What about Narendra Modi than . Is he ok for wartime , as a PM ?
Maybe but there are plenty who would try the best to prevent him from reaching that position by citing 2002 riots.
They would easily succeed in that.Unfortunately he does not belong to the G**dhi family that gained sympathy after what happened in Delhi in 1984.

International relations are very dynamic. Indias first choice to align with (NAM was a joke) was the US but moved towards the Soviets after the US cold shoulder probably from the fact that earlier India did the same to the US when it wanted to nail China at the hight of the Tibet movement back then and India backed off.

There were reports of the US wanting India to go nuclear when they heard of Chinese weapons program. Nehru declined. If we had taken American advice, we would have gone nuclear before NSG came in place. Indo US relations then went downhill thereafter.
I doubt the US would have supported India acquiring nukes. civil nuclear tech is a different thing. The US was even against the UK and France getting nukes but when India did its "peaceful nuclear explosion" That is when US started a formal regime to block other countries from getting nuke weapons. The NSG was created specifically keeping Indian moves in mind.

Besides, the way Pakistan had joined CENTO and SEATO and given full access to the Americans to access their airfields e.t.c, it would have been difficult to go down the level of Pakistan to curry US favor. Remember, no one expected India to last more than a few years in its current form. The UK had played a major role in making US align with Pakistan and Pakistan reciprocated. They were provided by the best US military weapons and later when Pakistan was put under military sanction in 1965, weapons were supplied to Iran with an understanding that this may be provided to Pakistan if needed. In 1971 war, US Fighter Jets were provided by Iran to Pakistan as well although they could not turn the battle outcome.

Ejaz, the US supported India acquiring nukes in late 50s when the chinese were going after the bomb. Eisenhower visited India and probably discussed that (speculation). China conducted their first in 1964. I have to look for a link for it, but there sure was US attempt to help or at least prod India into a weapons program.

US admin position on India changed when India showed no inclination to ally with India.

US may not have wanted the UK or France to go nuclear because it may gave wanted those countries stay under their nuke umbrella so that they permanently be under them. They were right in their assessment. France went with an independent foreign policy and withdrew from NATO command.

With India, they wanted a counter to commie china.

Russia started assisting China is their Nuke weapons program. Ofcourse US wanted to help India with whatever required to keep asia in check. We even had joint CIA operation over himalayas for SIGNIT to spy on Chinese reactors. Later US caught breakthrough in satellite tech giving them capability to capture high resolution imagery & didnt require Indian help.

Satellites are not enough. If India and USA had cooperated more closely when Chinese did their nuclear tests, Seismic data as well as radiation samples in the air would also have been possible. Speaking of Satellite intelligence it was US satellite intelligence that gave India the heads up about

1)IRBM's pointed at India from Tibet

2) Chinese secret missile base in the Gobi desert

3)Chinese secret submarine base
