There was nothing outdated about the airframe design. A modern design with more use of composites was considered. The project was very much economically feasible as more than 150 planes were considered.
The only issue was with engine (lack of power for high altitudes and lack of FADEC, mandated by IAF). The Russians did not want to go with a foreign engine for export issues.
India has never designed a transport or civilian aircraft (Saras is struggling). So this was a loss. On the brighter side, more imports for the brown sahibs.

In case IAF is finding issues with it, can it be worked on further for civilian aircraft? We have many tier 2 and tier 3 cities. In case our airlines can get cheaper indigenous made planes, we can have cheaper fairs.
