The young legend of India and Academy Awards winner AR Rahman turns 44 today. One of the most popular and critically acclaimed music directors of the present time, Rahman's career has a span for more than 15 years in Tamil as well as global cinema. The sound perfectionist gave hundreds of unforgettable songs with new flavour and chaired in millions of hearts.

Rahman, known as the Mozart of Madras, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music, and two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman was born in 1966 as AS Dileep Kumar, a Hindu, to RK Shekhar, a composer, arranger and conductor for Malayalam-language films. However, he later got converted into a Muslim. Rahman began his independent career with Mani Ratnam's Roja in Tamil in 1992 after assisting the doyen of Tamil film music Maestro Ilayaraja for nearly a decade. After Roja, Rahman rewrote the history of Indian film music!

Last year, there came no single album from Rahman in Tamil. But this year Rahman is going to rock with at least three Tamil albums in a row. The first of the albums would be Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, followed a few weeks later by Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and towards the end of the year Shankar’s Endhiran. Then there will also be SJ Surya’s Puli in Telugu and Hindi version of Shivaji music.
