, India's first nuclear-powered submarine.

In June 2009, when nuclear scientist Lokanathan Mahalingam's body was found, the establishment downplayed it saying it was a suicide."Pakistani outlets", according to the Vice article,"perhaps unsurprisingly, given relations between the two countries, kept the story going."
Five years before that, an armed group with sophisticated weapons allegedly tried to kidnap an official from India's Nuclear Power Corporation (NPC) although he managed to escape. Another NPC employee, RVI Mule, had also been murdered but the police failed to make any headway. In April 2011, former scientist Uma Rao was found dead and the police claimed it to be a suicide case as well.
There are also cases where the police have concluded adeath as"unexplained". A case in hand is thedeath of M Iyer, who was found with internal haemorrhage in his skull. The police ended clueless about thedeath for Iyer had no injury marks and the probe faded out.
The question is: Why the media and the political leadership of the country, which are otherwise vocal on every other issue, have chosen to remain silent on this alarming deaths? Iran, too, has witnessed its nuclear personnel being attacked but it has vehemently condemned the acts. In India, there is absolutely no noise even when there are a number of suspects working round the clock to undermine the country's security.

this is new to me . The govt should take up this issue strongly, run investigations . As always I think ISI is backing all this. They cant just kill our nuclear scientists! The most discomforting news is death of scientists working on arihant, this could be a espionage to get hands on classified information on arihant. Also, why is the agency downplaying this? Could this also be result of accidental leakage, which the agency is trying to cover up?

The only country who can be behind this is USA. CIA has been trying to stall our nuclear and space programs from 1960s. Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai are alleged to have been killed by CIA.

The only country who can be behind this is USA. CIA has been trying to stall our nuclear and space programs from 1960s. Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai are alleged to have been killed by CIA.

I actually didnt know this...just googled. iIt seems Vikram Sarabhai mentioned he was being watched by both the Russians and the Americans, and despite being in very good health, died in his sleep. while Homi Baba's was a plane crash where no blackbox could be found. Strange.

vikram sarabhai was too young to die due to natural causes. I always thought how can a fine and fit man can die so young?

Theres nothing strange about this, other powerful countries will always try to sabotage your programme and the best way to do is by just killing the brains of your country to create setbacks in its programme so they have to depend on those powerful countries in future.Classic strategies.

But whats strange is we have done nothing to aviod this, we keep failing to protect our scientists. Our priorities are to protect the corrupt politicians and rich folks and arrogant film stars because apparently they are our biggest assets and future of this country.

This is cleary the work of Chi/Pak agencies, US has no interest in keeping India from being a powerful counter for PAk and China, they have known since a long time India remains the only proper strong partner in the region.

We forget ISI and Chinese have made a lot of inroads into India, they are quite a few moles, quite a few hidden killers, there are plenty in our country who would kill quite easily 'no questions asked' for payments. Security needs to be beefed up.

Read about ISRO spy case. Only US had an interest in doing it. ISI and China Intel are considered hostile and must have been in check. But we consider US as almost a 'strategic ally' so CIA has a free hand. CIA is the most powerful intel agency with huge budget. Impossible for Pakis.

If this is what you refer to, well Mr. Nambi has been cleared of all charges. CIA is powerful yes but they have had their hand busy with Al-weirdos for the last decade and a half. Silly to underestimate ISI and the Chinese, The ISI is terror central and their key target has always been India. The US over the last decade has more or less come to a self understanding that it is in their best interest to keep is cool with India. Pak and China have most to loose with a powerful Indian nuke/space estabishment.

I did not say Nambi Narayanan was a spy. He was implicated in a false case by CIA moles in IB which ensured India's cryogenic engine program got delayed by a decade.

i wouldnt say its cia, isi or any other, but if someone thinks US is innocent is wrong. Majority of our history they were always against us, and as soon as China as a military power is diminished, they will again rotate their guns towards us. They dont actually care about China invading Japan or Taiwan etc, what they do care about is their supremacy in the world. When China was a weak economy like India, they fully supported them, gave them money, technical assistance for building their nuclear subs etc. But as soon as China became a global power, they became a enemy of US. Typical strategies.

The police is a State subject. The investigations are usually done by state police and CBI comes into picture if the matter affects national security.

It is a fact that internal security is weak in India. There is huge need to reinforce internal security.

The Congressi culture simply ignored national interests. So I am not surprised if they just ignored these incidents.

I agree that security of these scientists is vital. At least proper investigations in the circumstances of their death must be done.

Yes we need proper military police or internal secret police for looking after our human assets.

It is a disgrace that srudents from IIT dont join our strategic research or even ISRO. Salary and perks need to increase and proper motivation for recruitment.

I thought Vikram Sarabhai was appointed to head the nuclear program by Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 and the two of them basically scrapped the weaponisation program.

Why would anyone want to kill such a pacifist?

Killing Homi in 1966 is more believable as a method to stop Indias nuclearisation but CIA would never crash a plane to do it.

It was our bad luck.

Nehru till 62, Shastri, Sarabhai and Morarjee Desai effectively torpedoed our nuclear program.

Killing intellectuals assets of another country is in interests of nations despite a friend or foe. National objectives of friendly nation and a foe nation can sometimes overlap. Such instances will prove dangerous for human assets of the country in the crosshair.

Example:
To prove a point CIA can use its assets in ISI to disrupt peace in India. Clandestine ops like these are messy than sweaty orgies.

To protect our assets human or otherwise, we should stop categorizing countries on the smileys they put out to us and guard our assets very very jealously.

Hope the new Govt shields our human assets from dangerous schemes.
