Few points here ..

1. 1B1 under service is 60% made by Private co, And rest 40% is made by OFB ..

2. Pvt sector is better off serial production than R&D this is due to national security ..

3. Their are no companies in India that can invest the amount similar to DRDO in R&D as they will go bankrupt ..
totally agree with you,but its current thing i mean in few yrs or in a decade will private companies gonna in weapons system.
right now they dont have money or infrastructure but they will right, because its lucrative market in weapons business.
western countries specially US are ahead because of aero-space companies like lockheed-martin,northrop-grunman,sikorsky,etc.
if indian pvt.companies dont comes forward then india will always gonna behind them and will be dependent on them.

It looks like a ak 47/74 with poly furniture .. It makes sense for MHA troops . Better than buying more vz 58s or other AK variants from Eastern Europe.

Can someone explain how this gun is different from the original AK47?
Also the reason for foreign tender was interchangeable barrels for different types of ammunition, ambidextrous operations, rails and gadgets...what happened to that?

I can try and answer the second question.

Interchangeable barrels for different types of ammo can be handled by our indigenously developed MCIWS: http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/indian-army/58105-drdo-multical-rifle-unveiled.html

Thanks. That is one nice looking rifle.
So, now we have the MCIWS and Ishapore AK47.
If I am guessing correctly then Ishapore AK47 goes to CRPF and security forces under homw ministry, while the MCIWS will be for the army.
But wasn't the original tender for the army?

I would call it AKM or AKM clone.

AKM will go to COIN, Home Minsitry and Defence Ministry forces will probably get INSAS, and MCIWS will probably be used for special forces. This is partly speculation.

MCIWS is meant for the infantry, the SF have their Tavors and a free choice in selecting their weapons. The MCIWS is meant to REPLACE the INSAS as the standard issue weapon of the regular forces.

Instead just going to make a clone of AK and renaming it, OFB should have placed atleast came up with some innovative modifications;
1-Integrated rails in the receiver to mount scopes.
2-Rear sight at the very end of receiver like that in M-16/4s or like in new AK-12
3-AK-74 or M-4 or the recoil compensator used by Russian SF instead of the age old slant muzzle brake.
4-90 Degree gas block instead of the old 45 degre gas block.
5-Instead of Fixed or folding stocks it should have M4 type collapsing butt stocks with recoil buffers just like the one we spotted in the DRDOs multoi cal weapon.
6-A better fire selector just like the ones in VZ,AK12 or those American gunsmiths shows us in youtube.

Design based on GSQR by Paramilitary and other forces, It is not an independent design by OFB like in case of Excalibur ..

In the GSQR they could have mentioned that instead of an semi SOPMOD AK they need a SOPMOD VZ58.

Something like this ....

It's a bullpup kit for an AK 47 from Center Balanced Systems

Removable dust covers with rails and sights require very high quality machining (finnish Valmet is an example). Integrated rails work very with those guns where the upper does not move with respect to barrel, i.e. the upper/lower style construction of m-16 family. The only practical place to mount sights on AKMs are upper hand guards, but rails could have been mounted like Excalibur.
2-Rear sight at the very end of receiver like that in M-16/4s or like in new AK-12
See above.
3-AK-74 or M-4 or the recoil compensator used by Russian SF instead of the age old slant muzzle brake.
Not needed on an AKM. The ammunition contains less powder than 5.5.6 NATO. It will needlessly increase cost.
4-90 Degree gas block instead of the old 45 degre gas block.
AKM's low velocity bullet does not create a problem with 45 degree gas block. Something they should fix on MCIWS.
5-Instead of Fixed or folding stocks it should have M4 type collapsing butt stocks with recoil buffers just like the one we spotted in the DRDOs multoi cal weapon.
Buffer stock is useless on a gun which does not require a buffer spring in stock, unless you meant a telescopic butt stock. The SIG style folding stock as on Excalibur is a good choice. A folding telescopic butt stock would have been a better choice. No modern gun is designed with a buffer spring in stock, if they did it with MCIWS, it is a very very bad choice because you cannot make a folding stock version of the gun.
6-A better fire selector just like the ones in VZ,AK12 or those American gunsmiths shows us in youtube.
Should have gone with an INSAS style selector. Anything else slows down training and adoption.
