I think "transfer technology" is the phrase of the day.

The high cost could be attributed to tech that would have otherwise taken a realy long time to develop here in India.
We also got ToT for su30 and t-90 tanks. What we achieved with these tot ? russians r doing some dirty work here with the help of some local collabarators.

Look like Modi only talks about Make in India but keeps on importing all the weapons. Currently their is no such need to import frigates, we could have given our local shipyards order for the same. In worse case the money could be used to improve infrastructure of local shipyard.
Modi has been importing a lot of weapons to no avail.

4 billions USD for 4 frigates . Are russians arm twisting us to buy these frigates? these frigates built for Russian navy. now rotting in russian shipyards due to funds shortage.

They've not been built as yet! Two frigates will be built in Russia and sent to India, whereas another two will be built at the Goa Shipyard with assistance on technology transfer.

This simultaneous ship construction is to save time. We need to increase our fleet as the difference in force levels with China is increasing by the day.

To the left of the wall stands the frigate "Admiral Butakov", launched in the water, the frigates "Admiral Istomin" (prepared for launching) and "Admiral Kornilov " standing in open pitches are visible. My question is what is so great about this frigate compared to P-17 and P-17A class frigate that we are importing them at such exorbitant cost.
The fact remains we don't need them.

Geopolitics! We need to wean the Russians away from the potential Pak-China-Russia nexus. We need to buy over the Russians and its with money! How else? So a few billion dollars is the price we have to pay. Strange world, what?

Russians are nothing more than cunning businessmen. They know how to milk us dry. If we are using arm deals as diplomacy they i am sorry to say our foreign policy suck.
Russians are kind of people who won't bother double dealing. They will deal with India on one hand and China on other.

Freakin expensive at $4 bn :eek1:. You sure you do not want FREMM frigates from France instead for this money ? Bigger and stealthier.

The kickbacks are russian help in Indian SSN , Akulas and newer bigger SSBN's. IN wants to leapfrog chinese in nuke subs (Not too difficult a task given their noisy subs) and FREMM will not bring about that benefit. Plus additionally GSL will become third shipyard to make Destroyers and frigates. Hopefully L&T will become fourth.

People are going bonkers here with wild accusations and even wilder theories. Nothing new has happened.

Two unfinished frigates from Russia will be completed and sent to India sans propulsion; we will acquire Ukrainian engines (that are already there in the Talwar class FFGs) and retrofit into these ships.

Two additional ships will be built at the Goa shipyard.

Everyone who is screaming that why not order more Shivalik/Kolkata/17A frigates, the answer is simple: we DO NOT have the space. Mazgaon and GRSE have their hands full with the P28 and P15B classes and in the future with the 17A project.

Goa doesn't have any experience building anything bigger than OPVs and LCUs. This will be a good learning curve for them.

And yes $1 Billion seems too much, but the deal includes upgrade packages for the six frigates already in service. Honestly, the Russians are fleecing us, but we are better off with four more of these babies. There are rumours of a new AESA radar package as well for the whole class (maybe the MFSTAR, maybe something else, don't know anything yet)

No, we don't want FREMM frigates @Tactical Frog, our 17A FFGs are far better.

@nimo_cn, take your propaganda elsewhere. At the very least, our DDGs and FFGs don't break down in the middle of the ocean. The IN has the confidence to send a single FFG all the way to Pearl Harbor, you guys are so worried about mech failure, you send a flotilla for anti-piracy ops.

Ukraine engines r not confirmed. Russians r trying fit their own engines. Most probably they will try to fit half baked Russian engines. Again It will be another russian mall with maintenance problem In indian inventory

Ok, Accident on INS chakra and soon this happened.....

Yes, there is no doubt that we're getting costly frigates. Unfortunately, this will continue till we get into UNSC and we build our own Defense Industry.

Ukrainian engines of the Indian ships ARE confirmed. This was a precondition before the deal was signed. Besides, the Russian engines will take years before they are ready.
