80 U.S. troops in Chad will aid search for abducted Nigerian girls

The United States deployed 80 members of its armed forces to Chad to help in the search for the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls, the White House said Wednesday.

"These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area," it said in a letter.

"The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required."

President Barack Obama informed the House speaker and the president of the Senate of the move.

The forces will be involved in maintaining aircraft and analyzing data, but because they are armed, the President is required by law to inform the speaker of the House, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

Nigeria's Boko Haram kills 28 in three village attacks

Suspected Islamist Boko Haram gunmen rampaged through three villages in northern Nigeria, killing 28 people and burning houses to the ground in a pattern of violence that has become almost a daily occurrence, according to police and witnesses.

All three attacks happened on Thursday in remote parts of Borno state, the epicentre of Boko Haram's increasingly bloody struggle for an Islamic kingdom in religiously mixed Nigeria.

One took place right next to Chibok, by the Cameroon border, from where more than 200 school girls were abducted last month.

Boko Haram kills 35 in Nigeria's restive north: Military

Boko Haram gunmen killed 35 people in attacks on three villages in Nigeria's restive northeast Borno state near the border with Cameroon, a military source and residents said Thursday.

Dozens of Boko Haram gunmen dressed in military uniform stormed Gumushi, Amuda and Arbokko in all-terrain vans and motorcycles, opening fire on residents and torching homes with petrol bombs, they said.

Nigeria's president orders full scale offensive on Boko Haram

Nigeria's president said on Thursday he had ordered "a full-scale operation" against Boko Haram Islamist militants and sought to reassure parents of 219 schoolgirls being held by the group that their children would be freed.

Speaking on Nigeria's Democracy Day, Goodluck Jonathan said he had authorized security forces to use any means necessary under the law to ensure that Boko Haram, which operates in the country's northeast, is defeated.

"I am determined to protect our democracy, our national unity and our political stability, by waging a total war against terrorism," Jonathan said in a televised speech.

It was not immediately clear what such an offensive might entail, given that the northeast of the country has been under a state of emergency and a full scale military operation for a year. Nigerian forces are also hugely overstretched.

Chad's President Idriss Deby also used the phrase "total war" after neighboring West African states met in Paris in mid-May to seek a common strategy to fight the militants.

"I assure you that Nigeria will be safe again and that these thugs will be driven away. It will not happen overnight, but we will spare no effort to achieve this goal," Jonathan said.

The scale of the challenge was underlined by a fresh attack on Thursday in the northeastern village of Gurmushi, near Nigeria's border with Cameroon, in which suspected Islamist gunmen riding motorbikes killed 32 people.

Deadly blast targets Nigeria football fans

bombing in a bar in Nigeria's northeast has killed at least 14 people and injured another 14 in the second attack targeting football fans in a fortnight.

The blast on Sunday hit the town of Mubi in Adamawa state, one of three in the northeast which has been under a state of emergency for more than a year as Nigeria's military has tried to crush Boko Haram's five-year uprising.

Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idriss said residents in Mubi town had told him dozens were killed in the attack.

"The police are confirming, so far, 14 people have died in the blast but locals are telling us at least 40 people may have died in that attack at the moment," our reporter said from Abuja.

The bomb exploded around 6.30pm (1730 GMT) in Gavan in the Mubi area of Adamawa and reportedly targeted fans who were watching a local club match.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Hundreds feared dead in 'massive' Boko Haram village raids

Hundreds of people may have been killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on four villages in northeast Nigeria, a local lawmaker and residents said on Thursday.

Some community leaders put the death toll in Tuesday's attacks in the Gwoza district of Borno state as high as 400 to 500 but there was no independent confirmation because of poor communications in the area.

Lawmaker Peter Biye told AFP: "The killings are massive but nobody can give a toll for now because nobody has been able to go to that place because the insurgents are still there. They have taken over the whole area."

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnap 20 women in northeast

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen have reportedly kidnapped 20 women from a nomadic settlement in northeast Nigeria near the town of Chibok, where the Islamic militants abducted more than 300 schoolgirls and young women on April 15.

Alhaji Tar, a member of the vigilante groups set up to resist Boko Haram's attacks, says the men arrived at noon Thursday in the Garkin Fulani settlement and forced the women to enter their vehicles at gunpoint. He says they drove away to an unknown location in the remote stretch of Borno state.

Tar says the group also kidnapped three young men who tried to stop the kidnapping.

Boko Haram wants to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria. Some 275 of the kidnapped girls remain missing.

Boko Haram leader declares Islamic caliphate in Nigeria - Washington Times

A northeast Nigerian town seized earlier this month by Boko Haram militants has been placed under an Islamic caliphate, the group's leader said.

"Thanks be to Allah, who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate," Abubakar Shekau says in a 52-minute video obtained by the Agence France-Presse. "By the grace of Allah, we will not leave the town. We have come to stay."
In the video, Mr. Shekau lauds the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who in late June declared himself "the caliph" and "leader of Muslims everywhere," AFP reported. It was not clear, however, if Mr. Shekau was declaring himself to be a part of Mr. Baghdadi's caliphate or if he was referring to a separate caliphate in Nigeria.

In addition to Gwoza, Boko Haram is believed to be in control of large swathes of territory in Borno state and at least one town in neighboring Yobe state, AFP reported. Experts said Boko Haram is closer than ever to achieving its goal of forming an Islamic state across northern Nigeria. The Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, declared a caliphate in June after capturing vast swathes of land in northern Iraq and eastern Syria.

At least 120 dead in Nigeria mosque attack

At least 120 dead in Nigeria mosque attack | SBS News

At least 120 people have been killed and 270 others wounded in a bomb and gun attack at the mosque of one of Nigeria's top Islamic leaders.

The attack at the Grand Mosque in Kano, the biggest city in the mainly Muslim north of the country, came just as Friday prayers had started.

The mosque is attached to the palace of the Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II, Nigeria's second most senior Muslim cleric, who last week urged civilians to take up arms against Boko Haram.

The blasts came after a bomb attack was foiled against a mosque in the northeastern city of Maiduguri earlier on Friday, five days after two female suicide bombers killed over 45 people in the city.

National police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said the bombers blew themselves up in quick succession then "gunmen opened fire on those who were trying to escape".

Ojukwu said he did not know whether the suicide bombers were male or female, after a spate of attacks by women in recent months, and did not give an exact figure on the number of gunmen.

But he said an angry mob killed four of the shooters in the chaotic aftermath. Witnesses in the city said they were set on fire.

An AFP reporter at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital morgue counted 92 bodies, most of them men and boys with blast injuries and severe burns.

As night fell, hundreds of people were desperately trying to use the lights on their mobile phones to identify loved ones.

But a senior rescue official said later that there were at least 120 dead and 270 wounded. Emergency workers were still trying to visit all hospitals, he added.

The Emir of Kano last week told worshippers at the same mosque that northerners should take up arms against Boko Haram, which has been fighting for a hardline Islamic state since 2009.

Boko Haram have a record of attacking prominent clerics. In July 2012 a suicide bomber killed five people leaving Friday prayers at the home of the Shehu of Borno in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram attacks in recent months have ranged from the far northeast of Nigeria, across the wider north and northwest, using hit-and-run tactics, suicide bombings and car bombs.

Authorities in Cameroon, Chad and Niger have all expressed concern about Boko Haram's ability to conduct cross-border strikes, particularly as the dry season approaches.

Re: At least 120 dead in Nigeria mosque attack

What motivates these suicide bombers? I know they don't value their lives because they can breed like rabbit, but what else?

Boko Haram raids 10 towns and many other villages, atleast 2000 missing.

Nigerian Officials: 2,000 People Are Missing After Boko Haram Raided A Bunch Of Towns | Business Insider India

In some of the worst violence to hit Nigeria since the extremist group, Boko Haram raided villages, kidnapped hundreds, and killed many more, the militant group has hit the town of Baga with a new round of assaults.

A local Nigerian senator says at least 2,000 are missing after Boko Haram militants raided more than 10 towns in Nigeria just this week. Ahmed Zanna, senator for Borno state, says between 10 and 20 other villages have also been overrun. Zanna tells NBC News "the whole area is covered in bodies."

Senior government official Musa Alhaji Bukar told BBC News 2,000 people were killed in the rampages.

Soldiers had fled over the weekend when the Sunni jihadist group overran a nearby army base.

At least 100 people were killed when the militants first took over the town on the edge of Lake Chad, the district head Abba Hassan said on Thursday.

"I escaped with my family in the car after seeing how Boko Haram was killing people ... I saw bodies in the street. Children and women, some were crying for help," Mohamed Bukar told Reuters after fleeing to the Borno state capital Maiduguri.

The militants have been waging an insurgency to establish an Islamic state in the country's northeast for five years. The number and scale of attacks rose sharply last year, after the government imposed emergency rule on the three worst-hit states.

Reuters TV footage showed scores of civilians waiting on sandy streets on the outskirts of Baga to catch buses out of town. Many carried the few possessions they had salvaged, such as bags of clothes and rolled up mattresses.

Boko Haram has taken over or rendered ungovernable swathes of the northeast, especially Borno state.
