Yep! It's a living hell operating out there in those secondary jungles especially at night. Snakes are ok, they usually slither away and some you catch for food during long range patrols that can last three to four days. But what screws you are the 3-inch long tiger leeches which are as fat as ones thumb, crawling all over the place and falling from above through your collars getting inside you and sucking your blood. The mosquitoes are in the millions and are as large as fireflies, buzzing you like bombers approaching for the kill! You can't rest, you can't sleep. There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide! LRPs (Long Range Patrols) in NE jungles suck!!That region has very dense forests and poisonous reptiles, more over swamps and tough mountainous topography.
This is the reason they always carry salt. Some times they were advised to marinate themselves with salt before LRP. I don't know what they do now.Yep! Back to base when you open your jungle shoes and camo dress, you see just blood and the leeches stuck there on your shins and ankles, your back and chest!! You're a bloody mess! But you get used to this after a couple of LRPs.
This is what I'm talking of....Effect of only one leech. And there are dozens by the time you are back to base!
By the way, you can't pull these mothafukrs out! The only way is by salt or fire!
