New China map shows Arunachal Pradesh as part of Tibet

The Chinese government, in a new vertical map of the country, has shown Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory, triggering controversy even as India called it its "alienable part".
The new map of China, unveiled some days back, shows the Northeastern state as part of Tibet. China has always staked claim on parts of Arunachal.

Reacting to the new map, the Indian government has said Arunachal Pradesh was an "inalienable part of India".

"Arunachal Pradesh is inalienable part of India, which has been conveyed to Chinese authorities on several occasions including highest level," the Ministry of External Affairs said. (WATCH VIDEO: MAP ROW)

The Arunachal Pradesh government condemned the claim of China over the state, and said the Centre should look for a solution to this territorial dispute.

"We objected and condemn this claim of Arunachal. We want the government of India to talk to China and look for solution for this," Chief Minister Nabam Tuki was quoted as telling ANI.

The controversy comes as India's Vice-President Hamid Ansari is on a trip to China. He was in Beijing on Saturday and called for India and China to narrow down differences and build on convergences by exploiting the potential of Panchsheel, the five principles of peaceful coexistence propounded by the two countries along with Myanmar in 1954.

The news of China showing Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory was first reported in The Washington Post.

The report said new map showed "China's claim over the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh".

China, it said, claimed most of the state was part of southern Tibet.

The new map has been made by Hunan Map Press and Hubei Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geo-Information, said a Wall Street Journal report citing Chinese media.

It is the first official map of China to be stretched vertically to include all of islands it claims in the South China Sea, said China's Xinhua news agency, according to WSJ.

The map also gives greater play to its claims on the South China Sea making the disputed waters and its numerous islets and reefs more clearly seem like national territory, Reuters added.
Previous maps published by the government already include China's claims to most of the South China Sea, but in a little box normally in a bottom corner to enable the rest of the country to fit on the map.

The new, longer map dispenses with the box, and shows continental China along with its self-declared sea boundary in the South China Sea - stretching right down to the coasts of Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines - on one complete map.

"The islands of the South China Sea on the traditional map of China are shown in a cut-away box, and readers cannot fully, directly know the full map of China," the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily said on its website.

Old maps make the South China Sea's islands appear more like an appendage rather than an integral part of the country, which the new map makes "obvious with a single glance", the report added.

"This vertical map of China has important meaning for promoting citizens' better understanding of ... maintaining (our) maritime rights and territorial integrity," an unnamed official with the map's publishers told the newspaper.

China's foreign ministry said people should not read too much into the issuing of the new map.

"The goal is to serve the Chinese public. As for the intentions, I think there is no need to make too much of any association here," ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing.

"China's position on the South China Sea issue is consistent and extremely clear. Our stance has not changed."

Beijing claims about 90 per cent of the South China Sea, but parts of the potentially energy-rich waters are also subject to claims by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Tensions have risen sharply in the region in recent months, especially between China and both Vietnam and the Philippines.

China's positioning of an oil rig in waters claimed by both Beijing and Hanoi last month has led to rammings at sea between ships from both countries and anti-Chinese violence in Vietnam.

Why is this news? China has included South Tibet/Arunachal on its domestic maps since 1950. India has included Aksai Chin on its maps since 1954.

Pre-partition maps of British India donot show Arunachal Pradesh as part of India.

Aksai Chin was lost in war initiated by India. Why cry over spoilt milk?

We have our map and China has theirs. Which political map of this region does the rest of the world endorse?
It will be interesting to compile maps of all countries and to see whose boundaries (Indo-Chin) are more accepted by whom.
Is there an official political map of the world?

The UN's official political map of the world:

http://www.un.org/depts/Cartographic/map/profile/world.pdf

The boundaries and names shown and the designations used
on this map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance
by the United Nations.
Final boundary between the Republic of Sudan and the
Republic of South Sudan has not yet been determined.
*Dotted line represents approximately the Line of Control
in Jammu and Kashmir agreed upon by India and Pakistan.
The final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been
agreed upon by the parties.
**Appears without prejudice to the question of sovereignty.
Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh are both outlined, to denote their status as territory in dispute, along with all of Jammu and Kashmir (both India-occupied and Pakistani-occupied).

Going by the same logic TIBET and Xinjiang shall be considered as territory in dispute because those areas were illegally occupied by China...

But the UN - the world's collective political opinion - does not respect your version of logic, and hence it is irrelevant.

What matter most is what the people in TIBET and XINJIANG feels and wants... The destiny of TIBET and XINJIANG can not be settled from Beijing nor by the UN...

What matter most is what the people in TIBET and XINJIANG feels and wants...
What matters the most to whom? To 99% of Chinese people, what matters is what they want.

The destiny of TIBET and XINJIANG can not be settled from Beijing nor by the UN...
The destiny of a region is determined by the forces which can act upon it. The people who live there are merely one such force, and in an age of increasingly centralized military, political, and economic power structures, they are an increasingly weak force. Beijing has far greater forces arrayed in Tibet than a few yak herders and monks.

Likewise, no matter how hard ETIM tries in Xinjiang, the forces they have are but a little finger to the iron fist of China.

What sort of iron fist? China has just executed a dozen of ETIM's operatives and imprisoned 300 more with barely four weeks of counterattacks, obliterating the core of their Xinjiang network - and that's simply the stuff that gets reported. Remember those 13 guys that died attacking a police station? Chinese state security had the ringleader on a tape, talking about blowing things up as early as Summer of 2008. Then, his group was infiltrated. When they decided to get serious this past month, Chinese intelligence fed them dud explosives and watched them make a fool of themselves with a car bomb that didn't go off. Then those poor idiots died attacking what they thought were unarmed police officers at the station with homemade guns, not knowing half the police had been replaced with special forces wielding machine pistols, shotguns, and grenades. Nobody in Xinjiang farts without a Chinese database tracking it, and anyone in Xinjiang thinking about rebellion eventually finds himself dead and forgotten.

They want piece and not peace.

A piece of every territory that they can fudge and declare to be theirs.

He said McMohan and not Manmohan!

The Chinese had already encroached in Aksai Chin and occupied it before 1962. In fact, this was the cause of the war.

Tibet is indeed a disputed area being an independent country occupied by the Chinese red hordes.

Note all the light yellow areas are non Han and were independent before being subjugated and suppressed.by Han China.

How they are suppressing is as elaborated by t_co in his post on Tibet and what the Han Communists are doing.

Please read how you are sadly mistaken that Kashmiris support you.

1965 and 1971 the Kashmiris alerted the Indian Army, when you tried infiltration posing as Kashmiris.

The first time it was tribals with Pak Army who came and attacked and were thrown out and Pakistan was saved by the idealist Nehru.

I am glad you quote the UN as the authority. Do check how you flout the resolution on Kashmir where you have to vacate Kashmir for a plebiscite and you haven't.

I am sure you haven't lost East Pakistan in your textbooks too!

UN and world also does not respect your version of logic to include Arunanchal Pradesh or any part of India in your country map. It can be replied in the same manner by including disputed areas that you occupied into Indian map.

It's time to respond China in same language and release a new map where some parts of China included in India. Some parts mean disputed parts.
