2. The helicopter's APS-153(V) multimode radars are the world's premier systems of this class. Its roles - Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) ... (more)

3. Surface surveillance, Maritime interdiction, Combat Search and Rescue/Search and Rescue, MedEvac, Logistical support, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), Battle damage assessment and Naval surface fire support.

4. In simple terms, the APS-153(V) ''meets the critical design challenges of the maritime military helicopter environment: rugged, lightweight, low-prime power, extremely small target detection, high-resolution imaging and long-range surface search.''

5. The AAS-44C(V), described as ''a forward-looking infrared targeting system [with] video imagery, which helps soldiers, intelligence analysts and commanders in the field make critical operating decisions.''

6. Airborne Low Frequency Sonar (likely the AN/AQS-22) described as ''the primary undersea anti-submarine warfare sensor for the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multi-mission helicopter.'' It enables the helicopter to engage targets with its Mk-54 light weight torpedo.

7. An integrated inertial navigation system with Selective Availability Anti-spoofing Module (SAASM) which is ''used by military Global Positioning System receivers to allow decryption of precision GPS observations.'' This allows accurate, jam resistant navigation.

8. ''The AN/SQQ series of sonobuoys consists of the SSQ-36 bathythermograph (BT); SSQ-53 passive directional low frequency analyze and record (DIFAR); SSQ-62 directional command active sonobuoy system (DICASS).'' This allows the chopper to hunt down subs and prepare for attack.

9. AGM-114Q Hellfire missiles - a surprisingly limited number of missiles which can take out small craft or targets on the ground.

10. Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System rockets - described as a weapon system guidance kit which ''transforms an unguided 2.75-inch (70 millimeter) rocket into a precision-guided rocket, giving warfighters a low-cost surgical strike capability.''

11. 30 Mk-54 torpedoes ... again a limited number of weapons for a fleet of 24. The torpedoes incorporate the most modern technologies from the MK 50 and MK 48 ADCAP (advanced capability) programs. It also utilizes the proven MK 46 warhead and propulsion subsystems.

12. M-240D crew served guns, ''a family of belt-fed, gas-operated medium machine guns that chamber the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.''

13. GAU-21 crew served guns which ''produces a blistering 1,100 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire through the use of open-bolt operation and a dual recoil buffer system.''

14. Very importantly ... 2 Naval Strike Missile ''Emulators'' and 4 Captive Inert Training missiles. Surprisingly no NSM missiles themselves which can strike targets such as ships more than 185km away. Hmmm.

15. AN/AVS-9(V) series of aviator's night vision systems which ''are available in more than 40 different configurations that allow pilots to conduct critical operations on the darkest of nights.''

16. AN/ARC-210 RT-1990A (C) radios with COMSEC - The ARC-210 is a family of radios for military aircraft that provides two-way, multi-mode voice and data communications. This will also allow our choppers to ''talk'' to friendly US assets.

17. One legacy/spare MH-60 platform - presumably for training purposes. A used US Navy chopper.

18. AN/ARC-220 High Frequency airborne communication system, ''an easy-to-operate, multifunctional, fully digital signal processing high-frequency radio for rotary-wing applications.''

19. AN/APX-123 Identification Friend of Foe systems ... BAE Systems’ common transponder (CXP) is the U.S. Navy and Army standard transponder for all retrofit and new product applications. Absolutely critical system in dense airspace or when engaging in battle.

20. Spare engines (T-700-GE-401C), documents, training equipment and a whole lot more. Bottom line ... If the Rafale is the IAF's gold standard for combat aircraft, then this aircraft is the gold standard for a maritime multi-role helicopter. It doesn't get any better.

Raytheon and Kongsberg unveiled lethal version of MH-60 Romeo armed with Naval Strike Missiles

Raytheon Missile Systems, partnered with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, has unveiled a lethal version of MH-60 Romeo multimission helicopter armed with two Naval Strike Missiles.

Media specialist James Drew has posted a photo of an advanced helicopter with Naval Strike Missiles that was unveiled during the Sea Air Space Exposition at the Gaylord National Convention Center in National Harbor.

“Potentially the most lethal MH-60R Seahawk on the planet, armed with twin 100-nautical-mile, air-launched Naval Strike Missiles,” he said on Twitter.

The Naval Strike Missile is a long-range, precision strike weapon that can find and destroy enemy ships at distances up to 100 nautical miles away. The stealthy missile flies at sea-skimming altitude, has terrain-following capability and uses an advanced seeker for precise targeting in challenging conditions.

The MH-60 Romeo multimission helicopter will receive two Naval Strike Missile (NSM) in a helicopter-launched application.

According to Jane’s Defence Weekly, the Indian Navy appears poised to become the first customer for the helicopter-launched Naval Strike Missile. The missile will be integrated into Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky MH-60R multimission helicopters that India is looking to acquire under a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) case.

The MH-60R is equipped with a highly sophisticated combat system designed to employ Hellfire air-to-surface missiles and the Mark 54 anti-submarine torpedo. The primary missions of the helicopter is anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare. Secondary missions include search and rescue, logistics support, personnel transport and medical evacuation.

#US sends LoA to India for 24 MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters for the navy

.

The US Government has formally sent the expected Letter of Agreement (LoA) for 24 MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters, to the Indian Government earlier this week. In view of China’s expansion of its presence in the India Ocean, the helicopter deal estimated at around $2.6 billion, will help in boosting the Indian Navy’s anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations.

The 24 MH-60R fourth generation helicopters will come to the Indian Navy will come armed with torpedoes and missiles which will be used for anti-submarine warfare. US President Donald Trump and his administration consider India as a major partner and sales of these helicopters will ensure stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific Region.

Confirming this highly placed source told Financial Express Online that “The letter was received earlier this week and the two governments are expected to negotiate and sign the final contract by the fourth quarter of this year.” Adding, it is expected to have a 30 per cent offset contract as well.

This LoA will help in expediting the process of acquiring these helicopters from the US-based Sikorsky-Lockheed Martin, which is coming through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route.

Globally renowned aerospace scientist, Dr Vivek Lall, who joined Lockheed Martin last year, has spearheaded game-changing US- India bilateral defence trade, joined Lockheed Martin last year. Once the sale goes through it will further deepen the India-US defence sales and will support the foreign and national security policy of the US which will help to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship.

Financial Express Online was the first to report that the deal will be finalised in later this year and the helicopters will be inducted over five years. These helicopters are expected to replace the ageing British-made Sea King helicopters.

Last year, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had given approval for the US-based Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky MH-60Rs `Romeos’ fitted with sensors through the FMS route from the US.

Sources have also confirmed that the proposed package along with the helicopters includes related anti-submarine warfare equipment and weapons, anti-surface warfare weapons, and air-to-ground weapons, as well as spares, training, and support.

Post this procurement, the Indian Navy requires123 naval multirole helicopters in due time. These are required to be manufactured in India under the ‘Strategic Partner’ model of the Defence Procurement Policy (DPP), by a domestic private company with technology transfer from an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The total value of this procurement would be estimated at about $ 10 billion.

It's Confirmed - Deal for 24 MH-60R Seahawk Naval Helicopters late in 2019
India to sign a $2 billion-plus contract for the procurement of 24 Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk multirole naval helicopters. “The LOR (letter of request) and LOA (letter of acceptance) procedures [are on track] and we should be ready by the end of the year,” Admiral Karambir Singh was quoted as saying by The Economic Times on July 25.

The helicopters will be directly bought from the U.S. government under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to expedite the procurement of the new helicopters. Let’s remind that India’s Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the procurement of 111 armed light naval utility helicopters (NUH) and 24 naval multirole helicopters (NMRH) for the Indian Navy under the Indian Ministry of Defense’s new strategic partnership policy in August 2018.

The MoD in February issued a new Expression of Interest (EOI) officially relaunching the entire NUH procurement process, following the breakdown of negotiations over the purchase of 16 U.S.-made Sikorsky S-70B-x helicopters, although their acquisition had already been cleared in 2014 by the DAC. The new EOI calls for 16 helicopters directly bought from abroad, and the remaining 95 to be manufactured in India. The 24 NMRHs will now be directly purchased from the United States and not fall under the MoD’s strategic partnership policy.

The U.S. State Department cleared the possible sale of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters in April 2019 for an estimated $2.6 billion, Franz-Stefan Gady recalls. The FMS deal includes 30 APS-153(V) Multi-Mode radars, 60 T700-GE-401C engines, 24 Airborne Low Frequency System (ALFS), 1,000 AN/SSQ-36/53/62 sonobuoys; 30 MK 54 torpedoes; 10 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles; 38 Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System (APKWS) rockets; and 70 AN/AVS-9 Night Vision Devices, in addition to other equipment and parts.

MH-60R Romeo

The upcoming ASW giant of the Indian Navy

The MH-60R is equipped for a range of missions including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search-and-rescue (SAR), naval gunfire support (NGFS), surveillance, communications relay, logistics support and personnel transfer and vertical replenishment (VERTREP).

For anti-surface warfare missions, the helicopter can be equipped with a range of weapons on the four weapons stations, including Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire anti-surface missiles.

For anti-submarine warfare, the MH-60R can carry up to three ATK mk50 or mk46 active / passive lightweight torpedoes. A pintle-mounted 7.62mm machine gun can be fitted for self-defence.

♦ Countermeasures and sensors technology

The helicopter is fitted with a Lockheed Martin AN/ALQ-210 electronic support measures system (ESM). Electronic warfare systems include the ATK AN/AAR-47 missile warner, laser warning system, BAE Systems AN / ALQ-144 infrared jammer and AN / ALE-39 chaff and flare decoy dispenser.

For anti-submarine warfare missions, the helicopter is equipped with a sonobuoy launcher and a Raytheon AN / AQS-22 advanced airborne low-frequency (ALFS) dipping sonar.

The MH-60R is fitted with the Raytheon AN / AAS-44 detecting / tracking system, which includes a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and laser rangefinder.

The helicopter’s radar is the Telephonics AN / APS-147 multi-mode radar, which has inverse synthetic aperture (ISAR) imaging and periscope and small target detection capabilities. Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract in July 2008 to develop a new radar system named AN / APS-153 radar, with automatic radar periscope detection and discrimination (ARPDD) capability.
